4K UHD (2160p) and Full HD (1080p) are the two most common display resolutions across the world of TV and home theater. As more people upgrade their TVs and start buying 4K Blu-ray Discs or streaming in 4K, it’s important to understand the technology you are upgrading to.
So what’s the difference? What are the benefits to 4K over HD? Where will you see the biggest upgrade? What types of hardware do you need? Let’s talk about it in this video breaking down the key differences with 4K UHD vs HD video.

I only upgrade to 4k if they come with director or unrated cuts. I can't stand when they stick with theatrical cuts and refuse to even do seamless branching with a menu option, just because seeing that option actually makes film purists upset. I don't go to movie theaters, so I don't care about watching what version was shown to me then and there for some sort of memory connection of having gone to see it. I want what version the director wanted to make but weren't allowed to show.

I tend to do this as well. A while back I needed to downsize so donated few hundred DVDs and now find there's certain films not seen in a while and they come out on 4k, but they have to be all time classics to spend the kind of price charged. I've a pretty big bluray collection and other than maybe stuff I'd consider top 10, I don't do a 4k rebuy. Mainly cos I most like upgraded from DVD to blu! I have two 55inch TVs now - one Sony LED and one newest Samsung OLED, and honestly I wonder at that size do I even get the benefit of 4K. Hard to know. What I will say is the sound is unbelievable on 4K through my old 5.1 set up with really big old Jami speakers and a receiver. I've noticed on the Samsung OLED that Disney plus looks dark as hell so that's been annoying, but the discs shine. Tho funnily I've been watching some old DVDs on the Sony (presumably upscaled by the PS5) and they look great. Like old movies from the 40s etc. So who knows. A lot of it is genuinely FOMO, but if it makes you happy then worse things you could spend money on.

It is also important to remember that a film being on a 4K disc does NOT *automatically* ALWAYS make it super sharp or even necessarily better-looking than the Blu Ray. It also depends on the quality of the TRANSFER that was put onto the 4K disc. A notorious example is Terminator 2 4K. The transfer on the 4K disc is so DNR'd and smoothed over that many people feel that the older Blu Ray actually looks SHARPER and better because the quality of the 4K transfer is so poor! That's why things like reviews and screenshots and such of 4K discs can be helpful in determining if that particular 4K disc is likely to look significantly better than the Blu Ray or not before making the purchase.
@steved5880
@steved5880 Ай бұрын
That’s literally like the only example of a Blu looking better than the 4K. And screenshots are actually a very poor comparison btwn Blu and 4k because the biggest upgrade is the effect HDR has on dynamic range and color grade - both of which we absolutely cannot see on our little SDR iPhones and hyper compressed SDR KZbin videos.
@SamLovesMovies25
@SamLovesMovies25 Ай бұрын
@@steved5880 Yeah of course you won't be able to see HDR properly from screenshots, but it gives SOME sort of an idea about the product before purchasing

HD blu-rays don't have HDR because it wasn't a protocol when blu-ray was being developed. Consumer HD was also SDR because TV contrast ranges were 8bit, and the video is encoded in a less efficient video codec (that takes up more of the disc compared to UHD). There were movie studios editing 2K digital intermediates in HDR spaces (as digital cameras can record RAW video in spaces that exceed current consumer HDR). This can be important for editing contrast ranges in the video. 4K UHD discs also needed a new video codec because the master file size is much larger, so there has to be more file compression for a UHD blu-ray. 4K is 4x the resolution, but a tonal range that changes from 8bit 256 shades of tone to 10bit 1024 shades (not just providing brighter highlights or darker shadows, but smoother gradients). Perceptual detail of video isn't just resolution: it's resolution, contrast range, and lens focus (and possible other optical characteristics). You will see new HD blu-rays have Dolby Atmos tracks (which weren't originally part of HD video protocols), as many new movies are mastered in it and older blu-ray players will see the track as True-HD 7.1. I had a pretty nice Panasonic plasma TV and 7.1 HDMI speaker system when I was collecting blu-rays. To go to 4K, I invested in a nice OLED TV, upgraded my amplifier to decode Atmos/ DTS:X/Auro-3D, and got 4 height speakers. I believe HDR and 3D audio is the real advantage of 4K. I go to the cinema less often as I prefer my home audio, and I've calibrated Dolby Vision and HDR10 with my OLED.

So these days, if it's a movie that I know I will *one day* be glad to have in HDR 4K, I go for those combos. Anything by Chris Nolan, or George Miller will be worth it in the long run. And as per Jeff's advice, I also keep a lookout for 4K restorations of classics and B+W films, as they really benefit from the HDR.

For me, 1080p Blu-ray, especially if you find a good used source, is the perfect mix of affordability and truly excellent picture and sound. I can get 4-5 standard Blu-rays for the price of one new 4k, and for the most part they still look and sound phenomenal on home theater equipment, with some even having Dolby Atmos, etc. I buy some iconic or legendary movies on 4k, but for me Blu-ray will likely satisfy my home theater needs forever.

I really only will be upgrading a select amount of films. Having over 19K films now, my 4K collection is still relatively small at less than 300 of this 19K movies. Blu Ray is in it’s sweet spot for me. Cost, still looks great on all my TVs. And only do I really care about 4K for my projector theatre room. It's not as clearcut as this. Regular Blu-ray players can't do HDR. I'm not sure they can read triple layer discs either and that might be required because of the extra space the color information might require. So while techically doable it would just create too much confusion imo.
@dsr0116

@@Reissuleipa It’s not doable because HDR was not a consumer video standard when blu-ray was introduced. Older players can read triple layer discs (there are some HD blu-ray 75GB: for long movies with special features). The main reason new HD blu-rays can’t have HDR is that it’s a newer standard (encoded in a different format), that non UHD players can’t decode.

HDR colour can be great - but TV panels can also vary - some older ones are 8Bit or 8bit +2 With newer panels 10bit colour ie. they better able to display that 'true' colour range & colour volume. But I think your point about viewing distance is often overlooked. For my 55in UHD 4K OLED TV I sit just 6 to 7 feet away. UK home hav (in general) smaller TVs but in smaller living rooms

What I did notice was that the sound came through with much more force over my modest Atmos surround system. I thought it was a 4K feature but, as you point out, I guess it has more to do with file size. I guess there are 1080p discs out there, too, with robust sound? I only own 2 4K discs (one was accidentally included with a Blu day the other was a bargain find of Alien sealed in a charity shop for £5. It just so happens to be my favourite film and one of the few I would triple dip on!) That said, from a gaming point of view the colour difference between 1080p and 4K is impressive. Considering that the furthest I can actually sit from the screen is maybe 7 to 8 feet it seems that there isn't much point getting a much bigger screen, as it seems 4K wouldn't be a massive improvement over 1080p on anything g less than a 55'' screen.

Thanks Jeff for the info. I've recently gone down the rabbit hole of using RTX HDR upscaling on my HTPC (Home Theater PC) for below 4K content and the results have been amazing. Nvidia is utilizing the tech in their new Geforce RTX graphics cards to AI enhance video (and games) on the fly. On casually viewing comparing native 4K HDR with RTX HDR upscaled 1080p content on a 65 inch HDR TV is nearly unnoticeable. However, native 4K HDR is better as the color grading is (theoretically) being performed by a human with artistic(?) intent. It works with streaming, digital downloads, and (with all those PC hoop jumping prerequisites) blu-ray/DVD. Linus Tech Tips did a dive video into this a few months ago when the Nvidia driver updates dropped.

I tried an experiment yesterday with dvd, Blu ray and 4K of the same film on my 4K tv through Xbox Series X. The dvd was ok, the Blu ray a massive improvement, but the 4K didn’t end up looking massively better than the Blu ray. As my TV is 42’’ this seemed to confirm that to get a serious improvement in picture quality (akin to what I saw was the difference between dvd and Blu ray) a much larger tv must be needed. For my set up 4K was not a significant leap enough to justify the extra cost. After that just for a laugh I played the same film side by side on the 4K tv with the UHD disc and the older DVD through my 28’’ widescreen CRT I use for retro games. Obviously the 4K was the better picture but it was extremely surprising to see just how good the image of the DVD was on the CRT side by side. Clearly DVDs, whilst they don’t look brilliant blown up and upscaled on a modern screen, just like many retro consoles with the correct cables, they can look fantastic on a screen they were originally designed for.

I've only got a 43" LED TV and sit around 3ft away so picture isn't actually primary for me. Larger sets of 55" and greater especially ULED are not in my likely or foreseeable future. So for me it's more about Atmos. I've got a soundbar and surrounds which does a job for now and which I'm more likely to upgrade to separates before a TV. I've bought a bunch of 1080p Blu-rays recently that have Atmos, some second hand. I'm mostly upgrading DVD to 4K. The one annoyance is that Atmos is only available on 4K in many circumstances so that means some Blu-ray I may need to upgrade.

One point that I think needs to be touched on is the type of displays people are watching 4k content on. A lot of people have edge lit 4k panels which don’t do much justice to HDR content. I feel at a minimum a full array local dimming display is needed to get the benefit of 4k HDR content.

Going back to data sizing on 4K discs...it is a concern when you have a much earlier 4K player. I purchased mine in 2018 and when the file sizes reach about 66 - 100 GB, then the disc would skip and cause frame glitching. It's changed now with updated players but in case anyone else has that issue with their earlier players, that's the cause of that.

So just to add my 2 cents. I have a 50in plasma with a 4k player that downscales it to 1080p. Even though I don't get HDR the remastered 4k look great of older movies. I can also notice a difference in newer movies to. I compared Sonic 2 with the blu-ray vs the 4k and the 4k was better but not by a a lot being as its a newer movie. The color looked better on Sonic and other detail to. Also Just got in my Rango 4k steel book and watched it. Looked great. Even though Rango CGI was always amazing for its time and still is now.

I feel the quality of your 4K TV also plays a big factor into if you can see a big difference with 4K content. I currently have a very cheap 50 inch Samsung 4K tv in my bedroom and hdr content is horrible due to not having enough nits to display hdr properly, so I really only notice a sharpness difference at this point. That’s why later this year I plan on upgrading to a 55 inch Oled TV.

I would recommend going 65" providing it fits comfortably in the room and you have the appropriate viewing angle and distance. I have a 55" Sony OLED which is a great TV and a great size for my room but I only got it because it's the maximum size that would fit in my room. 65" (and onwards) is more of an ideal cinematic size whereas 55" is more "good enough" if that makes sense. When it comes to 4K TVs, particularly higher end displays like OLED bigger is better.

The term high dynamic range means there is a large amount of variation in light levels within a scene or an image. The dynamic range refers to the range of luminosity between the brightest area and the darkest area of that scene or image. Expanded color space is part of that, but we have to remember that HDR improves the visible space between shadows and intense bright objects, giving far more detail and depth to an image. Look at Game of Thrones as a perfect example. HDR grading and the increased bit rate made episodes actually watchable, whereas compressed or other formats like Bluray did not. Remember first generation 4K panels didn't have HDR capabilities at all, which I'm sure glad they added that function sooner than later.

4K disc for home video is very likely the LAST home video format. As sad as that is, it is where we are. The market is just too small and split to make and sense financially for studios to give us consumer 8K discs. My understanding is there is already 8K and even potentially 16K discs. But for archival type stuff for studios and companies. Things we will never see as consumers unfortunately. It is the same as 8K and 16K TVs. We already see them available. In fact 8K TVs have been for some time. But I don't see any need for them, literally for a decade or more right now. For multiple reasons. As someone who works in film, there is already available 6K, 8K and I hear even 16K cameras. Costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. But again, these are for things like huge Hollywood companies. Plus, on small TVs, we won't even be able to see things like 8K or 16k. The pixels at that point are too small unless you have a massive screen. I have a true 4K projector. And besides the HDR support, I wasn't that impressed by the difference between my 1080p projector and 4K. Even on like an 8-10 foot screen. It just doesn't make sense at home for these crazy resolutions. 🤷

@@cheekster777 I just found this, “Wide color gamut, or WCG, is often lumped in with HDR. While they're often found together, they're not intrinsically linked. Where HDR is an increase in the dynamic range of the picture (with brighter highlights in particular), WCG is an increase in color: "Redder" reds, "greener" greens, "bluer" blues and more. Both provide more of an impact on-screen than the resolution increase from high-def to 4K, but in different ways.”
@timramich

10 bits is the wider gamut. HDR is about brighter things. Figure 255:255:255 is white. HDR can go above 255 to add luminance. And it can do it on all 3 color channels. Only downside is that you lose fidelity in the color gamut, and you're back to dealing with banding issues. They should have made 12 bits mandatory for HDR. Most films really should be sticking with SDR to get a better color instead of going with HDR for the marketing nonsense. Tell me why something like It's a Wonderful Life needs to be in HDR.
