Back when the schools were uphill in the snow both ways, remakes were something to look forward to. But then Escape From LA came along and gave us all a plate full of Blue Waffle PTSD STDs. Come with me while we examine the nightmare CGI, the straight-from-high school sets, and the defilement of Snake Plissken.
Every clip is used under Fair Use, and I highly recommend the viewer goes out and buys whatever film I happen to be reviewing.
Besides this one. Don't go out and buy Escape From LA. Don't even pirate it. Be kind to yourself and pretend it never existed. Like the latter season of Sliders, the world (and your psyche) would be better off if we all pretended it never existed.

This movie is misunderstood. It’s a satire not meant to be taken seriously.

I actually liked Escape From LA. True, the original is still better (and actually took itself seriously, which LA does not), but it has its moments. You can make an argument, really, that Escape from LA is kind of a parody of Escape From New York. Carpenter wanted to do a second sequel, which he tentatively titled Escape From Earth, but it never happened. Pity. Must say, however, that Stacy Keach is a poor substitute for the great Lee Van Cleef. I could take Van Cleef as a serious threat.

Ya, I preferred escape from LA better than New York. It felt more entertaining, more over the top. The story is very similar to New York, to the point where this feels not a sequel, but the final draft of the original. Yeah, the CG and sets look dated and fake, but so did New York.- and ya know with that said, maybe just maybe John carpenter was just trying to make a parody of the first film

Think for a moment about the movie Escape from LA. as a stand alone movie and forget Escape from NY for a moment .. (I've never seen the first one tbh).. It does not deserve such a bad review overall.. I love this movie .. very underrated. As long as you don't take it all too seriously of course... it's an entertaining film and very honest... It's in my top 30... And I have watched 100s / 1000’s of movies

escape from LA still makes no sense to me, escape from NY was iconic, and by the time of the sequel Carpenter was a legend, he could have easily got the funding needed to make a worthy sequel, yet he makes this joke of a movie, and i think joke is the best way to describe it, its not bad like they made mistakes, its bad like they went out of their way to make it stupid, i mean basketball?? its like they went out and made a movie just for people to make youtube videos making fun of it, like i said it makes no sense. what also makes no sense is why russell, who was huge, would agree to be in this.

My favorite remakes are John Carpenter's The Thing, the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (I also like Abel Ferrara's Body Snatchers) and David Cronenberg's The Fly. Maybe the word "remake" isn't entirely correct to describe these movies. They're basically entirely new versions of the story on which the original movie was based (all these movies are based on a literary source). The Robert Rodriguez movie The Faculty (1998) is kind of an unofficial remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
@rosettareviews6531
@rosettareviews6531 3 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty impeccable list. Yeah, 'remake' isn't exactly accurate, I struggled with proper verbiage myself for the video. I don't mind revisiting the classics if: There's something worth saying about the characters/universe that wasn't already covered & The source material is respected.

The comment you made about Invasion of the Body Snatchers and communism seems to have never been properly posted... Probably KZbin, I have had issues with Cinema Slayer Reviews and comments as well. I was hoping it would appear after a day or two, but no, only the partial post in my notification bar remains.

@@rosettareviews6531 Yeah, I said that the 50's version seems to be about the threat of communism and the 1978 version is more about alienation in a big modern city. I like to think of the 70's version as the sci fi/horror version of paranoid 70's thrillers like The Parallax View and Three days of the Condor. The 90's version, Body Snatchers (directed by Abel Ferrara), is set on a military base where people already behave impersonally and robotically anyway. That's how you can make an interesting remake, by offering a fresh perspective on a story that we already know.

@@wimvanderstraeten6521 Yes, you nailed it. The Twilight Zone remake of "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" is a shining example of this. A new take on an old story. Sadly, we all know the incentive is cash, and there is a ton of easy money to be made strip mining people's nostalgia centers. Sorry about the technical issue, thanks for taking the time to repost. Certainly was worth it from my end.

The movie wasn't great but there have been worse sequels. It's just that the first movie was so great in comparison. It was obvious what Snake would do at the end, but that scene alone was worth the price of admission.

i like both movies la & ny but ny is more darker & had more feel only thing i hated in the ny was that dance thing they did on stage i think that is out of place as for la well you can tell it was made cheap or something the old school new cgi at that time lol don't hold up but i do love the re mix of the theme & how it makes me think of metal gear & yes i know snake from the escape movies is the same one from the mgs games they have two things going for it the guy that knows creepy music & the best actor in movies.

you are 100% right when they start flying with the gliders when they get low or high it looks fake as shit LOL looks like they on a six flags kind of back lot & what is more funny you see the gliders come down about to land right but then go back in the air LOL to shoot more people this why ny is more real looking they shot it the state of mo mostly on part of the city was burnt out & no was was around make it look more creepy funny thing is you can walk around in a lot of them places where ny was made but i bet not in la most of it is fake shooting locations lol some where on a back lot & you all must under stand real life shoots cost more rl towns more money i think one part where the train station is in ny is now a mall if its still around

Sorry but I couldn't disagree more. This is one of John Carpenter's most underrated and misunderstood movies imo. I wouldn't even think of comparing it to those garbage Disney Star Wars films. The movie is supposed to be silly, absurd, over-the-top and self referential which is what separates it from the first film. You aren't exactly supposed to take the movie that seriously. Making the movie more of a parody was a brilliant move by Carpenter but most fans just didn't get it I guess

Disney Star Wars is brilliant compared to EFLA. EFLA is one of the WORST films OAT and a slap in the face to Carpenter's fans. Absolute garbage. Beyond garbage. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK was serious Cold War commentary. EFLA was Johnny Carpenter's drunken, washed-up ''FUCK YOU WORLD!''. Well, Fuck him too. One of the only films I ever walked out of after paying to see.

Even if he meant it to be meta and camp it still has to be entertaining and it wasn’t. Also looks cheap as hell. Even managed to screw up a Bruce Campbell cameo !! We all get to like what we like but at least admit it’s not a misunderstood gem. That’s just being pretentious.

A parody that doesn't come across as a parody? Yeah those have never worked... I don't think this is some meta thing, this was simple-minded, from whatI can tell... I'd like to say "I'll rewatch it and see if maybe it is a parody", but I had to watch it a couple years ago when I made this video. Another viewing so close will result in depression.
