Excessive winds closed the Mountain Pass for cars but it does not stop a Nordic Express Train. It's 2021 and what resembles a decent winter has finally arrive in our part of the country.

I have been there. Over and over again, but just as a passenger. Through summer or winter, you wlll never find a railway line like this one. It is like climbing a mountain: different colours, a different angel, a new set of sunshine, some clouds, an evening or morning in a special light. It always is a new perspective. Enjoy the tour! Well, it just is like going on a ride. Forget the poetry. It is wonderful anyhow.

This was so well put that just had to pin your comment :D What you say is so true! Even though I'm working on this line everyday, it's never the same. It's always something new, the light, colors... conditions ... it's everything. No day is like the previous, and that is one of the reasons I really love what I'm doing :D

"...you will never find a railway line like this...". Well... no... you will not find a copy of that railway anywhere else....!!!! ....and probably not see the inside of so many tunnels elsewhere. But it you referring to spectacular nature/scenery I must say that you can impossibly have been much around whether that is in Norway or elsewhere in the world. There are other railway lines that easily can match Bergensbanen..... I have travelled them.... and Sørlandsbanen, Raumabanen, Nordlandsbanen and Ofotbanen will rank far above Bergensbanen. Have you ever tried to take a train ride across Corsica, up in the Andes mountains in Argentina or in Copper canyon in Mexico or the line across the Tibet plateau to Lhasa....??? .....probably not......

As an engineer (at least by training, if not by practice) I'm very impressed by the engineering of these lines every time I watch one of your videos. Particularly seeing those old tunnels with multiple turns, I think of the surveyors in the early part of the last century, or before, climbing over those very steep hillsides carrying surveying instruments to establish the grades and figure out how to align all those tunnels. It was an amazing achievement, to me rivaling the also amazing scenery.
@RailCowGirl

You and me both. I'm still in awe by the precision they did this without the digital help we have today. An engineering marvel that has been seen and used since 1853 and 1909

@@RailCowGirl Any idea why the Tunga Passing Loop @49:39 is inside the tunnel instead of just outside where it looks like there would be room? Seems like a much more expensive / difficult option.
@GaryGrube1
@GaryGrube1 2 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly! Every time I see those tunnels I think of the human element that went into them. And all of the people who laid their hands to it, from the civil engineers who put pencil to paper to design them to the people who actually dug and constructed the tunnels. How they made and physically executed these calculations is mind boggling! Even outside of the tunnels, calculating and executing the grates through those mountains is amazing.
@GaryGrube1
@GaryGrube1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Depaya My thoughts are that, inside the tunnel it is protected from the elements, snow and drifts, etc. Less track clearing and maintenance for a pass loop. A lot of effort to construct but less effort and more efficient and trouble free in the long run. But maybe there are other reasons.
@jonb23
@jonb23 2 жыл бұрын
@@Depaya The loop at Fagernut (I hope I spelt that right!) is the same. My theory it is to keep the points/switches away from the elements and avoid any unwanted failures, due to the vast amounts of snowfall in the winter months. The points at Finse are also protected by a smaller shelter too.

Thank you! So glad that you're feeling better ❤️ Yep, GreenCargo is using the Eurodual in their trains on the Bergen Line. Up to now they've had some challenges getting over the pass from the Bergen side because of the steep gradients and heavy loads. Now they've got locos that should be able to take those challenges with ease :) These locos have six axels compared to the BR185's four.

I just love these videos, the best cab views on KZbin and the additional information makes it even more interesting. We are definitelty visiting Norway (from UK) as soon as it is possible to ride the Bergen/Oslo line. Norway looks so beautiful. The only downside is the tremendous amount of vandalism people have done with spray paint along the trackside. I do wonder what the bosses think of these videos. They obviously encourage tourism so I guess they are happy with them. Thank you for all your work producing these, a lovely Sunday afternoon watch whilst we can't go out. We imagine we go to the cafe car to buy a coffee and cinnamon bun (which we already have ready for the trip).

I live in Florida and right now it's 85 degrees. Not hot but not cool either. I love watching these Rail Cow Girl videos of winter as it helps me feel cool. The trip through this beautiful countryside is one I will never get to see in person but very interesting even from here. I like to think about what it must have been like to blast this railroad through so much rock and tunneling must have been a brutal job. As the train goes along I see houses out in the middle of nowhere and I wonder what it is like to live there. I see no animals, no vehicles and no people. Where are all the people? Must be in the house or at work although I can't see how anyone can go to work in that snow. No kids either, maybe they are all in school but there again how would they get there in the snow? I see nice homes with chimneys but no smoke coming out. I'm sure they have electric or oil heat but wouldn't the fire place be going too.? Then we go through small towns and villages. I love seeing the homes and other buildings but there again very few vehicles and no people. There have to be people around somewhere but where are they? So I settle back and watch the snow go by and really enjoy it. Thanks for all your hard work Rail Cow Girl. I for one really enjoy it.

Thank you, I have to go to the hospital now. You exited that tunnel around the 50 minute mark and my chin dropped so hard I dislocated it. :P What a view (the entire trip is "what a view" but that one especially for me)

We are confined at home with invalid 97 year old Mother-in-Law. We are late comers to the channel. The views are incredibly beautiful and bring such smiles to my Mother In Laws face. She just lights up watching. We got her a larger TV for her to see it at the foot of her hospital bed in our house. Bless you for providing this entertainment for her. K&C

@@RailCowGirl My wife Cindy says I should have included we are from St Louis, Missouri which is the central part of the USA adjacent to the Mississippi River. Your waterways and lakes are much bluer and clearer than our muddy waters. I wanted to let you know I have flown your route Bergen to Oslo in Microsoft Flight Simulator. I zoomed in using the map in LittleNav Graph and created a flight plan following every major turn of the RR tracks. Then I flew it in " Live Weather" about 10 days ago. Unfortunately the weather was icey, snowy, overcast and hazy so I did not see much, but the flight plan executed perfectly. I'll have to try it again later after things change here regarding Hospice etc. My almost 97 year old Mother In Law is still smiling today while you're making all those twists and turns. We watched a midnight run you made 6 months ago. It never really got pitch black nor broad daylight. We were surprised how much nerve you have going through some kind of spooky places at low speeds in the dark. The Trolls could be lurking everywhere. That seemed more scary than Covid. You be safe out there. Kitt, Cindy & Evelyn.

So many beautiful but relatively isolated (until the early 20th century) valleys. It's no wonder there are numerous spoken language dialects in Norway.

That is so true. It's fascinating to hear a huge difference in dialect from one in one valley to the next. :) Especially here along the west coast of Norway.
