This compilation is dedicated to my father, who was color blind, but did not live long enough to enjoy color-adjustment optical technology. Red-green color blindness is the most common form, but only about 0.5% of females (compared to 8% of males) of Northern European descent have it. Ironically, if you are a color-blind female, there's a chance your mother is a tetrachromat, which is someone with a genetic variation that gives them four types of cone cells on their retina instead of the usual three, enabling them to distinguish 100 million colors instead of just the one million seen by typical people. A bowdlerized version of this video is at • 46 Color Blind Ladies ...

A friend of mine who was in his late 60's when he got his Enchroma glasses described what it was like seeing colour for the first time. He said "It was like all my life, I was eating oatmeal for every meal. 10 or 12 different types and varieties of oatmeal. . . . . I thought my life had some interesting flavours and combinations of oatmeal and I was used to it all. . . But it was all oatmeal and nothing else . . . And then one day I discovered, chilli, and steak, and ice-cream, and chocolate, and red wine, and cinnamon, and onions, and bananas. . The palate selection grew by about 1,000"

This makes me appreciate the little things in life so much more. Like can you imagine your entire life your perception of the world being turned down seriously. My favorite thing is how these people always react to red and purple. Can't imagine the overload of information that happens to the brain. No wonder all of the people get so emotional. Whoever came up with the idea of these glasses and managed to make it work, deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.

There was a lady that was given a pair. She wanted to go a shopping center. Seemed odd. She proceeded to walk around for over two hours looking at the cars then people watching. Later she went inside to a cosmetics counter for over an hour and spend $300. The ladies working cosmetics were all crying when they heard her story and spent a lot of time with her.

I'm red/green colour blind. You can't judge colours properly... Someone says grass is green and you identify the shade/colour you see as green, but that shade in darkness or in different light will probably be identified as a different colour. Yellows are ok, unless they have a bit of green in them, blue is ok until it turns purple, shades of brown are brutal, reds can be awful. Tints are mind boggling.

EXACTLY RIGHT!!! Speaking from experience, as I am colorblind, the "colors" was there when I put the glasses on. As for knowing what each individual color was - some things was a guesstimation = grass is green / Sky is blue / brake lights are red type of scenario. Some things I had memorized what color it was. For example my vehicles, the color of our house, the animals we had etc. I knew what primary colors was & had memorized what color + color would = new color, but that didn't mean I could see any of them. I truly don't understand how these folks put on the glasses & poof out pops a color professor 🧐 I was a 49 year old kindergartner studying to take a color test fir sure. I was kinda embarrassed when my son brought me a box of 64 crayons -hands down, truly the best study guide ever & I felt super blessed he thought of them.

It varies from person to person depending on the type and severity of the colour blindness. For some it doesn't work at all. And I've heard with older people it becomes even more difficult because their eyes are less capable of adjusting because eyes tend to weaken over time, which happens even with your ability to focus on non-colour blind people

How do these glasses work?
@faduci
@faduci Жыл бұрын
We see red, green and blue, but the receptors in our eyes react to a spectrum of light frequencies, like three hills with the frequencies for red, green and blue at the center/top. Colors like yellow trigger more than one receptor, and the brain determines the color from how much the different receptors react. For most colorblind people, two of these receptor hills are too close together, so many colors trigger both, making them mush together to something brownish. These glasses filter out a frequency band between the receptors, so they actually remove colors, but that way the neighboring receptors now react to separate frequencies, allowing the brain to distinguish between three different signals instead of just two without the filtering glasses separating those overlapping too much.

@@faduci I have normal color vision, in fact I'm a strong candidate for tetrachromacy, but I remember in the 1990's when the AmberVision "blue block" driving sunglasses came out, they had an effect that was mildly similar to what these people are experiencing. Not only did they dramatically reduce sun glare but they made colors really 'pop'. So is that anything similar to what these colorblindness corrective glasses do?
@faduci
@faduci Жыл бұрын
@@audreymuzingo933 No, the popping colors when removing blue light should be mostly a side effect of the eyes/brain adjusting. When you filter out blue, the signals from green and red receptors start to dominate, giving the world a yellow tint, as in additive/light colors red plus green creates yellow. The brain doesn't realize that the world has become darker due to the lack of blue light, so it sort of re-adjusts/re-interprets the total brightness, meaning non-blue colors now appear brighter. It's basically an optical illusion/misinterpretation. The effect can be simulated by adjusting the color curves in a program like Photoshop, and it works the other way too: increasing only the blue level in an image makes esp. the red and yellow parts appear much paler, as they are now perceived as more grayish due to the extra blue component, even though their red and green values haven't changed. Colorblind people don't actually see the colors popping compared to normal sighted people with EnChroma glasses, only compared to the brownish colors they saw without them. Normal vision still encompasses more colors. I have no idea how the effect might be for tetrachromats, who AFAIK have a second, slightly shifted green receptor. Usually any color filter should only reduce the number of colors. The glasses only work for people with not too severe cases of the (most common) red-green blindness, by helping the brain to separate the two colors, so they don't enhance the vision, they just (partially) compensate for a defect. Interestingly for some the effect remains for a while after removing the glasses, the brain has basically become more sensitive to the different red/green frequencies that previously were hard to distinguish. And the glasses come with a warning that for some it may take days to see the effects, as the brain's visual processing first has to learn to deal with the extra information. There are numerous other forms of color blindness, so at least in theory sunglasses filtering out a blue/cyan band could provide a similar benefit for someone with blue-yellow color blindness, though I'm pretty much guessing here. They'd have to be very lucky for the glasses to work by filtering only a small frequency band located in the exact right spot in the middle between two receptors. For tetrachromacy that should be almost impossible, but if someone actually had an extra green receptor too close to the regular one to distinguish the two, they'd basically just have normal vision. The extra receptor and their particular form of color blindness would cancel each other out.

@@faduci That makes total sense, thank you so much! Curious, are you an optometrist or opthomologist? And while I have your ear (er, eye), I'd be very curious to know ....don't laugh .... what is your take on "the dress"? -I don't mean what caused the phenomenon; I've read the explanation and seen the visual demonstrations of it, and am satisfied with that aspect. But I'm still kind of obsessed with it for a couple of reasons: 1. I can see it _both_ ways. The very first time I saw it, it was white/gold .... then later that same day I ran across it again (because it was everywhere on the internet, ha) .... and this time was blue/black. I thought for sure that was just because the first time was on my work screen and the second was on my home laptop, or maybe one or the other was not the original photo but an edited one. So I didn't think much of it, but decided to bookmark that second url to serve as a control for checking again later. Next morning I go to the link ... and the dress is white/gold. I calmed my excitement by reasoning that the ambient light of the room was different (nighttime artificial light vs. morning natural sunlight). But later that second day ..... oh man I still get goosebumps remembering this .... I went to the link .....the dress was white/gold like the last time I saw it, but I continued to look at it, and over the next 2 or 3 seconds, I watched it _switch_ right before my eyes, and literally yelled "NOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Since then, I've encountered only a couple other people who could see it both ways at different viewings, but nobody else who has seen it switch in one viewing. But I'm sure I can't be the only one in the world ....right?? 2. Despite the perfectly rational explanation of how the dress "works", a big part of what strikes me is how I can't think of a single other instance when a phenomenon like it has ever happened before or since. And I mean that in terms of image source, situational experience, degree of perceptional difference, and phenomenal scope, combined, so I'll elaborate on all 4, if you're not bored yet. (Source): There are endless examples of optical illusions, but the most profound ones are intentional manipulations (brain twister images that people have been designing probably since the dawn of artistic expression). Illusions can also be seen unintentionally, "in the wild" but it's usually misperceptions of _shapes_ (pareidolia, classic example) or maybe distance/depth, and the evidence is a car accident or something. But who knows how often people misperceive _color_ without realizing it? Which leads to .... (Situational) How do we know when we see colors "wrong"? -Because someone else sees them _differently_. Don't worry, I'm not taking this to a philosophical screed about "truth" (I take Vyvanse for my ADHD so yes I can ramble, but I don't mess with weed, so I stay pretty grounded .... or ...do I? LOL!). But when people disagree about color, it's usually spontaneous, incidental, unexpected. Someone describes something as ____ and the other person says no, it's _____. In other words, it wasn't presented to them as a "test". In the case of 'the dress,' what started out as a spontaneous disagreement between two people turned into a test for others, "What colors do you think this dress is?" (Degree) Usually color disagreements are over minutiae, like whether something is teal or true green, purple or dark pink, very "close" colors like that, NOT colors as insanely disparate as white versus dark blue, or gold versus black. That is just NUTS. (Scope) As mentioned, the dress colors went from a disagreement between two people to a test for others .... with others being the whole frikkin WORLD in a matter of a couple days. Of course anything can spread like that with the internet and especially social media ... but that already existed for several years before 'the dress' and it has been several years since then. So WHY is it the only phenomenon of its' kind to make such a huge splash? I would assert because it was naturally sourced (not a designed optical illusion), observed spontaneously by two people serving as each other's witnesses, and an extremely profound difference in perception. But I'm still not 100% satisfied with those reasons. Surely the dress can't be THAT unique. Sadly I suspect the reason there hasn't been any 'The Dress 2" viral posts is because the original went SO viral that a lot of people got sick of it immediately, and because it was about something as silly as a dress, it was relegated to Late Nite comedy fodder. But not for me. It stands for me as possibly the most fascinating thing the internet has delivered.

Purple tends to be the standout. With red/green color blindness, you usually get some kind of muddy, dull versions of other colors (orange still look like a hue of yellow or red is close to brownish) but purples are entire different colors. Most who saw purple their entire life saw something close to blue.

@@reinhardt_tvbecause someone has told them what a colour definitely is. Like their car, or a shirt or something like that, and they know it's blue because other people tell them it's blue as well. But while purple looks the same as blue to them people correct them and say "no that's purple". So when they put the glasses on they still know definitely what blue is because they've had people confirm it with them before. However they have never seen purple before, so by process of elimination they know which one purple is.

If you do this for a loved one, please do not ask them what color they are seeing.... They don't know. Instead, hold up a balloon and say this is the color purple. Or this is the color yellow. Also, don't just let them stand there and cry. Put an arm around them....as the experience is akin to seeing God and rather emotional.

Most colorblind people do know. They've grown up being able up differentiate the colors, even if they're going by the shades they know. It's how people seeing colors for the first time can still point out which balloons are which.

I was curious as to how some of the ladies could distinguish between certain colors and shades, like purple and orange. Red is the color that nearly all of were amazed by. For a long time, anyone who used crayons realized there were different shades of colors. "Olive Green" comes to mind.

You can experience some thing fairly similar to what many color blind people see. Just go outside at dawn or sunset just after the sun goes down The colors are very muted and many times just various shades of gray. To live in a world where that is all the color you see would be very drab. What a dismal world to live in. God bless the people who developed these.
