After listening to jazz my whole adult life I think Joe Henderson has become my most favorite tenor player of all. Plus the tunes he wrote still sound so great, like fresh and new sounding, every time I hear them. RIP Joe. I am grateful for all the great music you left behind.

At the young age of 22, a friend and I were walking down 8th St in Manhattan one evening and started up a conversation with a very hip-lookin "cat" carrying an instrument case. We hot it off and he invited us to partake in his lower East Side apt. We did. And he pulled out his tenor sax and started to play for us. We were blown away. It was Joe Hnderson, as it turned out. Young ignoramuses that we were, we had never heard of him and had no idea that he was already a jazz star. Until, that is, we went to our favorite local bar that had a huge juke box full of eclectic music from dance to jazz, and scrolling thru the JB menu, there was his name...Joe Henderson!

It's such a beautiful, classic Jobim song. I first heard it played by Stan Getz (ts) (with Charlie Byrd on guit, Keter Betts on b, Buddy Deppenschmidt on dr), on his Jazz Samba album back in 1962. And then Getz played another version of it on his Getz/Gilberto album in 1963 with the guitar playing and beautiful voice of Joao Gilberto. Check them out.
