Also known as Wallingford Bypass Level Crossing.
The only level crossing on the Chosley and Wallingford heritage railway, located just outside Wallingford on a busy bypass road. The crossing was installed in the early 1990s when the Boxley Way (Wallingford Bypass) ring-road was constructed. Since the installation, the crossing has had its old halogen lights replaced with LED sets, however, the original barriers and alarms still remain, and are in a very tired and decrepit state. Therefore, this crossing could be considered very rare with its aged equipment. Four alarms here sound very shot and the barriers look quite old, being manufactured by "Smiths Industries Hydraulics Company". The heritage railway only have a few running days a year so this crossing is rarely used. The LED pedestrian lights do not flash when active which is quite unique. This video was filmed in 4K!

@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel yeah, I live in cholsey and the reason the dont maintain it is because the crossing only gets used 2-4 times a year, Cholsey wallingford railway, I wish we had more level crossings round here, but in 1967 they replaced the cholsey crossing with a bridge and raised the railway, because before wigwags, people drove through and we had to many accidents, and not enough staff to manually operate them.

I’m confused as to how the council thought to replace the perfectly fine halogen lights but not the alarms? The barriers here regularly malfunction nowadays, council need to renew the crossing with new alarms and barriers. Possibly adding more road paint too?

@@gemth9853 Its not the councils responsibility, its that of the railway. Network Rail gets rid of alot of equipment and many heritage railways capitalise on that, I imagine thats where they got those LED lights from.

The crossing is owned by Oxfordshire County Council who sub contact to Network Rail to look after it. I have seen this crossing many times as I live quite nearly (Abingdon) and have been on the railway many times. Nice video!!

Yeah, I'm surprised they installed a crossing when building the bypass here in the early 90s. The alarms seem to have had it, the halogens have already gone. And thanks! I never knew it would be so popular either 😂

The road is actually single carriageway upto the crossing, and can be seen from a good distance anyway.

This crossing was installed I think mid - late 1980s, and the only equipment changed so far has been the lights to LEDs.

There's four alarms here, one of them was not working, but the other three sound really bad. The crossing was installed in the early 1990s. The warning lights have been replaced but the alarms and barriers haven't yet. I'm planning to revisit this crossing in the Autumn to see it again.
