I was surprised to see the furling lines for the main don't come back to the cockpit. I thought pretty much all modern yachts had that set up these days. This reminded of scrambling about on pitching coachroofs and clinging on for dear life on the bow while changing hanked-on jibs. This was all in freezing seas off the UK. Can't say I miss those chilly dunkings. Back to Croatia for a charter out of Dubrovnik next week. Will be hoping for 14 knots rather than 40. Love your videos. Proper sailors.

Yes with the yacht in charter, this winch at mast system with a continuous line often gets damaged so to incorrect use. So it’s better for the owner to leave it like this. Looks after the sail better too due to inexperienced users. Likely we will install this line on the yacht for this coming winter. Hope you have a great week! Weather is looking much more like 14knots. 😉 Thanks for the comments!

Thanks Michael. Is this Mike Hancock from NZ?? Yes 40knots has you holding on, especially when the sea gets up! We slept well that night that was for sure.

Great experience and achievement as a new sailer! I also liked how you kept reminding him to ‘slow down, take it slow, slow slow’.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes it is so important to move slowly and purposefully. Fear and haste can cause accidents.

Sorry, it is in german!

Really cool to see excitement and fear (or call it respect for force of nature) during your trip, especially when the reefing of the sail went well. Very recognisable set of emotions that we faced as well during our 40 knots storm last year in Greece. But experiences like this also boost confidence and are making you sharper on your responsibilities as a skipper. Thanks for sharing!

Hi, awesome video. I was wondering if you have recorded the docking part.

Thanks. No we arrived in the dark. Docking was not overly eventful. Came alongside at ACI Marina Palmižana. Then went to sleep!

Some great safe sailing guys! Usually you'll see these youtubers out in boardshorts without lifejackets in conditions like these
@45DegreesSailing2 жыл бұрын
Haha. Thanks mate. Yeh I have been copping some flack on the docking in 40 knots video for not wearing life jackets 😂 This day. This day needed life jackets! Safety first.

Great video. I’ve never sailed on a boat with a canopy - how much wind would you need before you stowed it? And things like mooring lines that aren’t needed during the passage - wouldn’t you be best stowing them to avoid them coming loose and causing problems?
@45DegreesSailing8 ай бұрын
Thanks Chris. It all depends on your situation. If I can see a forecast of 50+ coming, I would stow the bimini for sure. The sprayhood as well depending on the angle it would hit the yacht. If I am out sailing and get 40-50 I would not choose to try and stow it during that wind unless I was in sheltered waters and under control. We were going from dock to dock on this passage, so we coil and stow the stern lines on the rail as shown, have never had it cause an issue as long as it is done tidy and secure. If I am going to be out for a few days without need for them then yes we stow them in the locker.

Hvala Boatwives! It’s Leigh and Sarah right? Yes Nutka keeps on truckin. Was quite impressed with her resilience over the past two years. I think with a nice short cut, high clewed jib she would go through anything. Will work on more vids!

Question: why did you send the colleague to the mast to reef the main sail instead of doing it with the (blue) endless-line from the cockpit which is possible even in strong wind conditions? Thanks, Christian
@45DegreesSailing Жыл бұрын
This yacht is not equipped with that endless line. Only way to reed is at the mast. (You can equip it, but it’s not done on this one)
@nixxonnor2 жыл бұрын
You get bothered when tacking in 20 m/s wind. Better to reef in time like these guys did. The furling sails made the WMG worse, but it is nice all round.
@45DegreesSailing2 жыл бұрын
Hvala. "Easier to shake a reef out when you are bored, than to put one in when you are scared!"
