Bravo! What a great pick. I'm continually amazed by the seeming ease with which you open difficult (for me, impossible) locks. Great job.

LPL: this is a super duper lock and it has this and this and some of that and its hard to pick. lpl points his pick at the lock and open.

Wow! they arrived a lot sooner than I expected. I thought another week at least. Anyway, a great pick and gut, and very informative as always. Those are the smallest driver pins I've ever seen, and the tape, that was strange. I'll have to have a go at the one in my collection now, although I suspect it will take me more days than it took you seconds! I may have a few more locks ready to wing their way to you soon. How are you with lever locks?

I think you as well! I have 2 Viros much older, a very large one, and a smaller. Very cool seeing how it comes apart. Not sure I will ever attempt this project though. Then again!

Hi Harry, Another great Viro shutter, again the seven pins in the space of five, probably excluding a lot of highs and deep lows ( MACS ) Interesting to see it gutted, and well picked as usual. Regards, Brian.

If you melted the plastic would that allow the pins to fall out. could the platic be melted out to compromise the lock in some way.

The plastic is just for manufacturing, that is why it doesn't bother me. It is there to assist in easy assembly, but if you ever need to get the core apart, it will be messier. If the plastic wasn't there, the pins are just held by the metal body.

A really nice little shutter. Odd construction on the lock core though, using that fiberglass reenforced tape to hold it together, thats the sort of tape one often will seen in electronics construction. Also those are some really short spool drivers. I do like the finish as well reminds me of that Zeta locks soft brushed appearance. Another great vid from LPL.
@JeffLMisc

my guess it's just to keep the springs from popping out during assembly. the body of the lock will retain the pins, as i am betting it's a fairly tight tolerance in there.

For an expensive lock, the security could be better, like threading and not just spools. Tape, I wonder what the bean counters did to do that and do not give ideas to Master Lock!!!

Of all people best at lock design / manufacturing, you would be the one most suited. Now admit, you've had to of thought many a times how you would have designed a similar lock more sure proof than the one you're working on. Thank you.

One centimeter before meeting pin #1 is awesome. The key pins almost appear to have flat bottoms. Makes me wonder if the key pin tips actually touch the key bitting at the base of each cut or if the key pin tips ride the sharp outer tops of each cut.

Does having the same tiny spool in every spot add any weaknesses? Easier to bump? In theory you could decode it by measuring the spring force on each pin, since it would be proportional only to the length of the key pin.

It looks like the two actuator slugs are separated by a spring. Does that mean you can bypass the lock by giving it a good whack with a hammer and bumping the top actuator down into the cylinder? Hell, you might even be able to just shim it.
