It was about 20 years ago that I first got hold of a book by David Crystal. Its title is, as I remember, Who cares about Language Usage. I didn't know then that he was an influential person as far as the subject of English is concerned. I studied that book a couple of times and benefitted from it. Later, very recently a friend of mine, who worked in England for some time, brought two other books by him. One is entitled Words,Words,Words, which I have finished reading. The other book is How Language Works, which is a fairly big book, and I am still reading it. All three books have been interesting. These two episodes where Prof Crystal was saying a lot about the language were very good for anyone who's having a desire to learn and acquire the English language. Appreciate Luke's efforts to have a fruitful conversation with him.

@@ОльгаБутина-р1о They’re still not available? That’s annoying. I’ll check the settings again but for some reason KZbin just doesn’t make them available on some videos and I don’t know why 🤷‍♂️

Good afternoon Luke. Thank you for choosing my question. Professor David Crystal is such an amazing person I really enjoyed listening to him and I wish it was longer. I liked his answers and I totally have to listen to this one and the previous one many times in order to absorb his valuable information. By the way I want to tell you something about me (it's very complicated sorry) my family is originally from Bethlehem my grandparents moved to Old Damascus, Syria to work and my father was born there so he has a Syrian passport but then he moved back to Bethlehem and married my mum and she's from Jerusalem and they decided to move to Kuwait to work and here I am in Kuwait currently.😀

Re "sorry". As an American I would say "Excuse me" to get people to let me pass in a crowd, and "Sorry" if I had bumped into them. But when I went to England I found people saying "Sorry" when they hadn't bumped into me, so I didn't understand why they felt they had to apologize. I guess they just have a lower threshold for assuming they disturbed you. And they don't say "Excuse me"; I think they reserve that phrase for after farting. A funny thing happened after I came home, I think I say "Sorry" more now, even in cases where I haven't bumped into someone but simply passed close. It has spread to occasions where I used to say "Excuse me" or nothing.
