Regarding the draw weight of medieval war bows: It's true that there is no definitive weight we know. There are the Mary Rose bows which allow accurate reconstructions and measurements, but they date a good bit after the medieval era, and I don't know of any surviving medieval English warbows that allow for accurate reconstructions. The Mary Rose bows range between 120 and over 200 lbs, which is pretty heavy even if you convert it into metric system. However, for some earlier types of bows there are accurate reconstructions. The southern German 6th/7th century "Type Oberflacht" bows are yew selfbows with a curious pentagonal cross-section. Reconstructions measure at about 70 lbs which would make them likely heavy hunting bows. They're right at the edge to the definition of war bows (which is 70 lbs and upward in England) but the source material doesn't really suggest bows being weapons of war at the time, at least not on a massive scale. On the other hand, at the same time the Avars, a steppe nomadic people living in south eastern Europe, used horse bows in war. They got in conflict with both the Byzantine empire as well as the Franks and their bows were prized prestige objects, so the idea of using bows in war wasn't unknown - perhaps the scholars just didn't deem it worth recording. In any way, given that we know in the 6th and 7th century bows had draw weights of about 70 lbs and in early modern times war bows had upwards of 120 lbs, plus we know from depictions of archers that they used special, adapted stances intended for high draw weights, it's a good guess that high and late medieval English (and Welsh) war bows would've ranged between 100 and 180 lbs.

Actually, we used to shoot compound instinctive back in the day. There were three reasons for it: It was fun; all the reasons one shoots any bow instinctive, for instance I once wing shot grouse with a PSE 70 pound compound with wheels and a 50% let-off, not as clunky as cams. And they were cheap. A comparable performing recurve like the Bighorn I lusted after was 295, compound was 105 delivered. I had a friend who shot a Quadraflex compound instinctive at 100 pounds and did very well in 3D. Field points are designed for hunting small game and shooting targets, that is what makes them different from target points. There are two sharp corners that punch a hole and transfer energy. Basically a marriage between a blunt and a target point. They are harder on most targets. I guess you can torque a bow a lot of ways, but the main problem up until about 20 years ago was bows came with poorly designed grips that made it very difficult to shoot without torque. People would hold the bows with only the thumb and index finger yoke in contact with the bow, or they would shoot off an aluminum riser with the grip removed, buy an aftermarket grip, or reprofile the grip. Manufacturers sold bows with these crappy grips because they feel good when you pick up the bow in the shop. They were just useless for shooting. It pays to know about this disease if you love to buy older bows, like a Bear 59. The basic rule for uphill and downhill is that it is the horizontal difference that matters. Distance estimation is key to hitting your target in archery. In some forms it is the most important skill. At forty five degrees the difference is that the distance is 30 percent shorter than it appears. So it is very important, and people shoot from trees so it matters a lot. They used to sell pendulum sights (Truglow still makes one) where relative to the line of sight the pin would move in proportion to the slope. Cool idea but since those sights were popular, compound speeds are 75% faster, and that helps enough that they don't to matter as much. Another problem with hills is people's draw lengths (particularly with real bows tends to shorten). In some respects this should correct for overestimating the distance, but it just seems to be another problem. While it worked with your joke on missiles if you are shooting on hills you will normally correct by underholding for the actual distance. The target is closer relative to it's linear distance. The effect is much the same uphill as downhill.

A firm grip, which leads to a light axial rotation can also improve your shooting. It depends on the release technique. With thumb draw or slavic release the arrow is on the other side (compared with three finger mediteran) so it clears out the arrow path, if done it right.

No, no, no…..archers paradox is not at all controversial. It’s simply the fact that the angle of the arrow at brace is more severely off target than when at full draw on non-shoot-through-riser style bows. Once shot, that arrow seemingly has to go through the brace state again meaning it should veer off to the left for most right-handed shooters (opposite for most lefties). The bending of the arrow is how the archers paradox is overcome. Also, you aim low when shooting uphill and downhill.

Target archery is more common outside of the USA even in 3D target shooting so more of these people use a traditional bow or target/hunting ILF bow as these bows require less work to maintain and often can find parts/95% of the parts on older ILF target bows, maybe the shelf is hard to find if more then just a stick on target shelf, some traditional bowfishing specific bows could be more like 90% of parts depending on era/model.

with all shooting aim down your thumbs and keep them level with your eyes and ear. When you get to full draw or slightly before. push/punch with the bow at the target. Relaxing your thumb your holding the string with. keep your draw hand still and relaxed and take the bow away from it. like a jab in boxing.

Commonly used in sports target archery to reach those distances with such accuracy, they don't grip their bows to prevent torqueing when releasing the arrow and just let the bow do it's thing to shoot the arrow as straight as possible to an small target at long distances.

The crossbow ban was neither very effective neither was it openly enforced ever. The first mention is a papal edict from Urban II in the 1090s, which was widely ignored all over the continent. In 1139 at the second Lateran Council, seeing that the last edict was not worth the paper it was written on, they tried a different route and proclaimed that the use of the crossbow against christian was prohibited, so it could still be used during the crusades, but they hoped it would stop usage in europe. .The prohibition was confirmed by pope Innocent III and later Conrad II holy roman emperor at that time. But at that time it was already too late and the crossbow was in wide use all over europe, and the edict just quickened the adoption in armies that had not used it before. So yes technically it was banned, but there is no known instance of a crossbowman being ever prosecuted for using a crossbow against other christians. As the punishment could have been excommunication, which was taken very seriously during that time, but still the weapon remained in use and even spread shows that the prohibition was never really enforced either by the church or any of the ruling classes.

It was King Henry II who first introduced archery laws in England, they were expanded over time and only repealed under Queen Victoria. English warbows were anything from 80 to 140+ # in draw weight (Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose had a bunch on board when she was recovered from the River Solent in the 90s) I have also read that oriental bows draw weights could be as little as 60 to 70# and still be considered a warbow. 'Torque-ing' a bow is normal with asiatic archery, it moves the bow out of the path of the arrow, reducing archers paradox. (I know it's wrong but I shoot my traditional longbows using thumbdraw and torquing the bow, I also almost never get string slap doing this)

According to them single limbs are on beginner bows or anything that isnt 1000 dollars or more. They also spend 10x more $ on bow strings than they need too. Spectra, dacron, fast flight all mixtures of 1-3 synthetic threads you can buy 5000 feet of what bow stores sell for 500. smh... also the way they put serving on the strings is deplorable. Some of that non compound non traditional/target models is not just crossbow but also a growing number who are using good lever bows becuse they are tired of using Compound having to upgrade all the time when models parts are no longer made by the company and are too dumb to look online for older bows. One model of compound made since mid 2000's as the Genesis Pro an older 15--35 pound bow, now Gen--X by Genesis is a 21--40 pound compound where all parts fit the same on Gen-X models and 95% of parts fit on the older Gennesis Pro. This brand Gennesis seems to fix the problem of the Compound bow needing to be buying a new model when company stops making parts for that is one of the last non bowfishing specific compounds one can use with the fingers.
