Finally, a video there we can see all of the Metrolink Valley sub and UP Mojave sub improvements from recent years. Thank you Amtrak, Metrolink and UP for making it all possible :-). I'm almost tempted to edit and subtitle all points of 'interest' which would of course take days (hint, hint). A good companion to the drone videos of this event on the Tehachapi webcam site. Bravo, bravo!

Union Pacific really needs to allow Amtrak to run daily service along the Tehachapi route.

Most (if not all) freight railroads would rather not see Amtrak at all use their rails. From the beginning in 1971, one of the stipulations is that they would host Amtrak for a fee (Amtrak basically being a tenant). Freight is way more profitable than passengers. Another requirement is that Amtrak has the right of way. A lot of times it doesn't happen, then you hear of complaining that a train trip took too long. Amtrak does get the short end of the stick with a lot of things☹️

I railfanned the detoured Amtraks on all those days except the 15th! The 14th my friend @CentralValley Railfan8311 and I went out to the Pepper Dr crossing which is around the 3:42:00 mark. The other days I went to Olive Dr which is just north of the Bakersfield yard and is not in this video.

Question. How did Amtrak handle the arrival into Emeryville and the subsequent departure? Did the engines decouple and do a runaround?

You know I've always thought of Amtrak having service between Lancaster and Bakersfield via Tehachapi if metrolink doesn't have plans to extend the AV line up north

Why not?

@@repulser93 Paul is probably referring to how Amtrak is doing now, because with Amtrak's recent CEOs they have been trying to make Amtrak profitable so that the government doesn't have to fund them. Due to these attempts the CEOs have been slowly turning Amtrak into a Airline on rails. And someday if Congress approves they might end long distance train travel all together because Amtrak has not been making very much a profit off of long distance trains. If anyone looks at this and sees if I might have got some detail wrong your welcome to correct I don't mind.

@@JinnothALL forms of transit are subsidized. You don't hear about the airlines or the highways, just passenger rail. For most of their lives, the railroads were over-regulated (the ICC). After WWII, the government threw bucket loads of money towards the airlines and the highways, and ignored the railroads. That's why today, the United States is in the 21st century, and using an 19th century rail network.

If you look at 8:30, you'll see two tracks curving off. That's near the Burbank Airport and that is the beginning of the Ventura Line/Coast Branch. Usually, the Starlate would have taken those tracks.
