The husband paid for all the extra testing and investigations. He kept the house as a shrine to her because it was the last place she was alive and he couldn't let her go. Psychologically these are not the acts of someone who is the killer. He really couldn't let her go. He even left the drops of her blood uncleaned. Maybe he hoped that if any future investigations needed to be done, if he kept everything the same, they could see the crime scene preserved.

right there! That was in my comment if you can find it and I pointed out some other things. There is no screen door, once she opens the door to a stranger he was in. People open doors to strangers in those type of neighborhoods because they are trusting that it does not happen here. It was the husband and a hired hand, and he left the payment upstairs for the person to get because they could never meet nor show a transaction (only explanation why the person went up there). I explain more in depth in my comment why I felt it was him. He was smiley and grinning before he was seated on police camera and the paste letter was so 1970s or later. She was not having sex (hubby could not perform), an unused vagina is easily spotted by medical, she was an older woman, and she looked like an older woman. This video kept changing up photos from paste photos of her during younger times and anything recent could been glam shoot for her husband.

The estate stopped paying for the investigation to continue as soon as he died. Whoever is running the estate/his beneficiary would know how desperately he wanted to bring her killer to justice, but his wishes were not carried out after his death. Who is in charge of the estate? Who is his beneficiary? This seems like an incredibly obvious course of investigation, and I don’t know why it was left out of this video. A typical first question people always ask (and rightfully so) is who stood to benefit from the victim’s demise?

His children were likely grown & had little or no connection to Kay. They may even resent her for bringing some portion of this drama into Hal’s life, & him dying just 2 years later. I think the key lies in what the killer did after he killed her. The steps he took around the house. Up the stairs and into her closet and who knows where else. one thing that’s not suspicious to me is the husband wanting to keep the house exactly how it was (including the blood) AND stay there. grief is weird & sometimes we hold onto any tiny little piece that was from them when they were alive, even her blood. that actually made me really sad for him to hear he hates going home, but won’t leave that house 😭 he prob felt like it was betrayal to leave “her” (in spirit) there alone.

He was elderly & 2 years away from dying of a heart attack. So he probably doesn’t feel great physically, & then you add a massive pile of grief on top of that. It reminded me of a recent epsiode of Dateline, the one with the bicyclist who was murdered in her friend's home. The friend found her and gave CPR. She said that when she cleaned the blood off her hands she felt absolutely awful, because the blood was all she had left of her friend. A few of those investigators on this 48 Hours ep seems to lack an understanding of human nature..

Couple things I felt needed expounded on in this episode was why the estate halted the investigation and withdrew the reward money. Who was in charge of the estate? Lawyers? Family members? What was the reasoning? Second was the autopsy report. They stated how she died, that it was a sharp force instrument and how they think her throat was slashed, but is that from the report? The coroner would be able to tell which side it started from and where it ended. As far as those that are suspect in my mind: Firstly, the "best" friend. She had the most to gain and I feel she wanted Hal and wanted Kay's life. The letter may have been a red herring, but if I had to pick an author, it would be her. A man wouldn't mention the house. The friend had money issues of which Hal was constantly bailing her out of. I could see her getting angry with Kay for shirking what Hal provided her and being grateful, instead complaining about it. She resonated with me the most as far as sus. The second would be the identity of the man in the photo, who age progressed, could be the man in the sketch. Not that he's sus, it seems a strange coincidence that needs sorted out. Just my thoughts though. I hope they solve it for her sister's sake. I can't imagine living with a situation like this... not knowing.
@craigime

1. that doesn't need to be expounded on... unless he specifically put in his will that he wanted to continue funding the investigation, the estate has no obligation to continue. 2. the coroner isn't necessarily gonna be able to tell which side the cut started from

I don't like to blame a d*ad husband and I of course might be wrong, but, the things that were said in that letter were almost like things she may have actually said to him in an argument for example, like, she hated the house, her 'old fat' husband or something along those lines. 'She told me'....I don't know, that letter pointed to him imo. He dissed himself by saying what she had said to him..and also she had been cheating. 'She only wanted him for the money'. It seems so obvious to me that the husband Hal kill3d her. That letter sealed it for me, reminds me of a movie where the suspect sent a letter bashing himself & the victim to divert attention. Hal planned the perfect murd3r; putting up reward money, hiring detectives, holding on to the house/ her things…all a ploy to look like a distraught & devastated husband. We’ve seen it before. He may have experienced guilt afterwards which could explain some of his actions but I personally think it was all an act. He could’ve been obsessed with her, tired of her cheating, fetishes, or it could’ve been as simple as a fight leading him to hiring someone.

Feels like there’s no hope with this one, have seen this episode multiple times over the years. It was definitely personal & violent…comes across like it could be a paid hit, but it’s too violent & personal for the killer to not have a grudge with her specifically. Maybe she was having an affair that turned sour & the other man did it. If there were doorbell cameras back then & they got his car on video, they probably would've solved it. EDIT: after finishing watching it again, I only have 2 theories: 1 - recent affair gone sour, or ex boyfriend from distant past carried out a long held grudge 2 - Karen hired a hit, hitman didn't have access to a gun so he used a knife, Karen didn't benefit financially afterward like she thought she would. #1 explains the violent nature of the crime only #2... - also explains the violent nature - explains the profiler saying that a female sent the magazine letter - explains the letter trying to redirect cops focus to an affair as the motive - explains Karen constantly checking with the police for case progress - explains Karen calling Hal away from the house the morning of the crime - explains Kay's autopsy showing no recent intimate activity (no affair).

She decided to stay home that day. Why? Was she expecting someone she knew to come to the house? In regard to her "secret life" (based on what they found in her wardrobe)...when and for whom was she role playing using that wardrobe? Was she part of a "swingers club" (without Hal?), Where did she play out her fantasies wearing those items? Private homes? Private Clubs? With someone in her own home? A one hour portrayal of a case like this is of course never going to be enough time to explore all the questions still unanswered in addition to the ones continuing to be asked. My heart goes out to her sister and I pray the day comes when whoever did this is caught and brought to justice.

My intuition is the husband. Paid in cash a professional. Could have told her another business friend or someone was coming over, perhaps why she let them in. He put up the money because he had money and if he hadnt, immediate suspicion would be on him. Maybe the wife was greedy or unappreciative?? Maybe he figured she'd leave him because she was unhappy with the house and she had history of cheating. Maybe he wasnt satisfying her. Idk this is speculation of course. The note could've been sent by the hired hitman. Definitely another guy. Less likely to blab to others(sorry) and because the overpowering strength. It's almost always the husband. He was a cool cucumber though as most successful business men are. Not their first rodeo. Obviously has no problem lying about financial stuff. Not that im the judge. Just my opinion. He's my no 1 suspect but I'm not sure he was having an affair but I might be wrong. I think he put the hurt in the letter and also it deflected from him. I think he hired private detectives to make it look like he wanted answers but he felt confident enough they wouldn't find any. I think Karen helped him and possibly 'made' the letter.

@@mightymouse1005 I'm not convinced he was having an affair, but I think she had affairs and of course this is just a theory, but if others knew she hated her house and this appeared in the letter - well that was a bit of an alarm bell to me. I wondered if she threw it at him in arguments and perhaps called him the names that were in the letter..and that she was only with him for the money sounds like he could be feeling that way...he felt that that's the only reason she was with him. I thought he might have had enough of feeling used and verbally ab*sed. I think anyone would spend money on a PI to make it look like they didn't do it if it meant they stayed out of jail and they had the money to spare! Her husband was trying to pin it on the ex-husband. But Hal is clearly involved - I think he hired someone, and had the hitman ready to do it when she would be home alone. Very few people knew she would be home alone that afternoon. The cut-out letter supports Hal's theory that it was the ex hubby - yet I think Hal glued those letters and mailed it from Augusta. WHY? He disparaged himself (fat and old), he knew she didn't like their house (how many would know that??) he knew she was married before to the "jilted" ex hubby who wrote about it. Hal AGAIN is accusing her ex-husband, but the letter is a RED HERRING written and mailed by Hal. JMO. I also think Hal's conscious bothered him afterward, and he died 2 years later from guilt.

Clue 1: Perpetrator knew her, was comfortable in the home, not afraid of being caught. 2: Was aware that she was home unexpectedly that day, not her usual plan. Possibly they spoke with her and convinced her they had to meet that day and she skipped work so they could meet. 3. Her ex-husband was trying to meet up with her, and was super angry that she wouldn't meet him. Would she have taken the day off to meet him to appease him? Was he so mad that he punched her as soon as he walked in the door? The letter: The language is important to identifying the writer; who thinks of her as a gold digger, and who in her circle uses the term 'white trash'? Who would say that? It could be someone trying to appear as though the husband wrote the letter. Whoever wrote it, they either have a lot of magazines around, or they went on a magazine shopping spree before creating the letter. And, anger at her family, blaming them for the end of the relationship with Kay. That could definitely suggest the ex. Definitely suggest a history, with her and her family. That's someone with a longer relationship with her.

America has a very different attitude to English speaking countries. Why do they divorce so much? My husband died after we were married for 60 years. The longer we were together the better it got. Teenagers was fun. Then we worked hard to give our children the best education. Finally we enjoyed our time together having fun again. Travelling, sharing hobbies, having a wonderful time. I’m in my 80s now and in poor health. I looked after him and he looked after me. Sadly he went first. His last words to me were that I was the only girl ever for him. It’s taken me 3 years to feel at peace. I just can’t understand how people can jump into another marriage sooner. My friends agree. There just isn’t true love in the beginning. If I am wrong I am sorry but do Americans for money or status? We come come from and have a family of doctors. We were not poor. But oh how we loved each other.

How does a hobby lobby manager have the lady's phone number? Unless she gave him her phone number? I don't give out my phone number to random store managers?

The perp could be an experienced burglar: nice well off houses, he visited day before to find how to get in & out, find best house; he expects house to be empty and uses the bell to find out; she opens & he kills her immediately because she saw him. Goes upstairs to wash his hands. Leaves without taking any valuables because now there is prison for life with any stolen goods.

I don't want to disrespect anybody's name but when you get into situations like that it brings trouble, if you're married just live the boring life. And I mean that in a good way, if you still want to play around don't marry. Jealousy is probably the no 1 thing that gets people killed either by the spouse a jilted lover. Times always been dangerous in that regard but is getting worse, the less people you put yourself out there to the less danger a person has. Nothing wrong with a typical married life, drama free.

What nonsense. Watch the hours tick by. Having a drama free life is a big yawn.

@@vivalaleta lol you can still have fun just do it with your spouse and that applies to life in general. Enjoy your kids, grandkids, dogs whatever. Vacay..there's so many things a family can do that's not boring. When your're 60 and married that's not the time to think you're 20 again. How often do these shows show a jealous someone killing somebody..probably 90% of the time.

This is called victim blaming. They even said it that they found no evidence that she was having an affair. And honestly, if there was, it looks like the husband would have been involved (fetishes, swinging, etc.) Karen seems quite suspicious to me, I would think she planned it and her husband carried it out.

It was likely a male ex-lover who was likely obsessed or angry with her. Usually there is some sort of electronic trail, such as text messages or emails which could be traced back to the suspect. I am thinking she could have met her killer at a sex party it was implied she went too (with her husband) who became obsessed and secretly started stalking her, and turned up at her house one day, and murdered her, She likely recognised and opened the door and allowed entry, and this would explain why he has never been traced. It would be really hard to trace somebody if you met (and had sex) with them once or twice, never communicated with them via phone or email (as you met them at an event), and never mentioned them to anybody as they were just one of many men you have 'swung' with so to speak.

It's amazing how many times people divorce/remarry/cheat, even though it exponentially increases your chances of being a victim of a violent crime. Yet they still do it. RIP though.

She needed to be desired and admired which resulted in affairs while married to all her husbands. I don’t believe her husband did this. I believe that in the end she found her fatal attraction....a secret lover only known to her. Unfortunately he may never be held accountable. Rip Kay.

Sadly, it's the strongest option, IMO. I think she was calling it off with someone, someone who knew she was home (maybe she cancelled on him) and he came over angry. They probably exchanged some verbal words before he attacked.

My scenario: 1. Gansters wanted to buy the mini-shopping mall. They first encountered the wife for discussion. Hal turned down their offer. Other events unknown to us took place...Then the hit was made. 2. The mini-mall was a money laundering business for Hal, gangsters, and Karen. The wife might have become too talkative. Karin could of informed the gangsters, and the hit was made. Karin was actually working for the gangsters as an informant. In other words, a lookout for potential problems.

About the letter, you should think about the person who needs to send such a letter. The letter is not sent to help the police but to divert its attention.
