4K Shooting: HK USP 10mm - two great tastes that taste great together

This is a project I have been working on for a bit, a USP 40S&W converted to shoot 10mm. So far, after 300 rounds of various brands of ammo, it has been virtually 100% reliable. (A couple bobbles early on but the last ~225 rounds have been perfect.) It's an excellent platform for the round, both accurate and reasonably soft. The protruding magazine isn't ideal and I'm going to try to make another that fits entirely inside the grip. The capacity is 13+1 in this configuration. AMMO THAT RUNS WELL (SO FAR):: Buffalo Bore 180gr JHP, HRS Bear Load 200gr, Sig Sauer 180gr, Remington UMC 180gr, Hornady XTP 155gr, Armscor 180gr, and PMC 200gr (had a few hang-ups with this one)..

the idea of a USP in 10mm gives me this conflicting feeling where I both want everyone to pay attention to my Ａｅｓｔｈｅｔｉｃｓ and also to be an invisible teutonic ninja.

I did that once with a Hi-Point. Worked surprisingly well. I like doing my stupid experiments with Hi-Points because if it goes boom, no one will care including me or my wallet, ha.

You shot a 10mm through a hi point with a zamak shitty pot metal slide? You either have Thors personal hi point or you’re lying for a rate of 1 like/year

@@tugarin2345 The zinc aluminum alloy might be junk metal, but they use a LOT of it. As I said, it works fine, though if I was too make it a long term firearm, I might want to consider a strife spring.

If HK came out with a 10mm now, we couldn't get one here in CA. I got a collection of magnificent 10s anyway. I did the next best thing I think and converted my fs USP 45 with an 18# recoil spring and shoot 450smc. It's near 10mm performance. FYI, the 450smc is a 45 super with a small magnum rifle primer.When I changed the recoil spring, I locked the slide back and removed thee c-retaining clip and did the same to re-install it. Still a pitn though, but doable.

Also, you should probably use a heavier hammer spring if you can find it (and not the heavier recoil spring)--heavier recoil spring delays unlocking but then batters the gun on return to battery...

You might be able to trim one of the skirted basepads designed for the STI 140mm/170mm magazine tubes to better match the frame.

what is the heaviest load you have shot through your usp 10mm?

I've shot a couple 200gr loads through it. The first 100 rounds I put through it were 200gr PMC, which had a couple (literally 2) stoppages, but otherwise everything has run perfectly. I have a running list of ammo I've tried in the description of the video. I mostly shoot Buffalo Bore 180gr lately.

+questtrinity The trouble with the barrel revolved around finding someone to ream it out. Doing it all over again (which I would do), I'd get an aftermarket barrel from the start. The problem was nobody had tools hard enough to ream out HK's factory barrel.

The magazine poking out is bothering me so much, but I definitely agree with your tastes. I probably will mold a mod for the magazine so it fits flush with the grip.

Nice! Those fricken STI mags are stupid expensive, well any 2011 mag is. The SPS mags, for the Pantera or Vista are a little less but still high dollar. If a guy could have them made up by ACT-MAG or Mecgar, etc and actually put a realistic price on them.... You would probably have trouble keeping them in stock. Profit by volume! This has me thinking..... wonder if I can ream my boring 24/7 Pro into a 10mm since all it currently does is collect dust, lol.

what length barrel is this. You said you bought an EFK Firedragon, but not sure which one I would need.

Just the normal full-size 4.25" barrel. I've heard they don't sell those anymore so you might need to get a 6" Match barrel and find an aftermarket Match weight.

+Aaron Smith With the 45, the extractor/breech face wouldn't work on the cartridge very well and would be a lot harder to modify. The only mildly challenging thing with converting a 40S&W is fixing up the magazine to work.

+LifeSizePotato That's what I was originally thinking would be a deal killer, added case length in the grip. I remember 10 or so years ago when guys were modifying their Mauser M2s to 10mm.

+Aaron Smith The STI mag (a couple others, too) fits 10mm rounds perfectly, and also fits conveniently into the USP 40's grip, like it was meant to be. All you have to do to make it work in the HK is mill out a slot for the mag catch and mess with the follower a bit.
