4K REVIEW: John Carpenter's Escape from L.A. | I got the white barcode...so what does that mean?

John Carpenter's Escape from L.A. finally hit 4K...but is it worth the upgrade? I was one of the (un)lucky few that got the original pressing, so what was my experience with the audio? Let's talk about it!

@Cinefessions Did you ever hear back from Paramount about the disc replacement? I wrote them a month ago and still haven't heard back.

I did, Shawn! They sent me my replacement about a month ago now. I'm surprised you haven't heard anything yet. I would guess they're just behind, but I have no idea. Good luck getting the replacement!

I just got the white barcode version from Amazon UK (collector's edition) 6/8/22 and the mix is perfect on mine. I have a Denon 7.1 system, and all the dialogue was in the front centre speaker only, and the sound effects were exactly as they should be, mainly front speakers with occasional sound in the rear, (explosions etc). So all seemed normal, and very good I have to add.

Mr Blue Sky. I have the uk one - with a white barcode. I applied for replacement and they have not yet sent one out. I was fed up waiting so watched it and didnt notice any dialogue issue other then Greirs gun shots being low in the mix (but this was duplicated on the included blu ray) but Dialogue was centered. The disc has a number on it that ends with "V2" I wonder is that code for version 2. Does your replacement have a v2 on it? Thanks in advance.

@@Purge00 I didn't get a replacement it never came. But when I tested the one Amazon sent, to my surprise it was perfect. I got the collectors edition, it has the white barcode, and yes the number on the disc does end with V2. In full it is EU151275ULBV2 So it looks like they've corrected the dialogue fault. Sounded great and it's definitely an improvement on the blu ray for picture quality.

it's nice for once the UK to get a limited edition collected edition with the Blu-ray poster postcards and 4K disk and you don't get it in the US 😂

I just bought it, never seen it before. I didn't think it was bad. I watched Escape From New York, and then Escape From LA back to back. They were about the same to me, even if this one didn't feel as crazy. I just kind of wish they would have delved a bit more into Snake Pliskin. Also he may get the job done, but...I always feel like he just stumbled around until something worked out. lol

I was born in 1985 and this was my generation's John Carpenter 'Escape' movie. Especially because I mustve watched it 100 times on HBO. AJ Langer in those thigh high boots and sexy outfits are still amazing. I didnt actually see Escape from NY (I live in NY too, lol) for the first time until the other day. I have both on DVD.

Yeah, Langer is great in this! I am only a year younger than you, but it took me a while to get around to this one the first time. It's definitely not a bad movie, though, and I think it gets more hate than it deserves. Thanks so much for watching!

I have never heard of this film, and it doesn't sound like something I would like at all, and I don't own a blueray or 4K player, BUT I did really enjoy this review! I like the structure and level of detail of your reviews, and your enthusiasm and honesty ^^

I watched Star Wars on Disney+ on my laptop which has a (non-4k) gorgeous expensive screen. I hated it. Their version they were streaming (4k or 1080p) made all the practical effects pop the same way youre describing happened for you when watching this movie. I watched Bram Stokers Dracula last year on Laserdisc and the practical effects made it look similar to a video of a play being put on live for an audience. It wasnt bad, I liked that actually, it being my first time seeing it. However having the picture in super bright, super high quality with something I love and cherish like Star Wars, was not appreciated, Disney. I saw 4k in my friends home when she picked up a $5,000 tv in 2014 that was 4k, and I was not impressed and did not enjoy it like I was expecting to. The soap opera effect was terrible and we couldnt turn it off. Ill pass on 4k, or wait until they sell for a couple bucks used. Ill buy a nice used tv before I get excited for 4k, especially with 8k already on the horizon and being sold in TV''s as "8k-ready". Honestly, 4k is just super bright 1080p in my humble opinion, and exactly like 3D Blurays, 4k just a gimmick to sell expensive dvds and take advantage of the guys who love audio/video stuff, physical media buffs, and guys who want the newest stuff or want better stuff than all his friends :) No hate, its a lot better now that you can turn the soap opera effect off on most 4k TVs. Whats do you think @Cinefessions?

Thanks for the comment! I'm actually a big fan - in general - of 4K. When the transfer is done right, it can look incredible. I've spent a decent amount on my setup, but nowhere near what some have. Even so, my Sony Bravia looks excellent with 4K content. Obviously it comes down to the disc themselves, and while this one didn't "wow" me, plenty others have. Godzilla (2014), for example, was an incredible upgrade from the BD in my opinion. I also loved Dredd in 4K (the sound was incredible, even with my relatively modest setup). That soap opera effect is the absolute worst, and is the very first thing that I turn off in the settings on any TV I sit down in front of. I cannot stand it! I really don't see 8K ever being a major consumer platform like 4K has become, but that is just my guess. I was actually also a big fan of 3D, haha! I still have a decently sized 3D Blu-ray collection. While I don't agree that 4K is a gimmick because the majority of the time the picture quality and/or audio upgrades have made the discs more than worth it to me, I definitely respect your opinion on it. It is absolutely not for everyone. And I have a gigantic DVD collection as well, so for me, the most important thing is access. I will get the same out of the story (for the most part) regardless of format, but if I don't have access, then I can't enjoy anything about it. Again, thanks for the comment, and for watching!
