Replacing drums without a click track, has been that same challenge for me at times, especially in rubato and/or previously conducted segments. We "professional" musicians/singers CAN absorb subtle, non linear movements after multiple repetition. The human brain's capacity to learn and remember milliseconds of variation amazes me. It does require repetition however. Walking in and doing it with as few passes as possible is enough to make anyone slug the music stand. Although not working on the level of backing up Linda on Pirates, I feel your pain of days gone by. DAWs have proven to often be our friend. Who knew? Still, God bless live musicians. Your playback of these excerpts brought me to tears. Not only because of the vocals but the precision you achieved.

Wow... As a bassist and former Music Director of a regional theater I can't imagine approaching recording Pirates like this...it is a transcendental level of difficulty. You audience here is more astute than most but many people don't understand the function of the conductor in musical theater. It is different from that of a normal orchestra conductor in that we often have to take OUR cue from the stage...even at a this level. Those hard to locate down beats often shift due to something that happens on stage. A fermata may occur because of a misplaced prop or simply because the vocalist ran out of gas...the conductor and the lead end up in a near symbiotic relationship where the conductor has to place the beat to support the artist in the best way possible. Trying to record from the recording put Lee at the fourth level of communication from stage to his cans. I studied that soundtrack when our team produced Pirates...I would never have known what you went through. Simply...wow.

As a bass player, I've had to overdub onto existing tracks recorded by my band without a click track. I hate click tracks, but they sure are handy for overdubs. Of course, the tempo wondered all over the place, but at least these were just straight ahead rock songs. I can't imagine doing that to all the stops and starts in Modern Major General. If Lee hadn't just played it back, I would have said impossible.

As someone who played over 4000 live gigs on bass plus a little studio work including old analog, all I can say is this HAS to be the craziest studio session I ever heard of! Bad enough if there's not much steady time, but this is Gilbert & Sullivan with all that it entails. I didn't know Lee had this on KZbin, will check out some of his other stuff, very cool. I only found out about Ronstadt doing this maybe 3 years ago, heard some bits that floored me, was a real pleasure hearing her doing complete pieces. There was this project she wanted to do, plus the Mexican music project and I can't remember what else. Industry: "Linda, you can't do that." Linda: "Hold my beer."

When it comes to vocal versatility, no one is anywhere near Linda’s league. I don’t know of another example of her kind of versatility in the history of recorded music. Lots of singers dabble in another genre or two, but with Linda it’s more than a genre or two and she does way more than dabble - she sounds like a native in all of them. It doesn’t matter if it’s country, new wave, Mexican folk, operetta, she just tries it and ends up as one of the best in whatever genre it is.

recording on tape v. digital is a different game. I've recorded a bunch of stuff on tape and it's always a more "professional" atmosphere for lack of better terms. You are expected to know you part and be able to lay it down in a take. Digital allows forever manipulation and takes. It's more forgiving and you can cut/paste/move anything forever. That sample that Lee plays in this is brutal. I can't imagine trying to dub that without a conductor. The downbeat walks all over the place because of the actual performance piece of it.
