Very cool video. Thanks. I've already gone the flatbed route. I have far too many trailers that I don't need. So I'm now looking for a 24 with beaver tail. Installing the airbags soon. My log mill is limited to 21'. so that should fit my needs. But I also own a JD210LE heavy tractor, a CK580 backhoe and a JD450 dozer. So the 24K trailer is in my future.

I use to travel at night when loaded and when I was over weight I would turn off my lights and keep hooking it. Also would give scale men a Christmas ham.

Something to watch out for CDL requirements go by GCWR of 26,000 or more. That's truck and trailer. So if the trailer is 23k than your truck must weight less than 3k, which it definitely doesn't. Your truck is more around 8-9k so 23+9 is 32,000 lb GCW. Which requires CDL since for commercial use. Something to look into since my buddy got $4000 in fines.

Yeah. I'm planning on getting DOT stickers for my setup, but for the average Joe is good to know the limits. Anytime I travel long distances I make sure to check my weights.

Lets make this simple. DOT will look at the gvwr of your trailer AND the gvwr or the truck pulling it. If the metal plate on your trailer says 23,000lbs and the sticker inside drivers door says 10-13,000 Thats the weight it can carry.... then you need a CDL. 23 plus 10 equals 33,000lbs. Any combo unit exceeding 26,001 lbs needs CDL. You are almost there just with the trailer. DOT loves to pull hotshot pullers over if they see a triple axle trailer or a tandem axle that has duals......Now heres the crazy part. Even if your trailer has NO LOAD on it they will ticket you and make you drop it, Because its based on the" potential to carry"! I know its crazy but its true,.. The only exemption for this is if you dont haul for money then you have to put decals on doors saying "Not for hire" or be a farmer and not leave a 150 mile radius.

Yes it would, it's not based on the state, it's called FMCSA law. I haul hotshot and it's based on GCWR (Gross combination weight rating) IF your truck has sticker of 10k and the trailer is 24k then that's 34k and you are required to have a CDLA IF you use it for commercial use. If its personal use you dont. If your over 26,001 lbs and used cor commercial use then you need CDLA

I’d be taking logs from our farm to a sawmill nearby. So I’d be exempt if I stay within a 150 mile radius? What’s the name or number of this law?

You basically set up the truck like a semi, but kept to a pickup for versatility, engine brakes are definitely helpful when towing more than 10 to 14 thousand pounds to help control the combination in downhills or in dangerous road situations. Federal requirement for CDL are if towing more than 10,000 pounds of trailer and load and vehicle or combination more than 26.001,pounds but do know that the new Medical Certification standard of most if not all states requires Self Certification with your state DMV online or in person at an office and the exam can only be done by a FMCSA Certified Medical Personnel and No One Else. Price varies on doctor and location for the exam part, no fee to self certify but a copy must be filed at the time of self certification before the end date of the card itself and re-certifying later than the cards end date and they will impose a small fee.

exhaust breaks aren't good for the truck are they won't that burn your valves or cylinders out

I was wondering why you have such a big trailer for a 2500? The weights you are talking about are way over the legal limits of the truck correct?

The only difference between a 2500 and a 3500 is a leaf spring. Everything else is the same. This truck is effectively a Dodge "7500". Keep in mind that a 04 2500 has a safe operating weight limit of 8k on the rear axle. It's a "7500" because it has 5000lbs air assist on the back axle. The one thing you have to be careful of is that you buy the best tires when operating a single rear wheel. I run a Hankook Dynapro AT-M, I role off the lot around ~900 for a full set. As far as pulling capacity it's a custom 5.9 Cummins, they speak for themselves. It's not uncommon for a 5.9 to be safely modded to 1000hp.

The Rocket Factory just because you put the bags on the truck doesn't mean you can legally tow that much, it's what's on the door decal. I know that the truck can handle it, but that doesn't make it legal.

Well that was an ignorant statement . You really shouldn't be giving out advice that's so far from the truth. My identical 2001 dodge rams, except one is 2500 and one 3500 have more differences than I could even list. "A leaf spring" .....for fucks sake

Any trailer being towed by a crew cab 4X4 diesel must be under 15,500 pounds gvw to not need a CDL with a "L" restriction. The added weight of the crew cab, 4X4 diesel decreases the weight that could be towed. A single cab gas engine 2 wd could tow 19,500 pounds before needing a cdl with "L" license. Even if you carry your own equipment and are not for hire. Any time the truck, trailer and load goes past 26,001 pounds you need a CDL. Does not matter if its for hire or not. Any trailer with three 7,000 lbs axles requires a CDL. The DOT rates my trailer at 37,000 pounds. Plus 9,000 for the pickup. The dot rates my gooseneck & truck at 46,000 pounds. I can stop within 30 feet at 20 mph with a GCVW of 32,000 pounds. I can stop that 32,000 pounds in under 120 feet from 60 mph. My pickup. 2wd single cab 2005 F250 super duty V10 industrial 3 valve gas. With the TOW COMMAND option. If I cross state lines with my toys (not for hire, Collector of medium duty trucks & vintage farm equipment). I must also have a DOT number and do everything a tractor//trailer commercial driver is required to do. So I stay within my state.

NITRO RYAN not true. Long bed vs short bed. Loaded trim vs base. All makes a difference. Total need to be under 26.001k period. No cdl no farm exemption

I have went the way you have with the logging trailer to supply logs for my milling and fire wood business. I went with the dually though in an 05 dodge Cummins. I also made another change to my truck. Change out the rotors and pads to a slotted set to help with heat dissipation. I used a brand called power slots on mine. There is no comparison. GVRWs are not based on the power of the truck, they are based solely on its ability to stop the weight you are towing. As far as the CDL requirement, I don't have one either. I have never been stopped and I tow logs passed scales almost every day with my company logo on the side of the truck.
