Seeing the train’s light approach from inside the tunnel, without catching the humming of the engine is very suspenseful..

Allegedly one of the most haunted US rail tunnels

Considering over 150 people died building it, I wouldn't be surprised.

I last visited this tunnel (eastern end, anyway) over 30 years ago. At that time it was virtually abandoned, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover several videos about the tunnel and to find that it is actually in regular use! When I was there we couldn't enter the tunnel because huge steel doors had been erected to prevent entry. I was informed that they could automatically open when a train approached but that was very seldom. I don't see those steel doors in any of the current videos.

They still have doors on the west end, however they're not to prevent entry but rather to prevent high winds through the tunnel in bad weather. Even these days the tunnel doesn't see much traffic. I've been there at least 5 times, and this was the only time I've actually seen trains go through it. It does see around 3-5 trains a day, it's just that they aren't necessarily in daylight.

@@NorfKhazad The tunnel sees 6-10 trains daily. 22K, 23K, 11R, 16R, EDRJ, RJED, AYRJ/RJAY (as needed grain), MOGR/GRMO (as needed ethonal), and AD-1 if it runs which passes twice on its turn job.

Yeah I know what u mean. I'm going to try and get out there on a Saturday around April and see what trains I can get on video that day. Have u seen any of my videos I've gotten from there a few times over the years?

There is a grade crossing about 500 feet from the tunnel portal.

Is this line still regularly used?
@NorfKhazad4 жыл бұрын
The tunnel had a cave in earlier in the year and it took about a month to reopen it, but it is in use again now. This is the Pan Am mainline.
