Actually the reason is George Lucas. He filmed attack of the clones and revenge of the sith with early digital movie cameras. These cameras whre not as sharp as 35 mm so you have to do these in 2k even that is a it of an upconvert job. Also he used alot of digital smoothing in the phantom menace for the digital effects so it's more of a issue of the prequels being products of a time when technology was in transition.

They definitely didn't have to remove the grain because of the CGI in TPM, but for the 3D release. Unfortunately, we probably won't get to see a pre DNR transfer of this wonderful film, and experience it in all its filmic glory. Such a shame. I'll mostly likely upgrade ROTS and R1 only. I don't consider the Disney trilkogy SW, so I couldn't care less about those. My favourite episode is a tie between AOTC and ROTS, but if I had to choose, probably ATOC, because it's romantic, the detective noir story with Obi Wan, the setpieces, visuals, music, and because it's foreboding, but not as heartbreaking as ROTS, which is so incredibly emotional every single time I watch it, which also is what makes it extremely awesome. Well, screw it: AOTC and ROTS are my favourites, oh and TESB, ANH, TPM and ROTJ.
@88detour4 жыл бұрын
The prequel transfers were dead on arrival, they could never be true UHD. That being said these are the best these film will ever look. I do think "The Phantom Menace" should have been the best looking if a total restoration was done.

@dantasticmania87284 жыл бұрын
Adding the DNR only helped into making TPM look worst. I can't stand it when they remove film grain over a so called cleaner image! Damn you Disney!
@88detour4 жыл бұрын
@@dantasticmania8728 Well, this was before Disney got their hands on this transfer. When "Menace" was released back in 1999 High Def wasn't a thing. Applying DNR to live action was necessary to blend in with the digital effects. As a result detail is often scrubbed away. A restoration process should have been done for "TPM". They should have used the original film negative and maybe re-shot some of the effects with today's technology. That way they wouldn't have to add much noise reduction. The result would have been a more pleasing presentation.

I was just comparing the UHD screen caps to the old Blu-ray screen caps on caps-a-holic for Ep.1, and sadly they are almost identical except the UHD is a tad brighter and slightly cropped vertically. They used the same mediocre master for this as the Blu-ray. It seems Ep1 and the original trilogy are a bust in UHD, but the other 5 are worth getting. The original trilogy, which should have benefited the most on UHD since it was shot on film, was botched with processing that destroyed the film look of the movies, and made them look like digital or TV.
