Years ago, a friend drug me out to one of these events. I had never been, and I got to experience a throttle whack up close and personal. It felt like an elephant kicked me in the chest. The amount of power is just mind boggling. The friend I went with has since passed away, and I refuse to go to another one because I want to forever remember the magic of that day, one of the last times I got to spend time with my buddy.

@pro-seriesfabrication38103 жыл бұрын
Not that bad, maybe $100. ~$35/gal and the team I was on would burn through 3-4 gallons on the warmup depending on what all they'd need to check.
@kellyjensen94253 жыл бұрын
@@pro-seriesfabrication3810 Why do they burn that much fuel on warmup? I understand energy is used to turn the supercharger and that the engine has high displacement and just capable of producing incredible horsepower but if you’re burning 3-4 gallons of fuel on warmup how much horsepower is being created and where’s it all going? Some of it to turn the wheels, turn the engine, run the high pressure fuel pumps, supercharger, and then where, heat?
@pro-seriesfabrication38103 жыл бұрын
@@kellyjensen9425 Nitromethane has a bunch of oxygen in it (CH3NO2) so you have to dump a ton of fuel to reach the right stoichiometric ratio, which is approximately 1.7 parts air : 1 part fuel. Gasoline engines, at idle, are usually 14-15 parts air to 1 part fuel. So couple that with a 500" v8, a blower that turns over ~540 cubic inches per revolution, and a ~2600RPM idle and it's gonna burn through some fuel anytime its running. The hat nozzles also help provide lubricity and cooling to the blower. On the blown alcohol stuff I've worked on, you were still burning around a gallon a minute at idle.
@kellyjensen94253 жыл бұрын
@@pro-seriesfabrication3810 Awesome reply. I didn’t know the stoichiometric ratio required that little of air versus gas. Puts things in perspective seeing blowers that large and yet the fuel still providing .58% of the oxygen. No wonder you can dump that much fuel without hydrolocking. Also explains why you burn through it so fast. If nitro contains that much 02 I would think it’s going to consume more space per gallon. I can see how people like me make that mistake, because it’s Apple versus oranges and street pump gas is nothing like nitromethane. I’m curious if you know about clearances. I’ve always heard bearings and ring manufactures will list clearances for the application you’re using (street vs blown) and usually the clearances are looser if blown. I was watching MAHLE talk about their bearings and they said to always go tight because the oil will better distribute the load. I thought you went loose for a safety margin with heat and expansion of materials. Maybe it’s apples and oranges again but do you know if clearances are tight versus loose in a top fuel engine?

@horrgakx11 ай бұрын
So quick questions - 1) why do they need to do this? 2) why aren't they wearing hearing protection?
@scottannis264311 ай бұрын
They have to completely tear down the engines after every run because the motors produce over 10,000 HP and creates immense stress on parts. Some parts only last one run others maybe 3 or 4 runs. The throttle whack itself is more of a tradition but it's done to see if the engines running properly. And as for the hearing protection comes down to personal preferences, some people simply do not care about hearing loss

After every run, crews dissemble the engine to rebuild it completely, because after 3 seconds of 10,000 horsepower, parts begin to wear and break. They have under 75 minutes to take it all apart and put everything back together with new parts. After it is all assembled they start up the car and run it to make sure everything is working properly. Throttle whacking is a dying procedure that only a few teams practice nowadays, but it is a fan favorite! This was Scott Palmer and his team performing a throttle whack in Phoenix for the 2019 season.
