The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad operates out of Bryson City, NC over the former Southern Railway Murphy Branch. Since 1988, scenic excursions have been operated along the Tuckasegee River and into the Nantahala Gorge.
For the 2020 fall season, an impressive 25-car train was operated from Bryson City to the Nantahala Gorge. These trips were led by their former U.S. Army 2-8-0 1702, which was rebuilt to service in 2016. GP9s 1751 and 1755 would assist and return.
