Hey guys! In this video, I'll be upgrading a front suspension on my 2003 Toyota 4Runner. Originally my 4Runner came with an X-reas suspension system and it was time for the upgrade. I took barely used Bilstein front coils & struts from the 2021 Toyota Tacoma and it's a direct replacement of my old struts and coils. Doing this helped me to level out my front end and my 4Runner is sitting level now. I've also too barely used Tokico rear struts of off 2015 Toyota 4Runner and it was basically a direct fit too. My ride quality has improved a lot.
I've purchased all these used parts from OfferUp for around $300.
You can also buy similar used parts from eBay.
You can use front struts & coils from 2015 - 2021 Toyota Tacoma and it will be a direct fit.
Older years struts & coils will also fit but they are going to be more used up so try to look for newer years.
Front struts & coils:
ebay.us/tTFMtM
Front struts & coils (option 2):
ebay.us/bMkzdZ
I hope you find this video helpful.

Excellent job. I got the same wheels new for $400. $150 to mount on existing tires. Bought Bilstein 5100 for $475 for for front and rear and Moog coils for front and rear for $200. I felt like I saved money. You really did well. My 2005 has 180k miles so I figured new coils were in order.

@@tronixster I finally finished my install. Did it all myself like you but my 4runner is a 2005 that is a Midwest car so almost every bolt had to be heated to remove due to rust. My 5 lb sledgehammer got a workout. My truck looks fantastic now. So far I have replaced the front seat cover, the wheels to the same ones you have, hood struts are next then a free floating Apple CarPlay screen is going to be installed in the next two weeks. It’s like a new car and anyone considering a front end lift or level I highly recommend it. They look so much nicer.

Nice video, thanks for posting. It’s worthwhile noting that you can also use the rear shocks from a Tacoma. In this case you need to buy new eyelet bushings for the lower shock mount, press out the original bushings for and replace them with 4Runner size bushings/eyelets. This avoids having to modify the frame of the 4Runner in any way.

Hey Jeff D, any idea if the eyelet bushings off a 2020 4Runner TRD would fit an 05 4Runner? I'm hoping so, just grabbed my set off Craigslist this morning and I'll go for the install this weekend. Phenomenal video, Paul! My alignment guy quoted me over $400 for new shocks and another $400 for labor. Snagged a full OEM set from a 2020 4Runner TRD, used for 11k miles for $180. Can't beat that value!

Ok another comment that is more of an advice thing sense I’m an ASE certified steering and suspension expert that specialized in 4wd vehicles! When replacing any suspension work where you’re replacing like lower control arms or shocks and the control arms, what you are going to need to do is put the tires back on the vehicle let the jack down and rest the vehicle under full body weight on the suspension reverse and pull forward a couple times for the suspension to settle then torque the bolts after the suspension has settled! This is because these parts like the control arms and bottom basically the parts that either turn or have an up and down movement the reason for allowing the suspension to settle is these rubber bushings are basically glued into place and if you don’t let the suspension to settle before torquing them down these rubber bushing will absolutely break away from their glued in areas and will make noise and wear out a lot faster and in my state were we have state safety inspections these broken bushings will cause the vehicle to fail the state inspection for broken suspension parts! And for good sakes people sport utility vehicles and trucks aren’t cars so stop referring them as cars! It’s freaking annoying to hear someone call a truck or an SUV a car!
@tronixster
@tronixster Жыл бұрын
Hey Robert, thanks for sharing this actually. I'm not showing it on the video but I actually did lower the car to the ground before tightening all the suspension components that have bushings. Thanks again for bringing this up.

I think the springs are a bit different, something about the 4runners being progressive and the Tacoma not having that style. Not sure exactly what that means but I believe it has to do with suspension softness/compliance, but they do work! For those getting rear shocks, you will need to change out the bottom bushing on the Tacoma shocks to fit 4runners
@tronixster
@tronixster 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah those old progressive springs are no good honestly, especially in the from where you have lots of weight. And Tacoma rear shocks won't fit on 4Runner. They are different
@EcBuddy123

@@tronixster the shocks do fit. Just the Bottom bushing needs to be changed according to a ton of forums... Of course you get no springs since the Tacoma runs leaf springs if that's what you mean.

anyone ever compare the ft lbs that different nuts and bolts release at (after they have been confirmed torqued to manufacturer specs when last serviced) Just be interesting to compare their release torque ft lbs compared to the spec torque ft lb after 20,000-30,000 mi of use.

Suspension is not connected to traction control system or ABS system in anyway, unless you accidentally damaged a wire for ABS system. That's the first thing I would check

Can you explain not needing the hydronic line again? If they havnt changed suspension components, do the newer shocks just not require a hydronic line?
@tronixster
@tronixster Жыл бұрын
Newer shocks have everything built in to them. Those lines are just additional stuff that cross connects front & rear shocks to limit the body roll. It’s a great idea in theory but it gets warm out quick and maintenance is pain in the butt and super expensive and quality of the ride is not any better

Rear shocks didn't raise the back end, it stayed and stock height. To raise the back end you'll need different coils for that.

QUESTION: did you or anyone who did this end up using a spacer to correct for any side lean? Since the front has more weight?

There shouldn't been any side lean. Also coils from Tacoma are a little taller and will naturally level it out.

Quick question, So I have a 2004 4Runner with Xres ( 2WD ) can I still do it? Next is I’m finding the Toyota 4Runner back shocks with the # 19 on them not #22 like yours is that the height of the shock?

Yes you can do same conversion on your 2WD and I don't think those numbers matter, those shocks should be the same length. Correct if I'm wrong or if you find different information.

Hello, did it come off TRD 4Runner? Technically it should level it out. Tho springs & struts from Tacomas tend to sit a little higher than springs & struts from 4Runner but it should still level it out nicely, you might have to use 1" spacers in the front.
