This is one of my favorite episodes. The different angles they shot in season 6 and 7 as computer animation was used more that season. STV 💜💜

I've been upscaling Voyager with open source tools ever since the RealESRGAN paper came out; this is better output than anything I've been able to produce so far. It's impressive (and unfortunate that the tools used aren't open, but cest la vie). Keep at it my friend. Voyager is the best Trek. When this aired on telly in Australia I literally spat my tea upon seeing Morello. I was a huge Rage fan and couldn't believe my eyes 👀

What a great episode.

Image per image the difference is amazing. But when you run it, those crisp images come up as jumpy and disjointed. I prefer the old one. The slight blur is not a problem compared to the lack of flow of the remastered version. Just my opinion!

I think that was actually a result of the export method, this next upload comparing the models looks a lot smoother

Yeah the lumpiness is distracting. But I’m sure that can be fixed. What is impressive here is that the upscale doesn’t look horribly fake when you evaluate it just as a frame. It’s gotten so good that I am impressed. I’ve always written off upscaling techniques. Though I hope this doesn’t detract studios from doing proper 4/8k scans of their old material.

480p to 4k is a big jump the TNG remaster is good maybe oneday they will do the same with the others
@kewlztertc53868 ай бұрын
I heard they can't. TNG was shot with film, voyager wasn't. At lest that's my understanding.
@trudyandgeorge3 ай бұрын
Yeah it's unfortunate. Voyager was a straight to VHS production, and so the DVD is the best source material available. With TNG they went back to the film and used some tech called a telecine (I think it's called) to capture it in 4K.

The denoising on the upscaled version is too aggressive, it leaves the image looking far too smooth to seem real. A lot of the faces end up looking too clean and perfect. I do honestly prefer the original 480p video for this reason. It does a great job of cleaning up the rest of the image, but given your focus is going to be on the people most of the time, it's just not worth it to me. But it's a good tech demo at the very least.

it definitely has some more work to do. but pretty cool how this all works.

Seems a bit stuttery, no?

The ship flyby looked a little jumpy, but the character scenes looked fine to me.
@SweetSweetCandyBoyz9 ай бұрын
I’m going to upload this scene with an AI model comparison, maybe that’ll smooth it out.

some ship graphics were a bit jumpy at times in the original - you could also tell they struggled with the model to computer model animations too. Just awesome to see Voyager in high quality.

Creepy and cartoony. That's why I won't buy a TV with upscaling.
