I live very close to a RR track and one time when I first bought my house my father was over here talking to the furnace guys and all of a sudden we heard at steam locomotive - we both ran outside because I personally have never seen one before and this thing went right by blowing it's horn and spewing the steam - I thought for a second that it was some kind of time warp or something (ha, ha) but I think there was an event maybe at the Indianapolis Fair Grounds and this train was headed there. But it took out breath away for a few seconds it was so beautiful.

As both a truck driver and train fan, I felt kinda sorry for the truck and it's driver. That steam whistle probably scared the hell out of the driver if they weren't expecting it. It also probably made the truck feel a bit inadequate with just its little air horns! I still say that they should sell Big Boys steam whistle sound as a ringtone!

I was there too for the 1st leg (Evanston to Ogden) and you covered it perfectly. I've been viewing almost every video that comes out on KZbin of the 4014 (and train), and yours is the best so far. Congratulations, excellent job, well done. We certainly must congratulate the Union Pacific Railroad, Ed Dickens and the steam crew for an outstanding job they performed on the 4014 too. A real class-act for the best class-1 railroad.

At the end of the video, you thank us for watching! Uh-uh. Thank YOU for showing. I saw a schedule and the 4-8-8-4 will be in Luling, Texas on November 4. So will I. Two comments if I might. I am impressed at how clean -- almost invisible -- the exhaust from the stack is. I always thought steam locomotives put out lots of smoke. Second, why is there a 4-8-4 behind the Big Boy?
@royalhudsonrailvideos5 жыл бұрын
I’m glad I can please so many people by sharing my adventures such as this one! Also that’s awesome you were also able to see the #4014 in Texas. The smoke stack is relatively clean as they just refurbished it and the unit now burns oil which is somewhat cleaner to burn. The #844 was also involved since the timing didn’t work out to run them separately headed west, but the double header coming east was planned.

His vids are great because he does not patronize at all and tells it straight. As a Brit. it is what I like best about American culture. Very refreshing. As for these two locos, they are surely the best surviving articulated and the best surviving Hudson. Steam does not get any better.

couple of questions, are the 2nd yellow tenders oil tanks needed due to the oil conversions? and the 3rd last car has what seems to be a power unit on the roof, does it not have enough output to eliminate the diesel loco? if its not a power unit what is it?
@royalhudsonrailvideos5 жыл бұрын
The extra water tenders are intended to house extra water for longer excursions. They feed into the locomotives. As for the third to last car, that car should be a generator to provide power to the rest of the business cars, while the locomotive is there to provide dynamic braking for the steam locomotives and an extra boost if needed.

Some nice shots there. Could anybody tell me; now that she is an oil burner, do the Americans “tube out”, In New Zealand, that is the practice of dropping the reverser right out, give her a fair amount of throttle, then drop a bucket of sand through a large funnel into the firebox. The purpose is to sand blast the tubes to clean them out of any oil soot and achieve better steaming. If you are in the right place at the right time, it is an amazing sight to see. It seems to me that doing that on a Big Boy would be incredible.

@@royalhudsonrailvideos the issue here on the east coast especially in NJ, their concern is with insurance. You know someone has to make out for an event. We use to have a steam train come through for the holiday (toys for tots) and fall foliage seasons. But they put a "damper" on it. You should have seen the crowd gather for these steam events. Whoever makes these decisions has backwards thinking. This is part of our American Heritage.

@royalhudsonrailvideos5 жыл бұрын
The 844 originally wasn't supposed to be with the train, it was added to be a double header within weeks of the trip. Thanks UP from the great white north! You guys rock! Now, if only the Canadian Pacific could follow your example of true resolve! So, watching the big boy videos, and reading the comments. A common comment would come up often: “never in my lifetime would I ever think to see a big boy running the rails once again!” I tip my hat to the hard working steam crew of the Union Pacific. So, I say this with great sadness, never in my lifetime would I ever see a Selkirk locomotive running. Too young to have ever seen them before, and sadly, probably would never see one run at all. Keith, do you hear the subtle point I am trying to make? Well, do ya? Where’s the 2816? Oh, hear she is: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIjGe316oreXq8U Never in my lifetime do I feel I would ever see the beautiful Canadian Pacific 2816 run ever and ever again.................
@royalhudsonrailvideos5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It is awesome UP takes the time and money to make things like this happen. Hopefully other railroads like CP may eventually follow the lead and create similar programs of their own!
@dmbpify5 жыл бұрын
CP did have a steam program, Hunter Harrison destroyed it! Hopefully Keith will get his head out of the sand and start it up again. Rumors were they tried for Canada 150 back in 2017, but with the morel destruction Hunter did to the formal steam program employees, they couldn’t get the fire lit (no pun intended). So, CP used its vintage diseaseals to pull the 150 celebration train. From 2001 to 2010, I saw my first steam locomotive in person running mainline track speeds and was in awe! Saw and rode the royal Hudson back in her BC rail days, but she never got to stretch her legs. That’s another steam loco sitting in a museum thanks to Gordo selling BC rail to CN! The excuse of a money losing endeavor doesn’t work for me giving that tourism, the endless cruise lines to port in Vancouver, and the world attention Vancouver has received the past 20 years. Imagine a 2860/2816 double header with a restored 5935 joining them through Rogers pass. But I digress, never in my lifetime..........

5.7 million homes in the United States use the same oil to heat their homes. Are two steam engines really going to make a difference give me an effing break!

Ok, lets get rid of gas companies, lets get rid of all petrol run cars, lets get rid of the heat that runs through your home, and while were at it, lets call oil a mass murderer

How about all the coal fired power plants? I think they're producing much more carbon than two steam engines that run two or three times a year lol

I walk , bicycle or use public transportation nearly everywhere I go, thanks for asking. I am actively using solar panels and practice energy conservation. As for putting this 4000 class locomotive back in operation...bad idea. It's an air polluting monster that serves no purpose other than you dinosaurs think it looks cool. You don't own the atmosphere and the rest of us shouldn't be forced to breathe polluted air.
