Not paying for a QB also didn't help. So the literal evolution of RB pay just advanced because the next guy up will want to be in that window obviously. Good for CMC! In a time where rb salaries go down despite an ever increasing cap, dude got paid. Honestly, this is how it should be for every position. While signing bonuses and other parlor tricks might count against this year's salary cap so that the team can pull the cap hits for later years into the early years, they don't get calculated into the player's 'Game Checks', his 'Wages'.

As good as MaCaffrey is this deal is a lot to do with his image, the 49ers know he is the icon of the team to those outside the hardcore NFL fans. Since Brady retired he probably is the NFL to the casual or non sports fan. I'm suprised his agents didn't push for more....the 49ers would have had to have paid it, there is no way they could lose him just in terms of their 'brand' visibility.

I am one of the people that is going to push back on it being an extension and I am smarter than you. The salary numbers are kept on the existing years. If the player gets fined by the team or the League, they calculate the fine based on the old salary language for the pre existing years. If AJ Brown, who would have been under contract for the next two years and signed a three year extension to go up to five years, gets fined by the League for an infraction that is calculated on salary, such as game suspensions, then the amount he gets fined will be calculated based on the language from the original contract. It is an extension, NOT a brand new contract.

@@ryanjones875 Again, salary cap chicanery is different than an actual adjustment to his wages. I am not sure because I did not read the actual contract but if that IS the case, you would like read in the language of the extension something like 'Player accepts a deferment of salary for year x' and then the adjusted salary, referencing the old contract. The reason it is clearly not a 'Tear up old contract and sign a new one.' as Bonehead keeps saying, is because, if there was a legal dispute, the old contract would be brought to court along with the extension because the extension is going to reference the old contract a dozen times.

@@ryanjones875 Right, so Howie does that stuff all of the time. The player has to agree that a portion of the salary becomes a signing bonus. Of course, the player will always accept the money up front but the extension contract references the original contract for all of the calculations. If there was legal action of any kind, the original contract would have to be brought to court. The signing bonus cap hit being spread across the contract is a part of the collective bargaining agreement to incentivize teams to give the signing bonuses. I am actually surprised that they are moving the cap hit, instead of taking more this year and reducing the later hits.
