It takes years & passion. Now my son is driving & his truck has a 4l60e and its slippin in 1st & wont reverse. Sadly my Dad passed away in January 2022 so we dont have anyone to rebuild it. I hope your video will encourage my son to maybe pick up his Papaws hobby & try to rebuild his transmission. Thank you sir. I know the hard work that goes into rebuilding a transmission. I wouldnt really consider rebuilding an automatic trans a DIY project. But it can be done if you have a manual or a really good video like this and lots of patients. And dont think you'll do it in 2-3 hrs, maybe a weekend. Ive rebuilt thousands of automatics in my 30 yrs of auto-tech, and it still takes me around 3 hrs for this model and this is an easier one to rebuild. not including coffee and pee breaks. Definitely something you want to do right the first time around because it really sucks putting it all together and installed to find out something was wrong and needs taken apart again.

Hiram... I can't tell you how ecstatic I am about this video. I generally do a lot of my minor mechanical work such as oil changes, battery replacement, alternator, water pumps, serpentine belt, throttle, radiator, brakes and rotors etc.... However just last night I thought pretty soon I may have to do something about my transmission and having a limited income I always have to find the cheapest but most reliable route to get the job done. So I decided to look on KZbin as I always do and search the internet to see what route I'd take. Lo and behold here you posted a video only days ago that support my future need. I have a 2003 Escalade EXT. I love working on my truck 1. Because I save a lot of money 2. Because I make sure it's done right 3. I have no one to blame or be mad at if it isn't 4 The shop mechanics can't beat me...lol. Anyway as I plan to embark on this journey to my first transmission drop and rebuild (which may take some months, I think I still have a significant amount of time but I'm still planning) I've run into a bit of a roadblock in my preparations. The transmission model is't engraved on the case. So I did some research and I think it's a 4l65e but need to be sure because once I drop that bad boy I won't be able to run back and forth to the auto store without inconveniencing others and I hate to do that. anyway I did find a number on the transmission that helps identify my transmission on the bottom at the end of the pan. The number is 3KZD4 042A 35523509. Also do I need to replace the torque converter and the transfer case, after all I have a bit over 202000 miles. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your skill for those of us that need the help...... If you or anyone else can answer these questions I would greatly appreciate it. As a DIY mechanic I started working on auto engine rebuilds at around 12 y/o learning from my dad. Years later I bought a used ‘68 Camaro 327 CID that needed an engine rebuild and I decided to also try rebuilding the simple 2 speed powerglide automatic transmission....what an eye-opener!! It took me 5 times as long to rebuild the transmission as the engine, but I did manage to figure it out. Years later I decided to try converting a 3 speed manual Mustang 289 to an automatic, by buying a junkyard Ford C4 transmission, bench rebuilding it and installing it. It was 3x more complex than the powerglide, but it was all mechanical and I managed to figured it out and install it. It was still working perfectly 100,000 miles later when I sold it. Many years later I restored an ‘85 Firebird Trans Am to all mechanical specs despite it having a 700R4 ECM-assisted transmission, which was way over my head. A local tranny shop friend bench rebuilt it for me, removed all the internal electronics and installed a mechanical shift kit which to this day still works perfectly. Now I have a ‘99 Tahoe with the older version 4L60e similar to the one you just rebuilt. Despite a hard 1-2 upshift (from brand new), the tranny is still perfect (only 63,000 miles on it). While I’m too damn old (75) to undertake another transmission rebuild given the incredible complexity of these incredible computerized transmissions, guys like you make old fart DIY mechanics like me wish I was young enough to give it another go. Beautiful job, superb knowledge base, and excellent videography.....I savored every minute! Dr. K.

I was looking into this as a viable option to start rebuilding them are self their are to many options and knowledge that I don't have to to make this happen. if your trying to save money how we do it. we buy the rebuild kit for the car or truck then have it benched only. 200-400 depending on the transmission. but the kits can rang from 200-650 this might be a option for you.

What a great service you offer to the viewers. I retired from the new car dealership as a service advisor after many years as a line technician. I handled all the transmission repairs for a dual franchise Dodge and Buick dealership. I definitely seen my share of overhauls from rear wheel and front wheel drive cars and trucks. It's a dirty job with a lot of parts cleaning and labor intensive. You have an excellent work ethic and fine presentation of skills.

This is my first GM transmission rebuild. Actually I'm repairing this transmission for my uncle after the last rebuilder left the plug on the B shift solenoid unclipped. Made it 7k miles before burning up the 3/4 clutch pack. Had a serious vibration at about 1,500 miles. We thought it was the rear axle as the truck has 525k miles on it. The rebuilder's health got really bad, so I decided to find the problem and repair it. But it's not terribly different than the Ford's I've been into. I'm at repacking the 3/4 clutch pack after pulling the complete transmission apart and washing out the burnt fluid and clutch disc material. Great video for those of us who dare tackle a transmission rebuild.

I have a 2003 TB LT and a lot of time and $$$ invested keeping it on the road. But I like it and have learned more about doing some of the repairs myself than I ever thought possible thanks to videos like this on KZbin. Well, 268,000 miles on it now and the transmission started clunking and slipping, and soon went out last weekend. I lucked out and found an incredible shop who had it rebuilt and replaced by Thursday. I was wondering what all went into this kind of job and found this. Thanks for an incredible fully detailed step by step process of what they did. So many little steps that make a big difference. I would never attempt, I'd lose track of all the bolts. But seeing what they did, for $2800 which I thought was a bargain, was really interesting. You don't get paid just for what you do, but what you know.

Hello Hiram. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I used your video to do a complete rebuild on my 4L60E and it now works really well. I do have a question though on the TCC I was hoping you could help with: It doesn't engage. I tested the solenoids and can hear it clicking in the gearbox when I switch it manually (I wired it directly to a switch to check it). I had the torque converter cut open seals etc replaced. My question is - do you think there is a chance there could be an airlock in the TCC circuit or something else causing the converter to not work as all the mechanics and electrics seem fine? Thanks so much again for the great videos.
@tarrensmith96578 жыл бұрын
Hello Hiram, thanks for the response. The gearbox is in a Cobra I built and there is an aftermarket controller which is pretty rudimentary and doesn't have trouble codes. There is no change in RPM when I engage the clutch and when I change throttle position RPM changes.

I don't know what you call junk, but compare the mileage your getting out of a electronic, clutch style converter compared to 25-30 years ago and there ain't no comparison. Everything mechanic fails, wears and most important needs to be maintained. Lack of regular maintenance is the most common failure. I rebuilt a 45RFE that had 520,000 miles on the original trans, but the customer always maintained his vehicle like recommended. Now explain to me how a genius like you comes up with a idea of failures???
