After a mother of two vanishes on Mother’s Day 2020, bizarre clues emerge- a chipmunk alibi, a tranquilizer gun and a spy pen.
(Editor's note: This episode aired on July 1, 2023. The death of 49-year-old Susanne Morphew was officially declared a homicide, according to an autopsy report released on April 29, 2024. This revelation comes two years after prosecutors dropped murder charges against her husband just as he was about to stand trial. Morphew's remains were found during a search on Sept. 22, 2023, and positively identified by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation on Sept. 27, 2023.) "48 Hours" correspondent Peter Van Sant reports. @@zultana2078 I know, this was frustrating to watch, especially when they let him out of jail. He had stupid answers for his strange behavior. Chasing chipmunks around the house, throwing trash in different dumpsters...and saying he had a good relationship with his wife is a lie. Sorry I irritated the person who said guilty or innocent. I corrected it saying guilty or not guilty. I meant to point out people who are not innocent of a crime can be found not guilty. It depends on the evidence and the lawyers. Just clarifying.

Typically, the torture of animals is more to do with control than simple pleasure. It can indicate neurological psychopathy in an individual who has empathy deficiency. These are mainly those who sit on an empathy deficiency spectrum between narcissistic personality disorder, through sociopathy to full psychopaths. This does not make these people automatically dangerous. Many can live happily in society without issue. It does however make them potentially very dangerous in the right (or wrong) circumstances where a lack of empathy and therefore remorse can lead them to make decisions that are seemingly made without conscience.

People are rich for reasons and one of them is persistent stinginess on little things. Stinginess that might have mattered long ago but today really doesn't matter at all any more in terms of money. It reminds me of the saying, the wages of sin is death. I am not saying at all she deserved to pass on, no way. But if we honored our commandments and stayed closer to God , kept this in our families more, it might be a better outcome. get a divorce first, legally separate, put your lives in more order and then go do your thing. messing around on each other in a marriage, it is always an episode of Snapped, always. no good comes from affairs, they just create more issues for situation and the person that is ok with messing with a married person is just getting free sex without the commitment to you, then they send you back to your spouse and the hell going on in your house. If they cared one bit about you, they would help you out of it not add to it by using your body and sending her back to a home where she was obviously being abused by him. sad.

I find it interesting nothing was said in this video about how much Barry Morphew had to lose in a divorce. As I recall, the home in Colorado was purchased with a downpayment from Suzanne's money (an inheritance if I remember correctly) which would likely be excluded from any community property settlement. Their previous home had not been sold so there was only liability there and no cash from it. Because of the length of their marriage, any monies/assets earned by them after their marriage, including his business, would be divided between them. With him having to pay her the amount of her personal money into the new house and everything else divided, he would have a substantial loss and knew it which is why divorce to him would be "off the table." Do I think he murdered her? Yes, I do. Why? Because he realized he was no longer going to be able to control her. Not only could he not afford it financially, his ego would not allow it. All those trophies are ego assets as were the smiling photos of her with him. That his daughters are defending him means nothing - look at Tammy and Chad Daybell's children defending their father, claiming he was "framed" when the bodies of two dead children were found on his property. Denial by children of a controlling parent means absolutely nothing. While I can understand them not wanting to believe Barry Morphew would hurt their mother, unless they were totally clueless, they had to be aware there were issues. Also, their father has no qualms about killing living things and/or making them suffer - that should be a major clue to them. Only time will tell if the facts can be learned by anyone except Barry Morphew.

It was always about the money IMO. Eliminating Suzanne solved his problem of potentially losing half of everything when she divorced him. Suzanne was missing only 10 days to a couple of weeks, before Barry asked Gene (his father-in-law) to sign her inheritance over to him. Barry told Gene, "I *loved* (past tense) your daughter." Gene answered, "What do you mean loved?" Within a short time, he sold Suzanne's car and later their home in Colorado. Also, within a couple of weeks, Barry had Mallory appointed as conservator of Suzanne so Mallory could sign off on the closing papers for the sale of Barry's and Suzanne's home in Indiana. Within 4-6 months or so, he got himself a girlfriend and took her and his daughters on a trip to Mexico where they were all smiles. Can you imagine? Maybe Barry, yes absolutely, but the daughters? Can't you imagine that he is blocking the door to the person that took the photo? It can also be a protective gesture. They could've just finished making love and there's some telltale laundry lying about, so he blocks the doorstep to the surprise visitor. After all she is smiling.

@@maryalico4313 I can’t wrap my head around it either because (thankfully) nobody in my family is like that so it’s not my normal. But it is for a lot of people and they often feel pressured to stay in bad relationships because their families/friends still clutch their pearls over things like divorce and even domestic abuse isn’t a good enough reason to end a marriage, especially when there’s kids involved. One of my best friends was in an abusive relationship. Her husband would beat her and cheat on her, he’d leave for days at a time and he wouldn’t even try to hide the fact that he was having sex with random women. Her own sons finally convinced her to leave even though everyone else was telling her to stay “for the children”. You know it’s bad when your own children are telling you to get a divorce.

What if her husband in collusion with someone who worked from him in his landscaping business was an accomplice and they together did it? Has that male DNA been checked with that of his employees? Or he paid someone to do this? If there is so much DNA of some other assailant; on her helmet, on her bicycle, in her car and also in the house, it's very likely that he hired someone else to do it.

My first thought when I heard about the random DNA. He had someone help him disperse her things or aid in some way. What are the chances the random DNA belongs to a perp?! The husband is still all over this crime. If they used his cars data to find her it kind of seals his fate.

@@pnwlady It belongs to someone who has committed sexual assault on at the least several women and not just in CO. In Chicago as well. But how can it be an "innocent" occurrence? Perhaps that DNA was just a partial indicator of the type of DNA that the man associated with the sexual assaults had?

@@fague3390 Barry could have located the perp and took him to the house on some job offer or something while Suzanne was out of town. Maybe Barry used her vehicle to pick him up.
