8:04 The instant I saw that ol' FJ40 I paused and marveled at it, then realized it had a cummins badge and a huge smile appeared on my face. You have just added 207 lbs of fuel and the weight of the tank (presumably heavy if it can take the beating of the trail), not to mention the clearance you've lost. I'll be very interested in the results of payoff vs sacrifice down the road and how you feel about it.

211 litres of petrol, that is an insane amount of go juice. 600mi (960km) seems a bit short though, petrol life I suppose, nearly get that in my diesel with factory 120 litres. Great vid mate, always love watching your stuff, and so do the boys.

Great camera work Kevin! Been on the waitlist for a while now eagerly anticipating the end of R&D and testing. Glad to see this has gone well so far. I can't wait to get mine installed! Being mostly a solo overlander, not having to wrestle with jerry cans and siphon hoses and all that will be extremely convenient. Nice not having to come off the trails to hunt for a gas station too.

I have a tank in my bed with a transfer pump that i use now. over all cost is 175 dollars. my range is 620 miles, but yes i do have to stop and open a valve and transfer the fuel. Cool and that's a lot of work. I have the LRA tundra 46 gal, one man install, did it on the driveway. Although mines not an aux tank so no need to plumb it to existing factory tank. I'm seeing some comments on just carrying Jerry cans or in bed transfer tanks...been there done that, I'd rather have a larger tank and range than getting out and 'refueling' with Jerry cans. In bed transfer tanks is also a no go, cant do it with a topper and don't want to be carrying fuel in the bed with cargo. Did a 2500mi roundtrip to Yellowstone with a modded 17 mpg highway 1st gen taco and a 18 gal tank.....never again; carried 2 5gal waverian Jerry cans and stopped at EVERY gas station. Having a larger tank with range woulda made a world of difference. Also an FYI, my tundy 46 gal range is at 650+ on summer blend...80/20 hwy/city. LRA tank worth every penny.

Great camera work and awesome video! Only 2 things that stopped me from looking into this is if you get into an accident, that seems like not too good of a place to have 33 gallons of fuel (think Ford Pinto!) and even more important, they are illegal in California! Noted that they bolted the tank directly to the cross members. You will have to look at the stress it will put on the welds on the tank. I had a sub-tank attached to my 100 Land Cruiser and instead of bolting it directly to the cross members, the tank is hanging in metal hoops that is then bolted to the body. This allows for "movement" of the tank without stress on the welds.

They've been building these tanks for 30 years and beating them to death in Australia. I feel fairly confident in the structural integrity being 12 gauge steel. 👍

We have a Tacoma, used to ride 38" tires on it, had a total fuel capacity of just over 58 gallons without any outside jerry cans. Use it for snow wheeling here. One issue we had was that it was attached to the frame without enough ability to flex with the frame, the attachment points then started to leak. Then we decided to go bigger and made modifications to fit 44" tires on it. Had to body lift it to fit the larger tires and cut into the body a bit. The body lift was just under 2 inches in total. This meant that we could fit a larger tank and also fix the leaking issue. Now we have just under 69 gallons of tank capacity and have fixed the fuel issue. Sometimes we use most of the fuel over a 3 or 4 day trip in the highlands, that is because of some very very deep snow and having to drive with lockers engaged, 2 or 3 psi in the tires and making full use of the extra transfer case for ultra low gearing. Other trips we return having only spent 40% of the total fuel brought with us because the snow is hard packed and a much easier trip over glaciers and in the highlands. Happy trails.

Nice! I have a mint 1988 4Runner. 4x4 exploring has been my hobby for the last 17 years. I can't do that mod unless I put on a huge rear bumper with spare tire like you have. Where you are putting that tank is where I have my factory stock spare tire. For 1st Gen 4Runner owners there is a gas tank mod that fits above your spare tire. But it does lower your ground clearance a little. I do have room to extend my stock gas tank forward a little longer. A cut and weld.

Too much ground clearance loss! At the last bend toward the bottom, I would eliminate that portion which looks like it would gain (3 inches?) and still give you an extra (20 or so gallons?) which would still be a huge improvement over the stock capacity. Also, 33 gallons of extra fuel weighs about 200 pounds whereas 20 gallons would only weigh 120 pounds, that's a big difference when that weight is behind the rear axle. Since the original gas tank holds around 23 gallons an extra 20 gallons would increase capacity to 43 gallons. At 15 mpg the range would be 645 miles and at 19 mpg the range would be 817 miles. That's plenty of range.

where can i get a similar head unit like that? (reporting time, temp, direction, and gas range) - i saw a forum last year that linked to someone making them, but it was removed. i'd love to instal one myself!

I need to find a way to put 15-20 gallons more in my Danger Ranger, and still have room for air tank....18 gallons and a supercharger is no bueno. Sure, cans work, but... That's a damn nice setup, big though....good and bad.

I hope you dont have to cross the border that often. We had an extra gas tank in an f150 and they would often take us to a secondary.

I have a 4runner and a rav4 and I'm really interested in having a larger gas tank...any ideas on how much would that cost for each vehicle?
@FrancoCastro

I remember having an extra 150 liters tank in a f150. Gas stations would only go up to 120usd. I would need to fill one then close and again. Often I would need to use different credit cards because at least Amex would 'detect' fraud.
