480 Otis & the Audacious Pirate Bear (aka Choco No-Pants) at Brooks Falls - Explore.org

On the first day of Alaskan brown bear 480 Otis's return to Brooks Falls, his time in the Office was interrupted constantly by a very skilled and audacious pirate bear, causing Otis to drop two of his catches, and to have a third stolen from quite literally under his nose. No one, at the time of viewing, was able to ID this talented, pesky thief. Later, after 480 Otis decided to retire from the Falls, bear 856 arrived and sent the mystery pirate packing. No fighting took place in any of these incidents.
Update: He was later nick-named Choco No-Pants by Brooks Lodge staffers and/or NPS rangers.

It looks like Otis is still protecting "his" spot but I hate that the other younger and larger bear is trying to take it. I saw Otis sleeping there a few times - it is well shaded and the fish just come by at eye level. I guess we'll see if Otis can hang onto it another year.

Thankfull, 480 Otis is a master angler. He caught more than enough to compensate for a couple of lost fish that day. The mystery pirate bear was not as good at catching his own, but was quite adept at getting fed anyway. ;)

He disappeared pretty fast after he made a big mistake trying to take 503's fish. 503 gave him a fright. Within 5 years 503 will be the most dominant bear. Maybe taking over after his dad.

I had no idea their claws were long enough and the paw flexible enough to skewer and hold fish. Otis is smart! Second time Audacious came to steal Otis dropped the fish!!! These are "wild" bears. You need to be bigger, stronger, more aggressive, younger, and smarter. You had to know that eventually Otis would be pushed out of that prime fishing spot. Another point; other bears won't defend other bears. Adult brown bears will steal food from any other adult brown bear. Its like... bear capitalism. NOT bear socialism. In the real world, everything is in competition with everything else for food and breeding. Like what I say, OR NOT. This is the truth. The strong shall survive. Kill, or be killed. The law of the jungle. It keeps the gene pool healthy. This is why coastal brown bears are so big and aggressive. But when they get old, they can't fight off other younger bears that are coming into their prime. Otis himself intimidated other bears out of that "Otis office". Other bears went hungry because of Otis. Now, his reign is coming to an end. Its the cycle of life. Appreciate this for what it is, and what it will allways be.

Otis needs a bear retirement plan where the fees are not too terribly high to manage his salmon surplus. Squirrels have excellent investment strategies as well as do eagles. Give me a call all bears at Bear Capital Management. Thanks.

Yes and no. Evolution keeps those with functional survival strategies alive. More agressivity and strengh is one approach, it's functional in the current earth era for bears but never forget that the mega fauna era was similar. Bigger bullies dominated and then they didn't and went extinct and more nimble species replaced them. So no, bigger and fiercer can loose the evolution battle due to the amount of calorie they need to sustain themselves. A smaller bear specie might fare better eventually. It all depends on the ecosystem.
