When I was newly natural, it was disappointing to learn that my 4c hair doesn't coil and curl like the styles I was seeing in magazines and on IG. I got over it!

I went natural with my 4c hair maybe 4 yrs ago not until recently have I come to wear my hair straight n natural. It is beautiful and thick and black, I actually found a hairdresser where my hair does not shrink down and guess what, no ouchies when she combs thru it. I was ready to give up and go back to weaves n braids I am so thankful to my hairstylist. PS my hairstylist does NOT hair shame me as my previous hairdresser had done for so long #NOTCOOL

From childhood, my mom didnt understand my hair so she didnt know how to care for it in order for it to grow. Hence I was bullied mercilessly by my own people which is where the hatred for my hair began. I started to wear hair extensions and quickly learned it was more acceptable and it became a crutch as well as a way for me to hide. However, I soon discovered that my hair would grow like crazy (in protective styles) and after it got to a certain length, I would put chemicals in it. In turn, it would fall out. I had no idea that my hair thrived naturally and that it does not like chemicals. 30 years later, I am beginning to accept my hair, and learning how to properly care for it. It's the longest my hair has ever been as a result. I still wear protective styles but it keeps my hands out of it! Thank you so much for this video. I am in my early 50's and just learning to embrace my hair. We have to do better with how we treat each other!

Thanks for the positivity. There was a recent trend of type 4 youtubers using very negative video titles and vomit emojis, etc in the thumbnails, talking about hating their hair. While I have never had any issues with my hair, it did make me a little apprehensive and nervous to go on to KZbin. Another problematic KZbin thumbnail trend is using a before pic without make up and unstyled type 4 hair often with a sad/neutral facial expression, juxtaposed with an after pic with a full beat, a customised wig on and a beaming smile.

What I do for my hair won't work for everyone(I have to load my hair with moisturizer 😂), and what other type 4's do for their hair won't work for me. Everyone is different, and you have to try many things until you find what works for you. All these natural tips and tricks should be used only as a starting reference point.

How will I find out what works for me as a 12 year old? Me nor my parents have the money to buy different 4c hair products. I honestly don't think waiting till I get older will help my hair because my hair would be pretty much *destroyed* by then. I have been researching and watching 4c hair videos since last year. I have never hated my 4c hair. When I decided to go natural, she was like someone I knew vaguely in kindergarten, hadn’t seen her since - didn’t know what she looked like and would’ve probably walk straight past her in the street. We were indifferent strangers. Over the years, as I have gotten more comfortable in my skin and spent time doting on my hair I have grown to love her. It’s not all roses, we have our disagreements and frustrations are normal, but all in all my experience with her is mostly positive.

I really wish the little girl that suffered her whole life had been told this. I'm crying for her. Some of the most devastatingly hurtful things I've ever heard or felt in my heart from others came from my inner core....my momma, brothers, aunties, cousins with "good hair" etc. Times were different back then y'all. My family has apologized lately. When you know better, you do better. Nappy Fu I've said this before but I absolutely adore you and your channel. May you be blessed for enlightening so many. ❤

@@Dr.Sharron ok here are a few facts... You and your aunties dont represent the entire set if 4c women. So yes, there exceptions. But, on average, the kinkier the hair, the weaker the strands are. Though it's true that its easier for hair to grow long when its strong, having thick, long hair doesn't equate to having strong hair. I can say this because I have thick long hair that is extremely fragile. On the flip side, having thinning hair doesn't mean that the strands are weak... some types of hair loss is just genetic and those genes may have nothing to do with the strength of the hair. Finally, anywhere that you search for information concerning it, you'll find that type 4 hair is the weakest. Also, we can love our hair even if it is weak, short and thin. Please dont be making unreal statements as reasons for 4c ppl to love their hair. Thanks EDIT: additionally, you've show some level of contempt for the average 4c girl whose hair isn't thick and long... the way you spoke about God not giving YOUR family THOSE genes.

Envy exists within the hearts of all men. I think we desired what the others had and that caused us to hate what we don't. Just like the "colonizers" envy the things that black women have. People are always quick to blame others for why they cannot love themselves. If my own mother could not tell me to appreciate my culture why should some other culture do that? Instead I learned to appreciate and take care of my own hair. Self Love is just that. One learning to love themselves despite supposed "standards" of beauty. How can anyone learn to love and accept your differences if you cannot love and accept your differences? And yet WHY should anyone HAVE to accept your differences? They don't. Perhaps we adapt to fit in and get a job, but like any place after awhile we begin to show more of who we are. Then they come to accept you and possible differences, but not because YOU are black and not because they have to but because of YOU and who YOU are. That is why it hurts the most to be rejected by the ones who already know you and yet accepted by those who don't.

I've always loved my hair I wished it would grow a little bit better and what I'm learning is that how I maintain my here will help it grow. But I have never had a problem with my hair. I don't think I've ever expected my here to be anything other than what it is maybe a little bit more cooperative at time but hey my hair is stubborn just like me so what can I say lol. I have hated my 4c hair. I realized, even more so when I moved to a different country and things were not so readily available to me as they were in the US that I couldn't just go to the corner store and pick up some hair and hide it away. Now, honestly, my hair is in braids, but what I've found is amongst the population of Surinaams women that are in the country that I am in, they made their hair work. For me, it didn't happen till I met one, asked questions, and then found your channel. No joke. I hated my hair all the way to that point. I'm 37 years old. Can you imagine? For so long, hating my hair, relaxing, pressing, wigging....It didn't matter, I did it. All for the purposes of "unreal expectations" as you mentioned. Now, since about 6-7 months ago, I can say that I love and RESPECT my hair. Thanks for sharing your videos. They really do help. At least, they helped me.

I've been natural 2 years now and my hair is about 8 to 9 inches. When I did the big chop I was loving my TWA. I didn't comb out my hair for a LONG while. But when my hair started to grow out I realised I had COMPLETELY forgotten my 4c texture. I must admit I experienced some negative emotions towards it at this point. But thankfully my hair ignored me and did her thing. So recently I've decided to stop being lazy and start to reciprocate the love. I actually finger detangled my hair last nite to prepare for wash day and it wasn't that bad. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing less hair come out as opposed to using a comb. Like you said in one of your other videos.... it's a mindset. 4c hair needs to be loved in order for her to thrive. Accept it and move on. So I'm going to be positive about my hair from now on, even when it comes to wash day lol. Thanks for the eye opener Nappy Fu

I think going natural is such a journey of self realization. It’s a true test of self love and a journey of getting to know and love who we are as a people. It’s understanding that our hair is beautiful no matter the texture and then learning what it needs to flourish. I never “hated” my hair, but I definitely was REALLY FRUSTRATED with it. I didn’t know how to manage it, I hadn’t found a shamp/cond combo that REALLY worked well for me and I’m extremely impatient. Of course on top of all that, I’ve never been great at styling and things. I think every sistah within the 4c spectrum (because every 4c isn’t the same) has to first find their magic product combo. Be it DIY or commercial or both (I use a combination). That’s where you will see a huge difference in the life of your hair. When I finally found great products 4 years later, detangling became a breeze, wash-day took less time and even with inflammatory arthritis, I enjoyed it more. My hair is looking and feeling healthier since I found my product combo. Also, I recommend that as 4c, don’t try doing 3c hair regimens. Or having 4a expectations. Or if you’re a course, kinky 4c don’t compare yourself to a silky, coily 4c. I used to get really frustrated because I saw NO ONE with my 4c, coily hair represented on KZbin. I’m not good at styling my hair and desperately wanted someone with hair like mine, to show me the way!! Reality is.........YOU have to figure out your own hair through love and patience. No one can do it for you. I love my coils. Of course at first I wished I wished for a looser curl pattern.......but that was out of sheer laziness!! I don’t like doing hair 💁🏽‍♀️. But I love my coils and I can’t believe we spent so many years being shamed into thinking our hair was anything less than the gorgeous CROWNS of kinks, coils and curls that they are.

@@DH-uw3us yes it's easy to brainwash a child that's exactly what it is. The older generation started off that way by default to try to fit in and I grew up with a lot of pain associated with getting my hair done. Physically and emotionally. There were lots of name-calling when my roots grew in. I felt like I literally had to get perms all my life until I got my brainwashed again when I join the military LOL I didn't think they could do that but joining the military made me think if I can change all those other things about me. I could change my hair now that I know how to take care of myself better. It's about loving yourself becoming an adult and taking responsibility for every strand on your own head. Hopefully when I have kids I have time to do their hair more thoughtfully. Not rushed or rough handled or treated like a burden. It was hard to change but i never gave up. GOD did not give me more than i could handle. My hair is for me.

@@AmandaD33 Sorry you had to endure that. Its sad how common this is in our community. Its not just hair either. A lot of times there is colorism that goes along with it, but that's a whole can of worms that doesn't really need to be brought up right now. I hope more women are learning to embrace their hair as well as their children's hair and not seeing it as we did back in the day. I don't have any kids but I have nieces and they are all natural and I am so happy. It takes more work and effort, but it is worth it for their self-esteem and the health of their hair.

Even looking at this video, I'm having anxiety-filled flashbacks of spending HOURSSSSS detangling, sectioning, prepooing, washing, deep conditionining, moisturizing, resectioning, etc, etc, etc. To me it, just felt like no other texture had to put in HALF as much work as people with 4c hair did. The best decision of my entire life was last October when I decided to start locking! -insert praise hands here- I can't put into words the burden that has been removed from me! I’ve come to find the true nature of the beauty within me and it’s flourishing on the outside. I’m now desperately praying that those sisters who are still entrapped by their mental slavery that they be freed from this stronghold and know that they are fearfully and wonderfully made by our Heavenly Father.

I don't usually comment on YT but I thought this video really triggered a response. I have also always loved my 4c hair since becoming natural almost 4yrs ago, but recently I find myself dissatisfied with the lack of density and thickness of my hair due to only seeing the opposite ( thick and dense ) but watching youtubers like yourself reiterates that I am not alone and it's normal which in turn reminds me how much I really do love my hair so Thank you a million times over

My hair is 3C/4A and on the lower end of medium density. I was not always a fan of my hair density because to me for a long time nothing looked worst than long, non-voluminous hair. I big chopped in March after relaxing my hair for many years. I have a few small bald spots from chemical burns over the years which made my relaxed hair look really thin. I am now relearning how to care for my natural hair which is 6 inches in length at most. I keep it simple and just let my hair do what it does naturally. My hair is really coily and coils naturally and so finger coils are my go-to style. Thanks to you NappyFu, you have made my natural hair journey so much easier. Prepooing changed the game for me as I wash my hair twice per month and finger coils can create tangles when left in place for more than a week.

Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve struggled with accepting my 4c hair but it’s like you said, it was more about being disappointed that my hair didn’t “do” what I wanted or didn’t look like the Pinterest picture of wash and go curls that I wanted. I also struggle with ccca alopecia which has mad it even more difficult to maintain length and fullness. I haven’t given up though!! And honestly the tips on your page have been so helpful!! Thanks!

Whatever I learned about my hair when I was growing up, I learned from my elders. “Oh I got to mess with that child’s hair today. I just might as well send her to the hair dressers and let her do it.” During the 50’s and early 60’s 4c hair was nothing to be proud of. The majority of magazines of that era featured White faces and ladies with straight silky hair. So I never grew up adorning my hair and then seeing how it would never grow, why bother. Until, I saw your KZbin videos. And how you owned and loved your hair as if it were a young flower growing from the earth. Since watching you I am learning to love that girl on top of my head and she is growing strong and beautiful. I have learned to be tolerant, taking time to finger comb, wash, condition and moisturize her. And because of you she is bearing an abundance of fruit, my hair is almost shoulder length. So here is to you my Dear Nappy Fu, Keep on Keeping on!

I’ve never hated my hair, but I have been very frustrated with it in the past, because I hadn’t taken the time to understand it. Now that I do, and that’s a continual process, I both love and appreciate my hair. I think the proliferation of all those “I hate my 4c hair” videos came from the fact that a lot of content creators realized those videos get a lot of videos and they took advantage of that. Many videos with that title or that use that as a hashtag are not really about hating 4c hair.

Wow Nappy Fu. This video was uploaded at the right time. I am currently a junior at college. During my sophomore year, I cut my 4C hair with scissors for no reason. I thought my hair was too "difficult." I did not love my hair. I must point out that I have been natural my entire life. All 20 years. In fact, I have never permed my hair before. What motivated me to love my hair again was just what you said. Believing that I am unique and GOOD. I had to ask myself if I hate my hair.... Do I hate myself? Self love was my answer y'all. I had to learn to love myself from head to toe. Today, my hair is growing and people within my circle do notice the difference. Ladies, our hair can do wonders. You have to let it. Our hair defies gravity and it tells our story.

My texture doesn’t bother me. My problem is my density and it’s fine. Hard to deal with low density fine hair. Never looks like anything no matter how much I do to it. Stretching it just makes it see through. If that’s not bad enough, since being natural, I’ve developed alopecia.

mswtaz94 May I ask if you always style your hair soaking wet, and if you pull a lot on your edges? A friend of a friend developed traction alopecia. Also I noticed that over manipulation of fine hair while soaking wet is a recipe for disaster. Have you tried treating the areas with castor oil steeped with clove? You can look up a recipe online. Doing a hot oil treatment and stimulating massage? It might help. Best of luck.

Aleaha Wag-Quiñones I don’t have traction alopecia. I have alopecia areata. I never style wet because I have like 80% shrinkage or more. I see a dermatologist. I get shots and it grows back. It seems like certain oils triggers it in spring and fall. I have seasonal allergies and it seems to flare then. My allergist thinks it may be allergy related.

I've never hated my hair always loved it. Even when I was relaxed I always had an obsession with afros. For about the first 3 years of being natural I mainly wore different variations of afros and loved it. My wash days are a breeze for me. I usually wash twice a week. Unless I'm just moving extra slow, it takes me no more than an hour to an hour and a half to wash and style.

Great Nap Chat question. I hated my 4c hair growing up because I was always teased about it. I always wore the little I had straightened or in a TWA. I used chemicals from the time so was a teen through 49 years old. When I started my slow transition to natural a little over 4 years ago I again hated my natural hair when it was about the time I would normally put another hit of creamy crack in it. But wait this time that self hate for my hair lasted only about 30 seconds. I now realized that was just the hurt if my childhood. I now realized how beautiful my hair was. I was inspired to go natural by seeing so many beautiful natural yes even those with 4c hair. I realized my hair can be just as beautiful given the proper care. I love my hair now. I'm no longer frustrated since I know how to care for my hair and NappyFu you were my initial teacher early in my journey. Your tips helped me to stay on this journey and not turn back.

Thank you for another amazing and inspiring video! I rarely comment (lazy) but I hope my story will inspire someone here. I returned natural on November 6, 2011 and have never looked back since. I fell in love with my 4c kinks the day I woke up to the realization that God did not make a mistake creating me with this hair. Why was I struggling to constantly fix it when I hated EVERY moment of it?? I used to dread going for relaxer retouches. I dreaded the process. Then there was the hair dryer business when setting to style my hair. It gave me fever. I ended up always leaving my hair unruly and it was so unhealthy, dry, brittle and faced chronic breakage. The day I had my epiphany I felt freed. I breathed easier. And I calmly walked into a barbers and told him to chop it all off. The level of love I had for my hair has never diminished and if anything it has increased over the years. I started sharing my hair journey and inspiring others to love their hair since 2012. Those who followed my journey have seen me grow my hair long and healthy and it makes me so happy to meet some of them and they walk up to me and say “you made me love my hair”. I always say “l am my hair” because I believe that the texture of our hair is the main identifying factor of our race. There are other races with darker skin tones but these kinks are reserved for us Africans. It is with pride, deep love and appreciation that I carry my crown. ❤️

Exactly. I see so many videos lately of people going back to relaxers because it’s “easier to manage” and that just shows me that a lot of people went natural because it was popular at the moment and not to actually learn their hair. It does take a while to get used to something you haven’t done most of your life but really after a few years it should be easy. There’s still a lot of people over manipulating and trying to get their hair to do things it can’t do.

I’ve never hated my hair, I’ve been frustrated with it at times. But that’s was due to my lack of time taking care of it and from that neglect my hair would break off. I’ve had to start my hair journey over twice now and every time I learn something new about my hair. I also think my mother and family played a big part in why I have never hated my hair. I was always the one that had the hair that everyone wanted to play with. While I never like combining my hair or like anyone touching it either. I just always let it do what it wanted to do, then this whole hair typing thing came along (which I still don’t truly understand), causing me to get away from the things that have always worked for my hair I to a world of destructive behavior towards my hair. What works for you doesn’t always work for me is my motto these days. I end by saying hating my hair is like hating a part of me, which is NOT ACCEPTABLE! I thank you NappyFu for your positive words of encouragement ❤️😊

Haven't been watching your videos in a while (life, you know how it is). However, this video had me feeling some kind of way. I've noticed how we as women always want what we don't have! Straighter hair, bigger boobs etc. I'm 60 and have been natural for a while. Jacked my hair up twice and had to start all over. But I've never hated my type 4 hair! I think what has worked for me is I've always appreciated how versatile it is. I can look different every day of the week if I want to!! Not all textures can do that. I am mindful of over manipulation (it's how I jacked it up the second time), but I really love all it can do. I agree with you: God made me this way and he's says it's all good!

I was fortunate that my mom always told me my hair is beautiful so I don't believe I ever hated it. Apparently, I used to beg to have my hair big like Diana Ross when I was small and I loved to see my hair type and skin represented on tv. I did go through some yrs where I wanted a relaxer simply to fit in with the beauty standard I was exposed to in my surroundings. As an adult, once I realized that my relaxed hair was always doomed to be damaged, I was determined to go natural again. It took a few attempts to transition but thanks to KZbin channels like this one, I was able to start learning about my natural hair and I never looked back. I could never hate the hair God gave me; we have to love ourselves thru&thru; I agree with you, Ms. NappyFu!🙏🏽

My hair has been quite a journey for me, I often see myself catching other people's opinion about it, and they're never positive about it. So I started to always go to an hairdresser, and she always pulled my hair like there's no tomorrow, but I liked the outcome so I kept going there, and my hair last me a long time. But the past year I just started to watch videos about how to take care of natural hair, and they amazed me, so I took my braids out, and my hair was pretty much damaged, but I took care of it, and now I'm proud to say that finally I love my hair so much, that I'm not going to any hairstyler that seems to not know how to take care of it. Love your hair please, it's beautiful the way it is.

Many 4c haired people are frustrated with their hair because of the expectations they have for their hair. This is shown by doing too much with their hair and experimenting with unnecessary products when simplicity is key. If you know your hair is fragile, it breaks a lot, and is dry - instead of experimenting with wash n go's, braidouts, and twist outs, do a protective style. You can always do those other styles on a special day or week. But those styles require high-maintenance and manipulation that you don't want. When I first when natural, I did protective styles but it was when I fell off, I began to be frustrated with doing it every week. I started doing it again around this year and I wash my hair every 2-3 weeks: I have so much more time and it works with my schedule. I just re-oil and moisturize if I feel its needed or when I have time. You have to make sure your hair-care routine fits your schedule or else you will get tired of it. And understand your hair as well. I know my hair gets extremely tangled because I get a lot of shedding. If my hair was loose, it would be hard to maintain or remove because my hair shrinks overtime. Protective styles allow me to handle my shedding accordingly to prevent unnecessary knots. For us 4b and 4c girls, simplicity is key. I've never hated my texture but before I just never knew how to work with it. And I think that's the dilemma with some of us. We try so hard to work against it with our expectations when we should work with it.
