Any chance you will be getting and reviewing the recently available Orange Pi 5 MAX? I have one and I really like it; however, the OS support is few and far between. Running their version of Debian Bookworm Server with the Mate desktop added through Tasksel. I used your advice (sudo dpkg --configure -a) from your other video to fix the install issue. Thanx a bunch for sharing your knowledge, I know a lot of us would be pulling our hair out without these informative videos and tutorials.

I run 4 opi5+'s and one opi5 on armbian 24.8.2 with plasma. I use the opi5 as my main tv box and have had no problems. Brave browser, 4K60 is only ok, but I dont watch much at 4k. Most of what I watch is 1080. I use the official cases, because I like passive cooling, and have not had any issues with heat. I have run 4K30 for an hour to make sure it wouldnt throttle, and no problem with just passive cooling. However I would not pick up the device due to the case being hot, but that is not unexpected.

I didn't know the RK3588S had hardware decoding support for AV1! That's really cool! The first test was using VP9, the second, on the 4K TV, was using AV1, which is the best video codec available at the moment, but since it's relatively new, only recent CPUs have built-in support for hardware decoding; older ones, like the Broadcom in Raspberry Pi, use the CPU itself to do software decoding (which is extremely inefficient). This was one of my biggest disappointments with the Raspberry Pi 5, along with the wireless chip not supporting WiFi 6 (AX).
@terrydaktyllus13202 ай бұрын
I think anyone expecting an SBC to support 4K60 over wifi is setting their expectations far too highly anyway.
@brunosurkov2 ай бұрын
35Mb/s is enough to stream 4K60 content and even WiFI 4 (802.11n) is capable of that. When I mentioned WiFi 6, I'm not talking about bandwidth, I'm talking about latency. When you have many of these devices sharing the same wireless connection, e.g. in classrooms, latency becomes an issue and WiFi 6 fixes that with OFDMA. While WiFi 6 was indeed a bit unrealistic as most SBCs are still on this old tech, AV1 decode capability is really a bummer to not see on the RPi5.

It always amazes me that people impose these "artificial benchmarks" on SBCs anyway. If you REALLY need efficient 4K60 (and I still don't know why 4K is anything other than a gimmick, just to impress your mates with on social media) then get a decent PC with a good graphics card. With the price of used SFF PCs now anyway, you can pick up a 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 machine for less than the cost of a Raspberry Pi 5, cooler and case - so that's a better option immediately. I do genuinely laugh when people expect a tiny little SBC to do absolutely everything perfectly - they're NOT desktop replacements.
@erikkarsies48512 ай бұрын
@@terrydaktyllus1320 Well this is a hell of a lot better than I've seen so far from SBC's. But yeah even a small N100 MiniPC will do better. The problem for Orange Pi5 was the codecs in linux. I wonder how well Armbian runs on a Raspberry Pi 5?
@terrydaktyllus13202 ай бұрын
The Armbian team do a really good job for what they do and their philosophy is to maintain some degree of Linux support across as many SBCs as possible. However, in order to do that, they do a lot of automated Linux builds that they then just put up on the web site - but parts of it may not work properly until someone downloads and runs each image and then report bugs. In other words, if you're not willing to mess around with Linux and fix issues when you find them, then Armbian is not really for you unless there is simply nothing else (modern) to run on your specific SBC - at that point, you might as well stick with the official distro(s), so Raspbian in the case of the Pi 5.
