One more thumbs up for this procedure. I used a variation to get it to work. My new to me 4th gen V6 was going into 4wd from 2wd just fine, but was not engaging 4lo when requested (it would just beep and 4lo flashed). I loosened each bolt about 3 turns and the actuator really never became "loose" as shown in the OPs vid. I then switched to 4wd, verified engagement, then shifted to neutral and switched to 4lo and shifted to and from reverse and fwd gears dozens of times. 4lo light still flashed after several iterations. I did hear a few clunking sounds, but still no bueno on the 4lo. Then I decided to try a different method. Repeat as above, but once in neutral, I switched the key off and then back on to accessory position, then engaged 4 lo, and it didn't flash. I then started the truck and 4lo light was solid and engaged properly!! I left the bolts loose during the entire procedure and tightened them up with 4lo engaged and transmission in park. Drove around the neighborhood and successfully engaged / disengaged a number of times with no issues. Another thanks to you Jacob, you da man!

With the vehicle off and the key turn on and the vehicle in neutral on a flat surface set the switch to 4Lo. Go under the vehicle and see if the actuator is beeping or making any sounds. If the actuator is working it should make a sound trying to engage or disengage. If it is grinding it is between 4Hi and 4Lo. If there is no sound then there is no power to the actuator. I have another video showing another actuator connected outside the vehicle to verify the wiring works. Try to move forward and backwards after you change to 2Hi. Is the light still showing 4WD? I would have someone listen to see if the 4WD is trying to engage. You will hear the motor try. If you hear it trying then loosen the three bolts and try it again. Only tighten the bolts after it works. If you do not hear the motor trying to move it then you have a voltage issue either a fuse or ground issue.

It can create a fluid leak after this, correct? If so how do i fix the leak?
@jakemir Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is possible to create a fluid leak, but it is an O-ring, which is pretty durable and you do not need to remove the actuator itself. You are just loosening the bolts and rocking it back-and-forth. For some reason, sometimes these actuators bind up and get stuck, and when you rock them, it will unbind.
@andreapiro7098 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob! To clarify, loosen bolts (with car on and in neutral?) leave them loose, switch to the gear you want, rattle the thing, verify its changed /listen for the clunk, tighten back up, verify you can now switch back and forth. Is that right? Car on and in neutral for all of it?
@jakemir Жыл бұрын
Ignition on, but it does not have to be started. Keep the vehicle in neutral with the tires blocked so it does not roll. Switch over to 4wheel low and listen for the sound underneath the vehicle at the actuator. If it is stuck, you’ll hear a beeping after about 15 seconds. then you can loosen the bolts. You can loosen them almost 1/ quarter inch out and then rock it back-and-forth until you hear it engage. I would then switch back into four wheel high and back to load to make sure it is moving back-and-forth and then re-tighten the bolts
@andreapiro7098 Жыл бұрын
@@jakemir I just wanted to say thank you! I have a 2006 v8 and was stuck in 4LO. This is new to me and after the timing belt, water pump, valve covers, a new CV axle I was about to cry at the thought of an actuator. If I tried to go back to 4HI, the 4LO light would blink and trying to put it into any gear would initiate loud beeping. CDL seemed to work okay but sometimes slow. Drove it around the block to see if I could get it freed up, and the dash lit up and threw a P2772. I did indeed have beeping from the actuator itself which I hadn't heard because the beeping in the cabin was so loud. To find the proper bolts, I found it easiest to run my fingers along the housing and feel for the shape as its very tight down there. Do not need to remove any skids, and this is a metric 12 for anyone else finding this. One of them I had to use a box wrench because I couldn't fit the socket wrench in there. I backed them off a bit but was unable to wiggle it. Was going to go check and see if I could cycle it, then heard a loud bang as I was crawling out, and knew I was probably in luck. Checked and it was fixed. tightened everything back and cycled it a bunch of times on and off no problem. This is 100/10. THANK YOU!

That means the motor is bad. There are two internal motors; one for center diff lock and one for 4Lo. If your center diff lock works I would leave everything alone. 4Lo is rarely used, but center diff lock makes the the four wheels work together and the V8 is always in 4Hi anyway.

There are two motors in the actuator. The top or first motor is for the Center diff lock and the top motor or back motor is for the hi low. You probably have a failed motor. If you turn on the ignition without starting the truck put it in neutral and change diff lock it 4Lo you should hear the motor from under and it will beep if it times out

@@roblyons that beeping is when it times out. It will be easier to if you do not start the vehicle, keep it neutral and have the ignition on. I've owned my 2004 since 2018 had 130k on it, now has 170K. two days ago was the first time it ever shifted into 4Lo. I shifted it in and out every few months for years. One trick you can try is being on a slight hill. The truck must be in "N" or the computer freaks out shifting to 4Lo. The slight hill will allow you to let the vehicle roll a tiny amount and will allow the gears in the transfer case to move without causing the computer and light to beep/flash. I probably only shifted in and out of 4Lo less then 500 times in over the years trying to get it to work. You could probably sit in the driveway and shift it a whole bunch over a weekend and work it lose. Now it shifts in and out of 4Lo fine no hill, foot on the brake, pops in once "D" is engaged. many people believe using the 4Lo once month is the best way to keep the actuators working.

I then loosened all 3 bolts and tried to engage it with the bolts loose but it did not do the trick. I was being quite careful because I didn't want to damage anything. Is the binding from a sideways movement or should I try to pull it outwards? I appreciate any tips! thanks for the video.

Make sure you are actually loosening the correct top bolt on the actuator. There are two bolts up there and one of them is holding the actuator and the other one is a cover bolt. The first time I tried this, I put it on the wrong bolt. verify the top bolt is the actual bolt holding the actuator assembly. I just don’t think you have all the bolts loosen because the whole actuator should move 1 to 2 inches up and down or side to side and you’ll immediately feel it bind and free up.

Would this work for a v6 that won’t go into 4high and 4Lo?

I believe the actuator on the V6 is similar to the VA although the VA does not have 2 Wheel Dr. function, only for high and four low. Turn the ignition on without starting the vehicle and then switch it to four-wheel-drive and see if you can hear the motor moving. The actuator should be making some kind of noise. If there is no sound, then it could be a fuse. Otherwise it will be binding. If you hear a beeping sound inside that transfer case actuator, that is a sign that it could be binding and this would work.

When you loosen the bolts are you able to physically move the actuator? It should move about an inch back and fourth. Do not start the vehicle. Try this with the wheels blocked and the vehicle in neutral. If it is beeping it is stuck and in an error code.

@@jakemirI rewatched and you did identify the size socket. Also, I was thinking there might be some corrosion on the linkage. Had you considered taking off and applying some lubricant?

@@leesommer5871 here is a link where I replace the actuator. I also have a encoder or clocking video showing the insides. I found the biggest issue it the motors fail. I installed a used actuator and it took three different ones to find one that both motors worked 2003-2009 4Runner replace transfer case actuator with removing the transfer case kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6KQdKipjLZkjdE

Save the time in unplug the battery for 2 minutes I hade the same issue

I tried disconnecting the battery and also touching the positive and negative terminals after the battery was disconnected to discharge all the computers, and that did not work for me. My actuator was actually bound, and I had to loosen the bolt to unbind it.
