It's crazy how 2004 and 2016 were mirror images of each other with the 49ers going 2-14 while losing against the eventual super bowl champion patriots who happened to go a reverse 14-2 each of those years in route to a super bowl title.

This is a matchup of two franchises in this game that are totally headed in opposite directions. The 49ers were in uncharted waters with finishing (2-14). This would be Dennis Erickson's final game as 49ers head coach as he would be replaced by Mike Nolan as the Niners would continue to struggle throughout the remainder of the decade while the Patriots would win their second straight Super Bowl for the third time in four years to establish them as a dynasty while the Patriots have now appeared in nine Super Bowls while the Niners had have only three winning seasons since 2002 including one Super Bowl appearance since The York family fired Steve Marucci and replaced him with Dennis Erickson while the Patriots since Robert Kraft became the owner of the Patriots, they have been the winningest franchise in Pro Sports since 1994 and are the Gold Standard Of The Model Franchise.

Perhaps things reverse themselves in the next decade after a through rebuild (I’m cautiously optimistic for a playoff berth this season with the undefeated start so far), but for now it’s the 49ers who are hoping to reemerge out of their 21st century dark age and into a new possible era, while the Patriots just keep adding onto what is undoubtedly pro football’s greatest dynasty ever.

One of many areas where Brady improved as his career progressed was his decision-making which is reflected in the rapid decline of ints. he threw after '06. Of course pass catchers such as Moss, Welker, Gronk, Hernandez and Edelman had a bit to with that, but there's no doubt Tom became a smarter QB over the years.

I remember being in shock as my niners who were 2-13 before that game were actually winning, but all of a sudden, just like in every game that season, in the 2 half we would be a total disaster

The 49ers could have had a 14-0 lead and they would have lost this game-the talent and coaching disparity between the two teams was that big! Anyhow, 2004 and 2016 have to be the two worst seasons in 49ers history with terrible head coaches, terrible offenses, and abysmal run defenses, but hopefully better times are ahead (starting with this season)! #NinerFaithful

Erickson was such a f'n hack. Walking off the field at the half with 30 seconds and two timeouts left - what a great way to demoralize your team. Then he says "we need some big plays." SMH

Been a 49er fan since birth. Im 28 now. This 2004 Niners team is one that i totally erased from my memory for good reason. The only starters i recognized during pregame intros was Dorsey and Barlow. Everyone else on the team are no-name backups at best. What a horrible year, horrible team, and horrible coach. P.s. posting this on the day that Belichick parted ways with the Pats.

Patriots the dynasty and the 49ers the former dynasty thats the worst team that year. They had to many young inexperienced players on their offense because of salary cap issues. 25% of their salary cap was dead money. Salary cap is what ruined them and the cowboys franchise.

Not many football fans know that the 49ers currently have one of the best (if not THE best) contract negotiators in the NFL in Paraag Marathe; every single free agent contract the team has drawn up since 2004 has been team-friendly for the most part and filled with incentives and bonuses so that the organization can move on from them easily and not get stuck with a ton of dead money.

Mike Youngblood The 49ers offense that year was a shitty dumpster fire between Dennis Erickson, Tim Rattay, and their non-existent wideouts...”trash” didn’t even begin to describe it. Their current coach is a massive sea change from the 49ers offensive thinking from 2003-2016 (even in 2011-2013 when the team was a bonafide contender and SB runner-up).
