I recently defended Andy Dalton on a message board. Really good career and for me, is the minimum of what you'd want out of a first round QB. Many fewer coaches would be fired during their first contract if they had Andy Dalton level QB play, which shows how hard it is to find a good one.

The 2011 draft was the first with the new rookie wage scale, which probably led to the amount of early QB's. Locker staying for his senior year cost him an insane amount of money. Bradford got 6/76 and Newton got 4/22.
@JusNoBS420
@JusNoBS420 3 жыл бұрын
That’s an excellent point. Sam Bradford was the last 1st round QB to get a crazy deal. I actually went to the U. of Washington when Locker was there. He helped rebuild that program and was a school favorite for his heart. He played for the love of the game. Not the fame or the money. After several injuries in Tennessee he lost that “love”. He actually owns and runs a farm near the Canadian boarder in WA. I run into him and he seems happy living the country life

It sometimes seems that scouts, staff, and owners continue to make personnel decisions based on certain "factors" that, contrary to their deep-seated beliefs, actually have nothing to do with the game. It was captured so clearly by the contrasting analyses of Gabbert's "genius" vs. Newton's "idiocy." And what happened with Tyrod in Buffalo was a total disgrace.

That 2012 QB class was so freakin' loaded. It was like the 2017 RB class. You had Andrew Luck and OROY Robert Griffin III. You had late-bloomer Ryan Tannehill. You had Brock Osweiler, who was a massive free agency bust late in his career, but before that, in 2015, he did go 5-2, which was key for the Broncos to go on their Super Bowl run. Not to mention Super Bowl Champion Russell Wilson and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. In the late rounds, you also have Kirk Cousins, who's a pro-bowler and a solid starter. Not to mention, at they very tail end of all of that, you have Case Keenum as an undrafted free agent. Not bad. Not bad at all.

I still believe to this day Blaine Gabbert in the right situation (like the vast majority of QBs) would have done really well and could have had a much different career. Cam was a better athlete and I think he exceeded most of our expectations, which were already high. But Gabbert was a talented athlete in his own right. Nowadays, I think he's a top 15 backup. But sometimes I wonder what could have been.

As a Jaguars fan, while Gabbert didn't come into a good situation and was thrown into the fire too quickly- I still have no doubt there's no situation in which he would have become a quality full-time starter. The guy panicked WAY too easily in the pocket and it was glaringly obvious of this even in college; so much so I have no idea what the Jaguars or any team saw in him as a 1st Round pick. Prototypical size I guess? smh.... He's definitely improved but his ceiling's always been a backup who can maybe grab a couple wins here and there

Hold on. Wilson benefitted from favorable circumstances. He had one great season where he torched vs depleted pandemic defenses, a great O-Line, and one of the weaker schedules in college football. Before that season, Wilson was nothing to write home about. If Wilson being drafted by the Jets sounds like success to anyone, you are sadly mistaken. Fields has the opportunity to end up on a better team with better weapons.
