First long-distance limited access highway in America. 1940. "The first American highway that's better than the American automobile," a press account at the time said. It was national news - a portent of the future of motoring. There was some skepticism beforehand whether there'd be enough traffic to repay the bonds -- but traffic from day 1 far exceeded projections.
