Outstanding video Jacob!! Love the shots, on the hill, mountains, and the pacing shots were the best! Not to mention the drone shots. I would’ve got but I decided to see it on tour. If something like this happens again though, I will go see it.

@My Opinion I remember seeing the 844 having a diesel with it a few times and that was Union Pacific's last steam locomotive. Can the Big Boy work by itself? Absolutely! But wouldn't you mind riding a train hauled by both the largest steam locomotive and the largest diesel locomotive?

LOVE the pacing footage! Nice to see you include #844 too. She’s HUGE - not that much shorter than #4014! Hey is that a State flag on her front left? Wyoming? This is totally one of my fave vids from all I’ve seen on the whole Cheyenne / Ogden return trip. You’ve really captured great moments & besides some great shots, you’ve captured a great vibe too (like the Mum w her girls waving & cheering at 6:43 Nice work and thanks from all of us who love these engines but couldn’t be there!!

The steam locomotives don't seem to be smoking much in these shots--is the diesel doing all the work?
@centralcaliforniarail5 жыл бұрын
No, the diesel is only there to provide dynamic braking and power for the passenger cars. They weren’t smoking as much because they burn oil, as opposed to coal

Does anyone know why each loco has an extra tender? It is not historical, and I cannot think of a reason...
@bigkiwimike5 жыл бұрын
Hi. It would be for extra water. Even though these locos have very big tenders, I’m sure they will be like any other type of steam loco I know of and you will always run out of water before you run out of fuel or coal. So to have less stops for water, you simply take it with you.
@hatsjie25 жыл бұрын
@@bigkiwimike Thanks for the answer! Historically however they did not have those extra tenders, and I don't think they use significantly more water than in those days. Maybe it is because all the water towers are gone ;-)
@centralcaliforniarail5 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly right! The second tenders are for extra water.
@huemanatie43925 жыл бұрын

There is the HEP on the tail of the train. Poor guy in that diesel has nothing to do except look at the trees go by
@centralcaliforniarail5 жыл бұрын
Odd that the head-end power car is at the rear lol. I was listening to a scanner during the trip, and the diesel was doing some dynamic braking during the downhill run to Evanston
@franciscoleonardo1515 жыл бұрын
@@centralcaliforniarail ... Yes I hard the dynamic braking also. I was referring to the HEP second or third car from the end, I say this from the black on the roof of the HEP car
@markdombek25515 жыл бұрын
Francisco Leonardo: . . HEP (Head End Power) is also supplied by Power Car #209, the 'Howard Fogg', which is the 2nd coupled car behind the #2650 ET44 diesel assist.
@franciscoleonardo1515 жыл бұрын
@@markdombek2551 I know that dynamo is used on the diesel locomotive since there is so much steam power and I can hear the HEP operating about the second or third car from the end. Won't guarantee it unless I was standing right there. I am not a total rail fan since I started a railroad. The freight has dried up and the new owners have done a great job in drumming up tourist in ex coal mining area. My position is/was Chief Mechanical Officer.
@markdombek25515 жыл бұрын
Francisco Leonardo: That must have been interesting work. You likely have many good stories from those times.

How fast did they run the BigBoy?

Love the video! But I gotta say something about the drone shots at the end. It makes me a little nervous that your flying a drone over a large crowd of people. What would happen if the drone lost signal, the battery died or some moron threw something at it? It would crash most likely hurting someone on the ground. Next time you fly somewhere with lots of people, please make sure that you won’t put anyone one at risk by flying your drone. I don’t want to be that one guy in the comment section but I’d hate for you to get in trouble or for someone to get hurt.
@centralcaliforniarail5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As for the drone, I truly do understand your concern. I can assure you that while this video was filmed, the drone was operated in a safe manner. Additionally, the particular drone I have, the DJI Mavic Pro, is equipped with multiple safety features, including obstacle avoidance and a "Return to Home" feature, which initiates if the battery falls below a certain level or the drone loses signal with the controller. Thank you for your concern
