Your theory about the hair being dry causing tangles is absolutely in point. I have 4c low porosity hair, and when I tell you!😭 Once it’s dry it’s basically game over and I have to not only re-wet my hair, but also detangle and re-up on the moisturizer. This natural hair thang ain’t no game🤣

100% agree with dehydration!!!! For me, I HAVE to redo my wash n go's every 3 days or my hair tangles (this is why I don't do them every wash day anymore 🙃). Gotta keep that hair moisturized!!! I do not stretch my hair (unless you count twist outs? Which i don't because it's a style), I love my shrinkage. That's the point if having an afro...which is why I went natural in the first place. P.S - I absolutely love see your hair out. Love those cute little tiny coils. I love 4C hair, I just think it so beautiful.

At first the shrinkage was getting on my nerve.. Not seeing the real length but in my journey I realized it’s a sign of healthy hair. I’ve been doing wash n go since 2020 (I thought I could never ). You were on point with all your tips. Having healthy end and detangling with a tool like a brush before styling is a must. I didn’t like my first wash n go but with practice I got the hang of it.

I trim my hair every three months, detangle with a tool and wash my hair every 8 to 10 days and I have minimal tangles. I don't prepoo. I also do cream only wash and gos, no mousse or gels. I use a leave in, a cream and seal with olive oil. My wash and go is defined, moisturized and has volume. I love shrinkage because it gives my medium density hair the appearance of volume. I have 4A hair.

My biggest tip for avoiding tangles would be to reset your style more frequently. If you wash your hair every 2-weeks, start washing it once a week. Less shed hair = less opportunities for tangles in kinky hair. Also do not stretch your hair. I found that when the hair isn't stretched it retains moisture and definition longer. When the hair is clumped, defined, and moisturized you get fewer tangles.

I wear wash and go's in the summer when the air is a little less dry. I embrace the shrinkage although mine starts to get a bit frizzier and less defined as the days go by. I embrace the frizz! It's kind of a softer hippie fro. I have high porosity hair so I have to mist my hair every day and sometimes twice a day. I like to use rose water or As I Am Castor Water for hydration boost. I do not reapply gel or cream all over. That's a recipe for product build up in my fro. If I do reapply gel or cream it is only to a few pieces on my edges, hairline or nape. The middle of my head I tend to leave alone and just let it do its thing. My key to less tangles is a strong holding gel and lots of moisture. The trim helps but I only go every 12 weeks. If I need to dust I will. I'm a bit scissor happy but I don't mind short hair.

Yes, I use to apply Aloe Vera juice on my hair before detangling and noticed the shrinkage from it made my hair more tangled, so I only apply almond oil, leave it on my hair for an hour or two, then detangle using only my fingers, this is much better. Now that my hair is almost waist length, the struggle of detangling grows lol! I use to do two-strand twists as my protective style, but not anymore, I only braid my hair, I have learned that braiding it now, stretches my hair more decreasing tangling, great tips be the way.

Very informative. A couple of things I would like to add. I find that hair shed likes to tangle on the way down and take out other hairs around it. When applying product avoid scrunching it in at the ends. This can create tangles. Lastly, hygral fatigue might not be a myth. I avoided leaving the product on over night and had less hair loss the next day when detangling. The oil too. Not sure about the oil. I find it makes me more tangly. I don't think it's that slippy.

I used to get tangles all the time with wash and go's now they've gone to almost to zero. Wash and go is my go to and I redo my hair every 5-8 days. I have type 4b although I dont use hair typing but just to give an idea. Key for me is using a detangling brush during conditioning (if you use the right brush and technique there should be no breakage). Actually shampooing my hair is the single best way to combat dryness for me. Also using a hard hat hair dryer - letting your hair air dry for me causes more frizz = knots. Finally get a hair cut because if you rarely trim you need one bad lol and then trim ends every 3-4 months without fail

I don't stretch my WnG either. I didn't want to manipulate my natural curl pattern. My feeling was that eventually length would come and my WnG would be longer. That turned out to be true for me. Yes, I believe tattered ends and lack of moisture cause unnecessary tangles in a WnG. Since I don't like spritzing and all of that, I just get in the shower and redo my WnG every 5 - 7 days. WnG is my style of choice and I wear it 95% of the time so I had to learn how to make them work for me.

your right your right your right. I too like to wear a shrunken fro. I do alot. I love playing in.my hair so wash is a treat. if I've been wearing a wash and go for five days, my hair has become dehydrated. all hair has a natural time when the moisture evaporates. mine is five days. that's wash day. I first oil up with an oil product from kiehls. leave in for a few hours or overnight. GO in with my favorite detangling prep for twenty minutes. Rinse. THEN , 🤣I go in with #3 of olaplex, Then wash deep condition, etc. tangles don't have a chance. the hair is moisturized and the nappy fro is froin. Once in a while I will wear a bun, but my go to is the fro.

Lol, sis you are HILARIOUS…and I’m here for it!! 🤣 I never do wash and go’s mainly because I never really saw my curl pattern, so….🤷🏾‍♀️ Lately, I’ve been heat stretching (blow drying) my hair and let me tell you…..It’s a GAME CHANGER for me!! I never used to use heat and I actually got mad when others did (sorry ladies, I didn’t know😔). My plan is to blow dry once or twice a month, with 3 layers of heat protection, and then the weeks I was my hair and don’t blow dry, I’ll be roller setting it. Heat stretching helps me with no SSN, and I’m able to manage my hair better, PLUS, I can do my hair fairly quickly because it’s thick and I’m really not used to doing my hair, but I’m learning.

I have always embraced my shrinkage, however, as I learned how to deal with my hair better than what I had been, I was now learning that I should keep it stretched and so I was now NOT able to to enjoy my shrinkage as I had in the past. I got to wondering “What if I wanted to tell someone how to get from the current state of shrinkage and tangles to keeping the hair in a stretched state with minimal knots. How would I do that while maintaining the integrity of the most amount of MY OWN hair strands after this experiment of purposely returning my hair to the state where it shrinks, kinks, knots, and tangles? I believed I had it all worked out and I was getting ready to take the plunge into washing my hair maybe in sections (or maybe without sections) .I hadn’t decided yet, but the goal was to simulate what it would be like when someone has not had any real training on how to take care of their 4C hair and now they are learning how to take care of their hair from taking it from a state of being shrunken to maintaining the hair in a stretched state from wash day to wash day in order for the hair to grow long. - Because I feel, to some extent, you have to choose. (I could be wrong but that’s where I’m at right now 😅.) I also feel that since the beginning of my natural hair journey, my hair would get to a certain point and then not grow anymore. I was about to do something drastic with my hair but then I ran across videos of people that appeared to have the understanding of HOW TO HANDLE my type of hair and I decided to experiment. I have seen my hair grow to lengths that I had never previously thought possible with extremely kinky hair. My hair is currently at a length where I can continue to experiment with it a little because it is not down my back yet to the point that I feel would require basing the experiment on prior information gained from your own hair journey so to not run the risk of experimenting with something that could go horribly wrong leaving the hair fragile. OK! Especially if length is your goal and you can actually see it getting there 👩🏾‍🦱 - So before taking this plunge to undoing my sections and washing my hair all loose, I found this video, well actually, 🫵🏾 popped ALL UP ON MY SCREEN! And so your video has information that has set my understanding over the top! 👊🏾Thank you for this video! I learned that the detangling of the ends doesn’t have to all be done at one particular step in the process. I am now ready to reset my hair all the way to the beginning and document my progress. Each one teach one ☝🏾. I BELIEVE THAT THE CREATOR LOVES ❤️ SEEING OUR HAIR THE WAY IT WAS MADE!

I wish black women would just do 3 things.... Dust the ends very often (every 6-8 weeks) and cut out single strands knots (do not ignore them/comb through them) Use a small amount of a heavy/creamy moisturiser. Use grease on their hair and scalp after moisturising. Old Skool is the best Skool.

Thank you. Notice men who do grow out their hair, keep it simple have the longest most beautiful hair and they don’t have a bunch of products or do anything fancy. It’s us women who complicate things and have a million styles so it’s hard to retain length.

Try Miche lavish leave in conditioner. Its a game changer but it is slightly pricey due to shipping. Its worth it to me because its very moisturizing and I can easily detangle my 4a-c coils with it.

All of your causes for tangles is on point for 4C hair. But if one is using The Doux, it's paramount to only use All Doux products for stella results. The owner has videos showing us how to use them. When I was searching videos to see The Doux results on 4C hair, most of them would add a product from a different company and then complain about the results. I use One Love as a pre poo to give slip and remove any tangles before washing with the Moisture Shampoo. Then The Rinse Conditioner, Easy Tamer, Twist Cream then The Mousse. When removing my twists I use the Finishing Cream. The hair stayed soft, tangle free and on my head.

Good point!!! I completely agree when using a brand that has products for each step. It always works best together. And sometimes do'n't play well with others, lol.
