I'm old enough so most of my 50cc memories. Come from unrestricted 50cc's, either in scooter and motorbike shape and form. With that said my normal/regular Yamaha scooter was hiting 80km/h under normal daily conditions. All the Portuguese brands of the time did that easily, model dependent. But put some attention to the details. And quite commonly one would be overtaking any car riding at 120km/h. They were smoky (2 stroke), they were noisy. But damned they moved well, specially the ones with 5 and 6 speed gearboxes. 🙂

The thing is that you don't get a "Title", just a kind of "Bill of Sale" saying you bought it from whoever and it's your property and you do own it. If you don't have a Title, you can't get a tag for it (which is why I bought mine, plus you don't need a drivers License either) or register it to even get a tag. I may start keeping my "Title-Bill of Sale" in (or on it like inside the tool kit that came with it) and when they pull me over and they tell me this or that, I'll just pull it out and ask how to get a tag for one when it doesn't even have a title to get it with. If they say I need a license, I'll ask "Well, how can a 14 or 15 year old ride one when they can't even get a license." And yes, I've seen about 4 or 5 kids riding them around in our town, unless they are kids of a cop and they don't even mess with them since they probably work with one of their parents at the local city Police or County Sheriffs office..
@grazz78653 жыл бұрын
49ccscoot said it perfectly. My neighbor bought an electric scooter-the ones you stand on but his had a seat. He got pulled over and the cop said “you can own it, but you can’t ride it on streets”. LOL seriously?! I printed out the NYS DMV law effective 8/2/20 which clearly states you can ride on most streets in NYS with a posted speed limit of 30MPH or less.
@briankoundry34014 жыл бұрын
For me the reason why I bought one is because you don’t need a registration in most states they’re great on gas if I wanted to go 100 I would’ve bought a motorcycle just the way I see it🤷🏻♂️

I am 6' 280. I have owned two 50cc scooters, both Japanese, one 2 stroke (2005 Yamaha Zuma) and one 4 stroke (2007 Honda Metropolitan) The Zuma would actually hit around 42 mph GPS on a flat level road with no wind, and reached that speed a lot faster than the Honda, which topped out at around 37 mph GPS under the same conditions. The Zuma was a LOT more fun to ride. In my state a full motorcycle license, registration, plate, and insurance is required for ANY scooter. So you can go as fast as you want on a 50cc. But there really isn't any way to increase the speed of a 50cc. You might get a 5-7 mph increase out of a big bore kit, less restrictive air cleaner, and exhaust, but not only will all that stuff cost more than buying a 125cc or 150cc scooter, it still won't be as fast, and modifying your engine that way will significantly shorten it's life. A 50cc pedal moped (1970s style) will go 30 mph. I have been able to double that speed with some drastic and expensive modifications. But the engines would invariably blow up within 200 miles. I still have a scar on my right leg from when one of my engines exploded and a big chunk of the crankcase hit my leg, causing a large cut. If you live out in the middle of nowhere, and don't need to go above bicycle speeds, a 50cc should be just fine. If you are in town you will need at least a 150cc to avoid getting killed. If you have to ride on roads with 65 mph speed limits (which everybody goes 75-80 mph on in my area) you need at least a 250cc scooter, which, IMO, is right on the edge of what could be called a scooter.

My Peugeot Ludix (a French build bulletproof courier model) 50cc 2T has been doing 45mph reliably for over 5 years now. In my experience the trick is to just remove the restrictions (vario rings) and not tune your scooters engine because it takes back from reliability. Just keep in mind that with extra speed comes extra maintenance like brakes, bearings, clutch en drivebelt. From a dead stop my 50cc will out-accelerate any 125cc. The key to more speed, maintaining good mileage and reliability is weight and the loss of some rings :D

Here in Florida the 49cc class is not a moped, but not a motorcycle. Mopeds have to have pedals, but motorcycles are defined by the state as 50cc and up. So you have to have a car or mc license to ride a 49cc, and have to have it registered and titled (mopeds don't get titled), but there is no speed or hp limit, no lane use restriction, no helmet or eye protection requirement for adults, and no actual clutch and gears ban. Under 21 riders have to have a special "kiddy car" plate though. But we can't have motorized bicycles, though an electric "helper motor" IS allowed, with a speed and wattage limit, but no need for a regi

30 mph moped like a dream from standpoint of a daily bicycle commuter. i commute to my part time job about 8-9 miles one direction with a bicycle (a basic single speed one i found abandoned and put it back on the road, not some fancy 25-gear shit). but i'll tell you something, it's a dream compared to walking 18miles daily (plus loading trucks in warehouse), AND it's dirt cheap compared to paying about 10€ daily for public service commute. so, dear complainers, it's all matter of perspective.

For a 50cc you don’t need a license in NY but they also required you to have insurance and registration(with plates). For the registration you can use a state ID. However the problem arises when you get insurance because insurance companies asked for any type of licenses.

for a decently big guy (220 lbs and losing) would a 49cc be bad for a decently steep hill?
@KitWriter5 жыл бұрын
Jacob Webb I’m 220 and when you hit a hill, you’ll be doing 20-25mph with no wind. It’s about 2.5 horsepower, but with a little bit of upgrading you might get an extra 5mph out of it. Still faster than a bicycle.
@gooberclese4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the bike. A 2 stroke with high revs might be zippy on flats but bog on hills. I love my Fa50 but a decent hill can reduce it to 20mph fast. I suggest you do a little research into mopeds. Not the same as scooters by law and usually less restrictive. The pedals help a lot on steep hills and the mod community is huge. Still in 49cc I have a Sachs Eagle that will do 45 mph no problem and pulls hills way better than my scooter. Many (myself included) love the old monkey bikes and Honda Expresses and Trail 50s through Trail 125s. The new Chinese scooters are ok at best and most are junk. The old scooters and mopeds are where it's at. Also...if it is slow but gets awesome mileage....leave it alone and just ride it. Heavy mods to make slow scooters fast often cause high wear, cost a ton, have to be rebuilt often, and kill reliability and mileage.

I live in Michigan, you can operate a moped/scooter that is 100cc or less and capable of 30 mph on a flat surface without a license on private property, on public roads you need a moped license which works in place of a driver's license and doesn't require a road test. The kicker is that anything above that is considered a motorcycle, but in Michigan to my knowledge you can't get just a motorcycle license, oh no, you HAVE to get your driver's license first then get a motorcycle endorsement. It flippin sucks because if I could get just a motorcycle license I would look into 150cc scooters.

Scooters are never mopeds in my eyes. Mopeds have pedals. Things like Puch, Tomos, etc... They may be legally classified as mopeds, but I never look at a scooter and see a moped. I hate even putting moped in the title, but so many people call scooters mopeds.

Don't ride the shoulder, you have as much right to the road as anyone and it's safer if you make people overtake properly rather than try and squeeze two to one lane. Own the road and stay safe.
@49ccscoot9 жыл бұрын
oo0Spyder0oo Depends on where you live. Here a 49cc absolutely does not have the same rights to the road as other vehicles... "When operating a motor scooter or moped, the rider must ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practical and safe except when:1. Making a left turn.2. Operating on a one-way street.3. Passing a stopped or slower moving vehicle.4. Avoiding pedestrians or road hazards.5. The right lane is a right turn only lane.6. Operating in a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle or motor scooter and another vehicle to travel safely side by side.... A person may not operate a motor scooter or moped on a roadway where the posted maximum speed limit is more than 50 miles per hour, or on an expressway or other controlled access highway. If the roadway has a bike lane paved to a smooth surface or a paved shoulder, a person operating a motor scooter or moped must use the bike lane or shoulder and may not ride on the roadway except for a situation identified above as (1 through 6)."

***** You're not supposed to record tv programs but we all do it. Regardless of the law, do it for your own safety, it's been proven to be the number one cause of 'accidents' here. Aside from the restrictive speed in itself being a danger.
@49ccscoot9 жыл бұрын
I do ride in the lane of travel at times, but I've rode here for years and it seems safer on the shoulder in some areas. If I can easily keep up with the speed limit and don't feel at great risk of getting pulled over for it then I do. I have no desire to enrage other motorists if I'm on a 30MPH scoot in a 50MPH zone though. Angry people piloting 2,000+lb cars can be quite dangerous as well. I do think for safety the law has to be ignored at times, because I think the people that write these laws have no idea what it's actually like to ride a scooter or moped regularly in many situations. I'll risk a ticket for sure if I feel safer riding somewhere other than where a book says I have to and just hope any officer that happens to see me will understand.

Nice video! :) One reason to get a 50cc in many markets (at least in my country Sweden and some other countries in Europe at least) is that you can ride a 50 on a regular car license. A motorbike license is really expensive in many countries and not accessible for everyone. In addition if you think a car license is a bit too pricy here, a moped license is very cheap (just a few hundred dollars). Most 50cc scooters/mopeds are very cheap to buy and maintain (especially if you know it yourself). In my country there are two categories of 50cc, one called "moped class I" (45km/h) and then moped class II (25/30 km/h) the last often goes faster than 25/30kmh by a bit, and you can ride them in the bike lane, so in town they can make decent sense in quiet a few markets.

#1 reason to by a 49cc scooter - park it like a bicycle in most urban areas. 1 more cubic centimetre and you have to pay to park it like a motorcycle. For urban commuters with a 10 mile commute or less in most normal (non-snow) weather, this is perfect. Gets you in town much faster than, say, the broken and filthy subway system in Boston. As the author states, you have no right to complain about speed with these vehicles. They aren't designed for speed.

I can ride a bicycle fine, but I can't say I do or did regularly before I got a scooter. If you can't control a bicycle, then maybe a scooter isn't for you, but as long as you can keep your balance and steer a two-wheeler, you should be able to learn to ride a scooter. Parking lot practice exercises really help.

90GTVert I thought it would be much like riding a bike but it’s........different. I live in an intentional community in southern New Mexico where our roads are dirt and gravel. I felt nervous because it felt like the tires could slip. The second time was easier and my friend said to use my feet help balance on these roads. We drive Real slow around her. Once I feel comfortable I’m going on the village road. It’s dirt also but not as much gravel. I figure by the time I get my balancing act together on my community roads the village road will be easy peasy.

Excellent vid. Excellent audio - what equipment did you use (audio and video)? Bought a "Genuine Buddy 50" three days ago and I'm loving it. Haven't been on a gas powered two-wheeled vehicle in decades. This is really a "hoot"! It's the fastest (arrived "derestricted" - speed governors removed) of the 50cc's, and even though I'm in the first week of breaking it in, it has no problem at 40 mph, and I still have a way to go before I hit full throttle. Dealer says it'll go 50 mph - we'll see. What I like about it other than speed (to manuerver quickly out of harm's way) is the front disc brake, the hazard flashers, the directionals which don't stick out waiting to be knocked off, and the 1.6 gal gas tank. I don't need it, but it comes with a USB outlet for charging your whatever. Made by a USA based company (Chicago), with the factory in the motor scooter capital of the world - Taiwan. Not to be confused with Chinese junk. I'll be using it ONLY for local traffic, because there's no way it wants to see a turnpike, superhighway or thruway acceleration lane. It's all about being realistic about the traffic you expect to encounter. Looking forward to more of your 50cc vlogs.

usernamemykel I agree with your opinion on the Buddy 50. I have a 2014 Genuine Roughhouse 50. Mods installed are Malossi 70cc sport (not race porting) bbk, an NCY super transmission kit, and still use stock exhaust. I consistently achieve 55-56 mph even on very gradual uphill roads but generally an incline will net me 50-51 mph. On a flat road I can achieve 56mph (GPS) and then back off of the throttle about 30% and still maintain the top speed until I hit an incline or substantial wind. The Buddy 50 is the identical motor as far as I've been informed. I've seen people with very similar mods and results and I've seen others with results that aren't even as good as mine when it was bone stock when using this motor platform. Could be that they are at a higher elevation, improper roller/slider weight, contra spring, and so on. I can only comment on my experiences with my machine. I can't recall what the weight of the Dr. pulley slider weights were used but I'll be doing a spring cleaning on the variator in the next few weeks and I'll check. I've been running this for the past 4 years and have had zero issues at all. I bought it in 2014 with 700 miles on the odometer and from a currently employed scooter mechanic at the Genuine dealership. It appears that he got mine tuned perfectly because other local scooter tuners are a bit surprised at how mine rides. Wish I could take the credit as I'm a mechanic as well but I didn't tune it.

Gets me where i need to be, i just ride it around town, the big bore kit really helped with the performance, put a performance muffler and coil as well. In North Carolina on a50cc don't have to have license if it goes no faster than 35, (don't tell anyone 😆) and can ride on any road don't have to ride the shoulder, you have to have insurance and tags.
