The Eclipse, or the Courtship of the Sun and Moon ( French: L' Éclipse du Soleil en Pleine Lune ) is a 1907 film by • Georges Méliès
Synopsis . (0:07) During a conference, an old astronomer (Georges Méliès) explains that an eclipse will soon occur, (1:22) so all the scientists rush to the window with their telescopes: a large telescope shows the Moon and the Sun with human faces (3:00), they lick their lips, come closer, overlap and then move away again. (5:00) The old astronomer leans out of the tower to observe better, but he falls below and ends up upside down in a barrel full of water.
Méliès employs various scenic devices here, including rotating painted backdrops, pyrotechnics, and all the paraphernalia of a show that he has mastered for over ten years. However, it is the central scene that truly stands out, the eclipse (3:00), with its explicit sexual allusions.
Both the roles of the Sun and the Moon are played by men, making it one of the very first representations of homosexuality in cinema. It was originally produced as part of a music-hall show at La Cigale in Paris, similar to several other films by Méliès during that period, including An Adventurous Automobile Trip (1905) and The Conquest of the Pole (1912) by Georges Méliès: • À la conquête du Pôle ...

Melies was certainly a visionary. I think he had a pretty clear idea of how much potential Motion Pictures really had.

He was overtaken by those who followed and built on his techniques. Whether it was a lack of imagination or budget and equipment constraints, most of his movies were set up as if they were stage plays and recorded by a single, unmoving, camera. Other filmmakers, over time, developed zoom shots, close-ups, panning, and other techniques still used today.

Great video. So the sun is totally gay for the moon then. Interesting idea that. Never would have thought that up!

Nice short. From back in the old days when astronomers weren't afraid to burn their eyes out looking at an eclipse. Now, we close the schools because kids aren't bright enough to know not to stare at the eclipse.

@@christopherthorkon3997 And now 117 years later we may enjoy the fruits of his labor. Possibly the most creative filmaker that ever lived. An artist, director, actor, producer, EDITOR cameraman He did it all and in many cases, invented it. And to top it off, a Magician. The magic translated well to film.

Why would you have dramatic music over comic action? That's utterly inept.
