I love how women are presented in this sequence as competent, intelligent and professional without the need for the narrative to demean, belittle or tear down any of the male characters. This was 50 years ago, and still seems to far outshine things made today. For instance, Leia is presented with a sarcastic yet fair question by a male colleague during a strategic briefing. Without belittling an officer, Leia seems to instinctively understand that an incorrect answer would be to demean him and lower morale by retorting. Instead, she shows real leadership by simply continuing the briefing while answering his question, which means she's asserting her authority by not outright arguing with the pilot, not interrupting her own briefing during a situation where little time is available and also answering his question all at the same time. The male officer's question is based on logic, as in "Okay, I'm following you, but our plan presents this issue." - He's looking out for the safety of his pilot colleagues by raising a huge issue with Leia's plan because he doesn't know that she's already about to lay out a solution. You can also throw in that he probably has pre-battle nerves and that perhaps the sarcastic attitude is his way of dealing with it, or perhaps this is the way he is used to talking to colleagues of the same rank. Also note that Leia is new to this specific leadership role, and so probably has yet to prove her capability which is why he's questioning her. A pilot doesn't deal with rubbish because it's life or death, and moreover, the life/death of the Alliance if they succeed/fail, so he's rather blunt about it. They all accept her plan as presented when she shows that it is logical and sound. The pilot tested her authority by confronting her and she then asserted it. She knows they share the same goal and that the safety of their colleagues is extremely important to both of them. There is also the female officer located at the Ion Canon control station, shown to be coordinating with the others at shield control, which is a very senior position. She's presented as a very focused person. She understands that lives are at risk and so she is completely focused on her task so that everyone can evacuate the base safely. She almost never takes her eyes off of her planetary display panel because she knows that people are depending on her timing for the best results. Leia also stands at the ready, in the leadership position while observing the status of the evacuation but also not micro-managing her officers, trusting them enough to seemingly only need to step in to provide more focus and guidance. She also demands that they get to safety as soon as their jobs are done, risking her own life in the process and only leaving when Han Solo physically pulls her away from the control room to her own safety. They have a leader, but work collectively as a team while trusting each other's intelligence. The presence of women in roles demanding competence and leadership is shown to be incidental. They don't have to prove anything about why they are there as they are simply the best people for those roles. As a result, the viewer also trusts them and the philosophy is proven to be a correct one once they succeed. You can extrapolate all of this complexity from only a few short scenes. This was 50 years ago guys. We did it right at that point and we can do it again if we actually try.

@@TheWorldsprayer that's a fair point, although I would have expected Leia to be taught the concept of The Force by her adoptive parents, as they were very much supporters of the Jedi Order and what it represented. And General Dodonna 100% said it at the end of his briefing on Yavin 4 before the attack on DS1, and Leia was present at that briefing.

*shrug* who knows the reason why? We're reading an awful lot into a scene that may/maynot have been well planned out.

@@TheWorldsprayer the movie was so well made overall, it's surprising, that's all.

I miss rebels long fighting sequences in land and space, I really would love to see a modern movie with more rebel ground battles in other planets like Hoth, Scarif or Endor but longer and greater space battles like Endor space or Scarif

2:50 - why do the aircrafts have to fly so close to the AT-AT? don't they have laser guns that can fire uhm at least 10 miles? and laser is light which spreads out linear?! so to all the great pilots of the Rebellion: Fly far away and attack from there... or sorry, the AT-AT armor is too strong for the blasters... my bad!

Pretty sure this is an updated version of the movie cause I remember Dak just getting zapped by the speeder itself. If this is a recent version it definitely fits better that he got blasted instead of just dying outta nowhere.

Why would they "keep tight". Makes it easier for the AT-ATs to shoot them down i think.

Maybe it’s just audio degradation over time, but the audio in this version sounds so much better in the newer DVD, Blu-ray, or Disney versions. They’re less clean but more gritty and real sounding.
