Just wanted to say i appreciate the videos you put out especially being a smaller channel. All i have is transmissions from the GM Platform and you’ve helped out a lot.

Great work, love the videos!!! Ive been looking at some bushing drivers for the 4l60e, would the plastic bushing drivers work??? Thanks!!!! They are a bit cheaper?????

Hi Frank, thanks for the kind words! Those plastic/3D printed bushing drivers are fine for once in a blue moon but wouldn't trust them for regular duty use.

Hi Nick, I have been wondering why couldn't you use hex flange bolts to hold the bell housing on ,is it clearance or am I missing something?? Thanks for the video Nick!
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 6 ай бұрын
Hi Doug, my guess is hex bolts of the appropriate height/depth would interfere with the torque converter so a female engagement design was used, and the TP50 bolts would frequently strip so they went to Mortorq in 2007 or 2008.

Great video, Nick. I'd suspect the intermittent "no movement" condition was caused by all that clutch mud clogging the filter. After it sits a while, enough of it falls back into the pan that it will move again for a while, until it clogs up again. I'm like you, though, I always play doctor with each one. Gotta find the actual cause or it bothers me. Also, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of hot tank washer do you use? I'm in the market... I'm still cleaning everything by hand in a small solvent tank, but I've gotten busy enough now I think I can justify the time savings a hot tank would give me. I need a small one, though, as I have limited space.

Thank you, Kevin! I agree about the clogged filter, and that occurred to me a few days after I shot and produced the video, haha. Another commenter mentioned the same thing and think you're both correct. My parts washer tank is an old one and will be replacing it soon - I'll reply back later with the brand/manufacturer.

My hot tank is an old EMC brand washer, they still make them AFAIK...Here's their website: www.equipmentmanufacturing.com/parts-washer-powerjet-home.html My particular model has long since been discontinued but one of the two smaller ones may be of interest...My washer does a good job but it's getting very rusted out so looking to replace vs trying to repair it..I think it's at least 30 years old at this point, runs on 110 volt outlet power.

Cativating disaasembly-enjoyed it. Shouldn't that "68" embossed end-play washer be put on w/68 face down? I remember you saying that in a 700R4 rebuild...I've been putting the stamped numbers down for less bearing wear.
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, KtF! Yep, you're correct - the numbers should be facing the drum not the bearing though I've torn down numerous units with that spacer in wrong and haven't observed any ill effects but the technically correct orientation is number-down.

I have a 65E doing the same thing, thought is the converter clutch material plugged the filter. Trans will work for a short time the first time the engine is started, then as soon as it runs a little while all gears go away as the filter plugs up. Will know for sure once I tear it down.
@nickstransmissions

Thanks, rust-hoader-garage! I believe you're correct in that clutch material was clogging up the filter causing no movement...Yes, please let me know what you find once you tear the trans down.

What would make one of these pull forward in both reverse and neutral, and all forward gears seem to work correctly? I expected to find the forward clutches welded together but they are in good shape. Very little metal in pan. I have the pump and the input drum out, but decided to stop there and do a little research. Can't seem to find anyone who has had this issue. This was not after a rebuild, just happened one day. Thanks for any insight.

Thanks for watching, A B...Sounds like possible cross leaks somewhere, perhaps between the valve body, spacer plate and case but odd that it developed suddenly after the transmission has a history of working normally. One other thing it could be is a collapsed forward thrust bearing, the resulting additional room for the drum to travel is allowing oil to get in behind the piston and allow it to apply...Also check the little bleed orifice in the forward piston housing to see if it's working and venting fluid...If not, that's your problem.

Thanks, Jaz. Not doing any more 4L60E VB tear downs as I have those on the channel already and the only difference between the 09+ valve bodies is the lack of a 3-2 control solenoid and valve/spring. Everything else is the same insofar as the valve trains are concerned.

I was just wondering if maybe the afl valve was a issue but still don't explain why it was random 🤔 I have seen input drums test good when cold but leak after operating temp
@nickstransmissions
@nickstransmissions 6 ай бұрын
Others have suggested a clogged filter insofar as the mysterious 'no movement' condition which makes sense given how the TCC disintegrated so likely jammed up the filter at times. The AFL valve wouldn't cause no movement but would cause 3-4 clutch burn up as well as other drivability symptoms. In the case of this transmission, the TCC regulator valve was really worn out (one of the worst I've seen in recent memory) so that contributed to the TCC failure. I put a Fitzall TCC reg valve in that thing which I did film so you'll see that in the coming days...I also filmed the vacuum testing of that valve body where you see the weakness in the AFL and TCC valve as well as the forward abuse bore plug...Pt 2 shows the fixes and re-test... All those videos will be on the channel by this time next week!

if first gear not working must be the dirt clogged the oiling system

Yep, the consensus is that the TCC clutch material clogged the filter and caused the intermittent no movement condition.
