The initial introduction was such a great way to preview the dimensional relationship in gameplay. I'd really love to see these sorts of mechanics being used in a limited capacity in a game like _The Sinking City._ That game's _Arkham Asylum_ style detective mode could be what allows you to shift through the dimensions present in an area where there's been some weird goings ons. That would let you potentially experience a range of oddities from somewhere like this that slips into the fourth dimension, or something more like the non-Euclidian experience in _Hyperbolica_ depending on what's happening in the area. By doing that, it starts to make sense that you're drawing more attention to yourself from the Eldritch horrors that are nearby and can't be perceived by humans normally, and why the risks of seeing and learning more about the Lovecraftian horrors slowly has you descending into rambling madness when you try to explain it to anyone else.

The lands all broken up, seemingly appearing and disappearing at random and the widths of blocks are rarely consistent, all just because Frank can't see in 3d. So what it makes me wonder is if a being that naturally can see a full 4d image would see objects as being consistent, sense they wouldn't have to 'rotate their slice', since they'd just see the whole object just like we (humans) do in 3d.

if you build 2D walls along each 3D perpendicular axi to the first 2D wall and fill in between; you create a 3D wall. if you build 3D walls along each 3D perpendicular axi to the first 3D wall; you create a 3D room. Extrapolating this: if you build 3D walls along each 4D perpendicular axi to the first 3D wall and fill in between; you create a 4D wall. if you build 4D walls along each 4D perpendicular axi to the first 4D wall; you create a 4D room. Thus you make one 4D wall out of 4*solidity 3D walls (or one 3D room) that are made of 16*solidity^2 2D walls; where 'solidity' is how many walls per rotation, the more walls per rotation the more 'solid' (or 'filled in') the wall is. As an example: one wall of your house is made up of 1 2D wall every distance between each atom (which depends on the material the wall is made of). which is essentially what tom started doing there at the end but made the equivalent *not* of a one walled house - but the frame of only one wall.

The whole "building a house" thing could be explained like this: Imagine a 2D being in a 2D room. Lets also assume this 2D plane is vertical, so the being has a floor, two walls and a roof surrounding him. To him, he is completely surrounded and safe with no way in or out. But to us, a 3D being, we can see him and his house, as he is just a flat being inside a hollow square. For this 2D being to be completely incased he would have to build copies of the room to the left and right of his plane. However if he just left it at that, he would just have a square tunnel. To make his 2D house into a complete 3D one, hed have to "cap" the sides of his 3D room with completely filled in ones. This analogy works the same for us and this game. To make a 3D house 4D proof youd have to make copies of it to the left and right and cap it off with filled in ones. Well, actually there is one big difference, instead of "capping off" our house, you'd have to completely surround your house with filled in copies to make it completely 4D proof.

@coopergates96802 жыл бұрын
More like, there are three rotational freedoms that impact the direction the camera is facing in. Two of them change this vector such that it stays within the same 3D slice, but the other component requires that slice to rotate so that it still contains the camera's look direction. I wrote my app so that it projects from 4D to 3D instead of slicing, but if I took slices, the 3D slice would be viewed as everything that can be expressed in terms of the look direction and two axes orthogonal to it. This would leave a fourth axis which is perpendicular to that whole 3D slice. Each of those four orientation axes depending on the camera's rotation will usually have components in all four Cartesian axes, it would rarely just be a W or X axis. My version of your idea is a toggle key that 'rotates' which freedoms the mouse uses, so the mouse parameters cycle between 01, 12, and 20, if you could index the freedoms 0 to 2.
@kennethbeal2 жыл бұрын
@@coopergates9680 Nice, I like it! Do you have a pointer to your work? Thank you! I'd prefer a normal "two-way" toggle switch and of course, I'd make it user-configurable e.g., so I could have one key change the X axis to the W axis, and another key change the Y axis to the W axis, and allow those keys to be configurable, as well as "which axis changes to which other" if that makes sense. Might need further thought/a first coffee. :)
@coopergates96802 жыл бұрын
@@kennethbeal Oh, so you'd rather have two toggle keys rather than one for cycling, or the other option is a configurable boolean so the same toggle key switches a different freedom with rotating the slice. I wanted just one toggle key for that since I used another toggle key to influence which strafing directions WASD applies to, since there's an extra one of those also... I did upload a video with mine but it's also quite tiny, it's a bare bones software renderer, so it could be attached in an e-mail or really all over the place.
@kennethbeal2 жыл бұрын
@@coopergates9680 Well, my initial thought was a single toggle key that would change either the X or Y axis, to the W axis. From your comment, I added a second one to give more flexibility. And your requirement makes sense as well, not wanting to add too many extra keys. So I'll reduce mine back to a single, configurable key. Which could be a 2-way toggle, or 3-way, or heck let the user "write" the order that it toggles through, e.g., text field "XYZW" etc. :) I'll check your video, thanks!

to build a 2D building, you need four lines to make a square. To make a 3D building, you need to repeat that six times to make the six 2D faces of a cube. To make a 4D building, you need to repeat the the cube another eight times to make the eight 3D volumes of a 4D hypercube. To a 3D player, it would feel like your house had eight rooms all overlapping on the same space, each accessible by "rotating". But to the 4D enemies, you have a single room that's walled up on all sides.
