Yes, they did both remain undefeated. And yes, it was quite a collision when they met. niners versus Giants on that Monday night game was quite the battle. Final score was 7 to 3 Niners with Phil Simms and Ronnie Lott going facemask facemask John in the end zone. When Sims last attempt fell short as time ran out. It felt so good to beat those Giants and we got to within a Roger Craig fumble. Of a 3rd straight Super Bowl.

I remember this game. I had to watch it at my uncle's house because I didn't have cable. Even though Dallas lost I went away from this game feeling good about the direction The Cowboys were going. The defense in particular was much improved! It seemed like Jimmy did it over night that season. I also remember thinking Dallas had a playoff shot late in the season do to some very winnable games going down the stretch but Troy Aikman went down a few games before the end of the season. (give or take) Babe Laufenberg was Dallas's number 2 QB at the time after trading away Steve Walsh. For that season trading away Walsh was a big mistake! Babe looked good during his first start, calling out audibles, pointing, directing players. It looked like he had a real grasp of the offense. Then the center handed him the ball for the first time and it was at that point you realized Dallas wasn't winning another game that season. 😨

@MikeyStoneking Most kickers back in these days were really bad. To put in perspective, Scott Norwood missed the 47 yarder in the Super Bowl and it was pretty much thought he had little chance to make it. Imagine that today.

Aside from prohibiting Montana from competing for the starting job once he got healthy, Siefert’s biggest blunders were sticking with Dexter Carter and Mike Cofer for as long as he did.

The Minnesota trade helped those drafts big time and then San Francisco gifting them Charles Haley is why they had their run. Jimmy Johnson wasn’t the difference maker. Jimmy was mediocre with the Miami Dolphins. Dallas had an all-star team.

The 49ers were still just a dominate and deadly as they were the year before. For the Cowboys they just weren't that good enough yet to compete with the top teams. It started to change for the Cowboys in 1991 and then paid off in 1992 when they got Charles Haley as the final piece of the puzzle.

You can make the case that after this game, it was a turning point for Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys. From the start of the previous season ('89) to after this game, Jimmy and the Cowboys were 4-22. The following week at the Rams towards the end of Super Bowl 28, the Cowboys went 47-15. So they must have learned a lot from this game, and they would be nuts if they didn't as they went up against the back-to-back defending SB champs at the time, 49ers.

Poor Buffalo? Poor NFL. That Minnesota trade and San Francisco gifting them Charles Haley is why the Cowboys dominated the NFL for a few years. After 1995 they were already starting to look old. What was cool was watching how mediocre Jimmy Johnson was with the Miami Dolphins.

@@timothyswauger3984 Which was the season finale in a meaningless game as the 49ers waxed the Cowboys, 42-17. It was going to be a meaningless game for the Cowboys regardless of whether they would have won the game a week prior at home against the Redskins or not. Well.... maybe it wouldn't have been meaningless had the Redskins lost their season finale since they played the day before and then the Cowboys may have had something to play for against the 49ers.

ESPN got to air this game, while this rivalry never appeared on ABC's Monday Night Football while that package was called by Frank and Al and Dan, which probably did not sit well with them. Every other 49ers-Cowboys game in that 11-year stretch was called by Pat Summerall and John Madden for either CBS or Fox. Now what could have possessed the NFL to keep the NFC's biggest non-division rivalry of the time out of the view of Frank and Al and Dan?
@LogoAttitude
@LogoAttitude 2 жыл бұрын
In their defense, the NFL kept the 1987 alignment for 1988 after the Cardinals moved from St. Louis to Phoenix, which should have triggered a realignment that sent the Colts and Chiefs to the AFC Central, the Steelers to the AFC East, the Saints to the NFC Central, the Buccaneers and Falcons to the NFC East, and the Cardinals and Cowboys to the NFC West. This would have allowed the 49ers and Cowboys to meet twice a year. After the Cowboys got good again, one game per year could have been on ABC, and the other on CBS through 1993, and Fox from 1994.

I too wondered why this game never went to prime time (MNF, SNF). I'm guessing it might of had to do something with the producers at CBS/FOX, they knew this game was a big attraction and produces high ratings (especially in the 90's). So they made sure they always had this game no matter what.
