here in Ontario there are quite a few restrictions on camping es[ecially on federal lands ... things like you cant sleep under the polyvinyl tarps but you can use sil-nylon ... and such ... the joys of the Ministry of Natural Resources ... that and of course the 21 day 100m move of the camp; if you camp i one area you need about 40 camps just so you dont lose all your camping gear to the ministry boys. and yes all the nice nature space is awesome and comes in handy when youre one of the largest land masses in one country ;)

Buying some woodland is a dream of mine. I'd be interested in the process, cost, legalities, etc of locating and buying a piece of land like that. How did you find the land you wanted? How long did it take to find the perfect spot? How many spots did you visit before you found the good one? How did you research what you are and aren't allowed to do with it re: building, permissible types of shelters, wood, human waste, permits, etc? What about road access? How much was it? How much are taxes? If you tried to live there year-round, would a government weiner with a clipboard eventually try to kick you out for some reason? Inspired minds want to know!

Hi King Doomfist. Joe is right - I'll be addressing all of your questions in upcoming videos and on my website. I don't think either Joe or I have considered that there are still lots of viewers here that don't know I have a channel of my own and that I've been documenting my self reliance activities for a few years. Some of your questions are answered already, but I can tell you that my wife and I searched hard for this property because there were a few critical components that we knew we couldn't compromise on.

Good video! Got all excited when you guys started talking about the Sourtoe Cocktail! That's local knowledge for me... glad to hear it's talked about out East as well! Bit of backstory for you best I know it: Sourtoe Cocktail has its origins with a rum-runner who froze his foot while running from the police. To stop the spread of gangrene he chopped off his toe and dropped it in a bottle of rum. Some years later, that bottle was found and a few guys decided they should drink from the bottle. They made rules to follow and established the Sourtoe Cocktail Club. The fine used to be $500 until a guy swallowed the toe on purpose; now it's $2,500. And as far as I know, they've had more than 10 toes donated for the drink! You can enjoy the drink at the Downtown Hotel in Dawson City, Yukon. Just remember the toe has to touch your lips!
@yukonliving7 жыл бұрын
The Sourtoe Cocktail is most often enjoyed with Yukon Jack, but ultimately it is drinkers choice! And, you'll even get a certificate for your accomplishment!

Vague but true history of Newfoundland Screech --- Jamaica and Newfoundland had a long rich trading history where we would send them salt cod, and in return they would send us Jamaican rum. The small problem with the rum (depends on who you ask), was that the rum arrived with wildly varying alcohol contents -- meaning, sometimes it would be weak -- but often, it would be very very strong. Newfoundlanders would generally not water it down, so lard jesus b'y it could knock you on yer arse. During WWII, there were a lot of visiting US service men in St. John's. The story goes that one particularly bold young man downed a bottle in a single go, and the resulting screams and cries cemented the delicious liquor's name for years to come. There is an informal ceremony now to become an honorary Newfoundlander which is called getting "Screeched-In". My cousin who was a warrant officer in the air force and airman of the year had the honor of Screeching In the Governor General. Of course now booze is all regulated so you will have to go to a private still in Jamaica to get anything similar to the fire water that earned the name! Hope that helps!

JoeRobinetBushcraft if you ever get a chance to go up to Newfoundland make sure you get "Screeched-In". Did it last year and it was a blast. I even kissed the Cod. I can also promise you that Screech whiskey is not good at all and I am sure you could power a diesel truck with it.
@dlsthoms7 жыл бұрын
True Newfoundland Screech is Jamaican rum and has always been rum. It probably didn't taste very good back then, but now I don't think it's too bad (only 40% alcohol by volume, 80 proof)

I always loved being outdoors, but I haven't been outside an urbanized environment in 15 years. Watching Shawn I recalled some fond memories, but it was Joe who put it in my head to go camping, as an alternative to off the grid living. I'll buy my gear in two weeks, and this time I won't let other people decide for me what I can and can not do in a wheelchair. I already booked a campground spot for 3 days to see how it goes. I'll probably never bushcraft, but I'd already call it a win if I parked outside a forest and spent a couple days there without a line of sight to my car.

Joe! I just wanted to take the time to say how much of an inspiration you have been to me and that I can't thank you enough. I've been a hiker/camper almost all my life, from 14 years old to 39 now. Life has got in the way of myself getting back to nature and rekindling my love for the outdoors. I was married last year but my wife is American and while we wait for Residency and finalizing her coming to Canada it gets very tough living with the distance. Its forced me to bring back what makes me happy in life and spur myself on as to fill the void of our distance. Your videos have helped me quite alot. Immensely! I see myself in you, each video you post. Your passion and willingness to succeed is very inspiring. KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT BROTHER! Leave all the trolls and haters behind that comment bullshit. You're a true Canadian with many fans and friends put here! I follow you on Instagram, bigbear424, and look forward to your exploits! If you have courses coming up, please keep me in the loop because I would be very down to coming and being a part of your clinics to sharpen skills and keep my woodland knowledge alive and well. Thanks for everything dude! Keep going! You got this. Brett

I have one of those Cold Steel shovels and it does surprisingly well as an axe. That way, I only need one tool. Nice channel, BTW.

Great trip guys! Thanks for bringing us along. I am interested in the classes, but I don't know that I could get in on them to soon. I do look forward to getting more info to see if it will be possible. Thanks!

Was that a bushcraft, cast iron skillet??? It made me laugh... The first time I went backpacking, I carried a large cast iron skillet. I learned a lot about weight on that trip!

Dude, you knocked me over. Then you got sawdust in my eye and blew in my face. Hmmm. Watching this, an idea occurred to me for a newbie ruse (like the old 'snipe hunt'): send kids out to look for chocolate almond trees. It was just a coupla days ago, that Shawn told us about his new property. It was nice to see a continuation of the story thread here. I've been noticing that when the tripod is set up on frozen ground, the 'thunk' of the axe in the tree or on the log is conducted through the ground, up the tripod, and right to the camera mic. Otherwise, we hear a 'thwack' instead.

I believe you are correct on the thunk vs thwack :)

This channel is GREAT!!! Couple of my friends while serving in Iraq talked about doing something similar to this. Wanted to give people a feel for military survival. Building shelters under concealment, rucking, land navigation, level 1 combat life saver, react to fire. Just give people a feel for outdoor survival and basic military tactics.

Sure you can ask but this is not common down south (Skåne) at least. Maybe it's a regional thing.

What you were eating on the stick is what is used to make the Greek sandwich GYRO. I use to buy them by the case from a restaurant where I lived in Liverpool, NY. How they are made: The process starts with boxes of raw beef and lamb trimmings, and ends with what looks like oversized Popsicles the shade of a Band-Aid. In between, the meat is run through a four-ton grinder, where bread crumbs, water, oregano and other seasonings are added. A clumpy paste emerges and is squeezed into a machine that checks for metal and bone. (“You can never be too careful,” Mr. Tomaras said.) Hydraulic pressure - 60 pounds per square inch - is used to fuse the meat into cylinders, which are stacked on trays and then rolled into a flash freezer, where the temperature is 20 degrees below zero.

My family owns 146 acres of land in central Alberta. Its very affordable and accessible for us Canadians. It becomes a huge part of your life, glad to see others are inspired to do the same.
