Good Lord! I’ve seen a lot of versions of Caligari but the restoration work on this is simply amazing. At first glance it looks at though it could have been filmed last week. You can actually see wrinkles on the actor’s faces, textures in wood and paint strokes on those painted sets! It’s incredible to me that all this detail is in the film but simply has to be uncovered and revealed. Phenomenal!

cant quite put my finger on to why... but these type of videos really make history feel so much closer. so long seeing their ridged movements and lack of expression in these old films it almost makes you belive they lived everyday life in black and white and silence... seeing them like this makes them feel like it was filmed today and they are just your average joe, because they were.

Mesmerising. The thought that millions of feet of film will one day be restored is far more exciting to me than any recent trailer I've seen for upcoming releases. PS: If Conrad Veidt is believed to be the inspiration for the Joker this must have had some influence on the design of the Penguin.

These actors knew back they would appear on fast moving grainy b/w film. That was standard? Here we see how they move at a natural pace.
@Lukecash2
@Lukecash2 2 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, the cameras and projectors were hand cranked. Due to expensive film cost, movies were shot at 16-18, f.p.s. Theater owners, hoping to get another showing in, projected films at 20-24 f.p.s. That all changed when sound was introduced: due to synchronization and ac motor technology improved, the standard became 24 f.p.s. So actors had no idea how their work would come out, except comedians learned early to use the known speed up to their advantage. When old films were converted for TV or theater, all did to standard 24 frames, no matter what it was shot at.

The films were not fast moving,they were filmed and show at different and natural speed. Movies were not that grainy (they are now because poor preservation) and in fact were not black and white but with tinted colors.

@ronevns

This is no new speculation, but I thought i’d bring it up as I've seen a few comments about it. I’ve often thought that if you were to compare Burton’s work to the films of the German Expressionism era, you would be surprised by all the stylistic similarities; Burton’s crooked, exaggerated settings are very Cabinet, Edward Scissorhands looks suspiciously alike Cesare, and Burton’s use of shadows have always reminded me of Nosferatu. Even his drawing style is reminiscent of the era. It be an intentional inspiration, or maybe he took inspiration from the Universal Monsters horror films (hence Vincent Price being the dominating man of pretty much all his work pre-Johnny Depp). But even that would actually make sense as to why these films still make you think of Burton, as the German Expressionist filmmakers fled to America after the Nazis took over, infecting Hollywood with all their macabre, dramatic goodness. Even the absolute classic, Dracula, was directed by (but not really credited to) Karl Freund, who was one of the German (well…Austrian, if we want to get picky) greats! If you like Burton’s work and are unfamiliar with this film movement, I strongly recommend The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (as above, of course), The Golem (hard to find, mind), Metropolis, Faust and The Man Who Laughs (or actually…just everything in Conrad Veidt’s filmography, thats a good bet too. That man is fascinating, but its a story for another day!). Ha, well pardon my enthusiasm. I have been studying German art and folklore over the past two years. Great video, thanks for sharing. Crazy to see all these people who passed away long ago looking so alive!

The frame rate adjustment is still really great, but I'm afraid the colorization process is getting more erratic with every release. One second it's way over-saturated and the next moment the color is washed out completely! For example, check the last scene (straight jacket). I'm sorry to say it's shoddy work. The earlier efforts seemed to have had much more care taken with quality control.
