Bashundhara (Bengali: বসুন্ধরা আবাসিক এলাকা) is an affluent residential area of Vatara Thana in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The area is developed by Bashundhara Group.
The project of Basundhara was started in the 1980s. In 2011 portions of the housing project was declared illegal as they were considerable flood flow zones of Dhaka. In 2014 a cabinet committee changed the Dhaka detailed plan to make the project legal. The project was built on area made by filling low-lying marshland and flood flow zones. The administrative Dhaka District was first established in 1772, but the existence of urbanised settlements in the area that is now Dhaka city - dates from the 7th century. The present day Savar was the capital of the Sanbagh Kingdom during seventh and eighth century. The city area of Dhaka was ruled by the Buddhist kingdom of Kamarupa and the Pala Empire before passing to the control of the Hindu Sena dynasty in the 9th century. Many believe that the name of the city was derived after the establishment of the Goddess Dhakeshwari's temple by Ballal Sena in the 12th century. Dhaka and its surrounding area was identified as Bengalla around that period. This is because this area has not been handed over to the city council. When 90% of the area is fully constructed, then the road repair works will happen. If they fix the roads now, the roads will be damaged again when new construction on remaining vacant plots starts. Whenever there is a construction, roads are damaged beacause developers place the raw materials (bricks, steel, cement) on the road as there is shortage of storage space.
