Dragon Ball Z Kai briefly aired on 4Kids' Saturday morning block, Toonzai. Despite its short run, it had a huge impact on DBZ Kai's perception in the west. Let MugiMallard explain why people got so easily misinformed and hopefully clear up misconceptions.

The art style drew me in and I later got into the story of the series through the original manga using it as a guide and influence but also as a form of storytelling I can read and respect

While 4Kids had a bunch of censorships and people mostly remember DBZ Kai from 4Kids, Nicktoons or 4Kids, there is one thing we can all agree on... Kai was revolutionary and brought a truckload of fans to Dragon Ball.

It’s a shame many people dismiss Kai for the reasons you listed here. Funny enough, years after the Toonzai/Vortexx airings, the uncut dub WOULD be available on the Adult Swim Toonami Block but by then the damage had been done with its reputation. I grew up on the original airing on Toonami but I guess I’m mature enough to review it in hindsight and appreciate the fixed version. Then again, it may be because I grew up also on 4Kids dubbed anime like One Piece and could appreciate it when the uncut versions would become available and more accessible.

Ok I knew about the Nicktoons release of DBZ Kai, but I had no idea 4kids had it's own release. Reminds me of when I saw One Piece on CN and the 4kids block at the same time in the early 2000's.

What’s funny is when DBZ aired in syndication back in the 90’s, both the halos and Mr. Popo’s original skin color were left intact.

My first exposer to Dragon Ball was Dragon Ball Z, at first I wasn't a fan of it but by the time when Toonami aired the Original Dragon Ball I felt it was a good time to get into the series, however when Dragon Ball Z Kai got dubbed it came at a bad time because I dipped out of it thanks to Dragon Ball Evolution and how that ruined the series and the fact that Cartoon Network cancelled Toonami. when 4kids started to air DBZ Kai on CW I was more pissed off (I was a Teenager at the time and that Dragon Ball Evolution ruined Dragon Ball) being that My childhood got ruined and I hated of DBZ Kai thanks to 4kids, however all hope was not lost, when Toonami came back I had hopes that We'd get Dragon Ball Z Kai on the block and Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods got me back into the series and We'd got Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters. While I still prefer Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super in English (I'm very nostalgia bias to the Funimation now Crunchyroll dub of the shows, yeah DB and DBZ's dubs aged mostly they had to go with script from Ocean Productions) but I'd agree Dragon Ball Z Kai is better than Dragon Ball Z dubbed, if someone says they want to get into Dragon Ball Z, I'll direct them to Dragon Ball Z Kai in English as it's more close to the Manga.

There is actually a character named Commander Black and he appeared in Dragon Ball. I think they stopped showing him because of the blsackface thing.

I thought they only stopped showing him because he fucking died💀 wasn’t he the red ribbon arm guy that shot his extremely short commander, he tried to fight goku but failed horribly 😭

I actually think the Nicktoons edit of Kai was pretty tastefully done; things were toned down, but the story was still fully intact. As for the 4kids version, though many of the visual edits were incredibly silly, I still think that it's a solid version thanks to the script and music still being there. Yeah, Spirit Blast (not Ball, Spirit Ball has been the dub name for Yamcha's Sokidan since the old days) and Galick Blast were dumb, and Schemmel having to voice match Sabat and Strait for certain toned down lines was funny. But I'd still rather show that version to a kid than any of the original Z dubs with their constant changes to Toriyama's writing and characters. It's just a kid friendly version of what is still very much a faithful depiction of Toriyama's story. Of course, the Uncut version is still the best choice for older audiences.

I agree with you. I think the Kai dub in general is a punching bag in the English fandom, especially by those who grew up with the original Z dub. I think Funimation got better as time went on, and the best way to watch DBZ in English is Kai. The Nicktoons edit felt perfectly watchable IMO. By the way, it's great to see you again after all these years, dude. I still have fond memories of voicing kid Trunks in your Yo! Son Goku & His Friends Return fandub from way back when lol.

Yeah, I can't believe we released that dub over a decade ago now. How time flies lol. I'm glad you're still going strong with content creation. Definitely subbing to the new channel!
