49. Car Hopping while Travelling through Lancashire on our Narrowboat Home.

How do we move our car while travelling and working from our Narrowboat? We head East from Lathom towards Parbold and Appley Bridge, we moor up on our new 57' Narrowboat at the old lock next to the deep lock. See some beautiful scenery in the surrounding area including Parbold, Appley Bridge Community Woodlands and the River Douglas.
Our Narrowboat journey continues, but we hit a snag. Did we break a swing bridge? Discover why we stay here for longer than anticipated and see what Paul finds down in the weed hatch.
How does Anthony car hop from Village to Village and how he's finding the transition from living in a Marina and how do I cope being on my own during the day living on a Narrowboat.
Our boat builder drops by to help with some snags and demonstrates how he ties the ropes on his pins when mooring up.
I also try out and recommend a different boat wash, this is a real game changer for us.

But doesn’t that mean that someone with less than honourable intent could untie you more easily than having to pull the pin or climb aboard to untie?

@@HorshamSteve no, it looks like the knot is at the pins when in actual fact it is near the boat so they would have to climb on to untie. Also, undoing the knot would not release the boat as expected. 😃

So cool to see your beautiful boat out cruising the cut. I enjoyed the rope lesson, which brought back memories. My first job was as a deckhand on the Mississippi River, on what are called "towboats" (though really they are pushboats, pushing barges up and down the river). I was once a real ropemeister and riverman😄. I loved the scene where we are just watching the boat and suddenly Dexter sticks his head out to look around. Thanks again for inviting us in.

I have noticed that depending on the amount of light and angle when you shoot Morning 💫Star the color changes quite a bit, sometime it looks like a Teal and sometime more blue, both colors are very appealing but very different. Lovely vlog as always.Paul when we had our narrow boat Ubique, we used baby oil to clean the outside paintwork just wipe it on, no having to wipe off, it brings the grim off and leaves a lovely shine, this was a tip given to us by an old boater who had been a continuous cruiser for years. First time of seeing your vlog. Your cruising in a lovely area and we will be doing it again this year, Liverpool then across the Ribble Link and onwards to Lancaster. Just a small observation though, please don't wind paddles up without the ratchet on, I'm sure you were winding up not down at the lock, one slip and that handle will find a way to cause you pain. Nice to see you out and about. Oh the joys of weed hatch, might I suggest you get some longer glove like those used by vets! They reach almost to the shoulder (no wet arms) they are available on eBay, Amazon etc. Enjoy!!!!

Paul you always manage to capture the beauty of nature so well in your photography. The sunset was stunning! The waterless wash and wax is great, I use it on my car. I wondered in future videos if you could list the music that you use during your videos. I particularly like the music that you play from 5.12. I've looked through Bensound but cannot find it....I love it! Nice that you're finding your commute a little easier Anthony and I'm sure the walk back to the boat after work was bearable, much better than sat in tailed back traffic anyway. Hey James. We have loved being out. Feels so immersive. The place where we were was a disused lock and completely off the tow path. Very peaceful and quiet. Not quite at our location and had over 5 hour cruise today. Exhausted and wind burnt! Hope you have a good week. Take care and stay safe as always x

When we went through Manchester a couple of years ago when doing the Cheshire Ring, we moored up for the night in the Thomas Telford Basinjon the Ashton Canal, just after the Rochdale Canal turn. It was secure and surrounded by a gated community. I'd recommend it if you are going that way.

Thanks Pamela. We love those houses and used to walk that way before we got our boat. People do throw things in the canal. Was quite upsetting yesterday to see 2 ducks surrounded by a load of plastic bottles. It is such a shame as the canal is such a beautiful place. Have a good week x

Love the vlog don’t know if you have gone past bridge 3 on the Leigh branch yet I grew up in Bamfurlong and a couple of years ago when back on holiday we noticed that the bridge had been widened, but in the process the two pillboxes had been demolished. 😞

Another stunning vlog, thank you. The birdsong was glorious. I noticed that one of the three boats that passed you before the Deep Lock had their side hatch open. Is is usual to close bow doors, hatches etc when going through a lock? Of course they may have opened it later.

Hi Sara: personally, I would close all the windows and hatches going through a lock. Some can be very leaky. We loved the disused lock mooring, in fact we were there for over a week due to work that needed doing to the boat and my car. Hope you have a good week. Take care x

We had a bit of confusion with the census too. My youngest son has been with us since Christmas. He’s a Uni student. When we completed the census details for him, noting that he’s often at a different address, it was clear that certain questions weren’t asked, implying he should have been completing those from his ‘normal’ address. Fortunately, we took note of that and he was able to access his census code by emailing their help line. I wonder how accurate this census will be? Will all students have gone to the trouble of doing that? By the way, I have been doing a lot of family history research, so I absolutely love the census records.

They really didn’t make it easy. It seemed strange we had to give a physical address even though we didn’t have one. I am sure not many students would have bothered to fill it in at their usual address either. I bet the family history thing is interesting. How you getting along? X

Got on really well with the family history, back to when the first church records started for my father’s male line. His mother’s line has been a bit more tricky, given her maiden name was Jones and she was born in Wales. My husband’s family line has been even more interesting. I’ve tracked his male line from Anglesey back to Cheshire, but he also has ancestors from Ireland, Alderney (Channel Islands - one of the ‘old families’ apparently), and even Tuscany! Definitely a mongrel!

Hey Becky. We are on the move again later today. We have to try and get through Manchester! MOT stands for Ministry of Transport and is a test a car needs to have every year once it is over 3 years old. If it doesn’t pass you shouldn’t drive your car as your insurance is void. It tells you why your car have failed. You need to put this right and send it for a retest. Luckily mine was all good apart from advisory info re my tyres which I have since had done.
