This is my 2014 Honda CR-V, 4th generation. I did a transmission fluid and filter change. The filter is hard to get to. I do have arthritis in my hands so it makes it harder to do the job at times.

Great video, the only one I've seen showing changing the filter. Very clear and specific instructions. Just did it myself last night, took 2 hours to change that little thing. The only thing I did different was loosen the air filter bracket entirely so I had more room. The main challenge was getting the hoses to come free of the filter, that and just the extremely tight space to work in!

Excellent video and communication. Just finished this job on a 2012 CRV using Beck Arn Filter. An autopsy of the old filter 110 km., showed a lot of black but 'not clogged'. The trans has the famous occasional shudder that stops after a fast 2 lt. flush with the DW-1 ATF., every year. These transmissions should 'not' require that type of service and Honda should be ashamed. Many thanks for your help. The job would have been much more painful without it. Again......thank you.

👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🙏🏻 Great video! I didn't realize there was a filter so I need to get one and change mine! I changed my fluid at 60,000 miles doing two changes of the 2.7qts trans fluid.......drained filled, ran the cars several miles then drained a second time and refilled👍 The reason is they say you only are draining a portion of the fluid when you drain the 2.7 qts.....may be overkill but that's what I did and the fluid is relatively cheap.

NOTE: Some have asked about part number: 25420-RXH-003 I called several Honda dealers and it is a metal "strainer" with no paper element. It is inside the transmission and you would need to split the case to get to it. Was told it isn't a replacement item needing maintenance.

I have the 07 CRV. I think she has 149,000 miles on her and sounds like a jewel. I’ve never had any problems with it but I keep up on maintenance and that’s the ticket! I know I had heard mechanic Scotty Kilmer on here say that you don’t change the transmission filter and I had heard it one time he said don’t even change the transmission fluid. Interesting.. I love Honda’s and Toyota’s. I’m reading up on the Honda truck 🛻 now. Need a V6 for pulling my 13’ camp trailer. I did take a long haul when I got with the car with the trailer as I bought it from another state with my CRV and it actually did great. They’re not that heavy of a trailer and I don’t pack it down and leave water in the tanks and other heavy things. Love my Crv!

Scotty does want you to change the filter but the strainer is not necessary. Just check it for metal parts if you remove the fluid pan and if it has a strainer😊. He does not want you to flush the fluid if high mileage. I changed mine without removing pan with same amount I removed at cold temp at 215,000 miles and no slipping. Many cars WILL start slipping and you should drain and put old fluid back in so save it. I believe that filter protected the tranny. REPLACE THAT FILTER! The lower the mileage you replace the fluid, the safer it is. Change every 30k to 50k mikes.

Interesting, I asked ChatGPT what the benefit of warming the transmission fluid before draining it is When the transmission fluid is warm, contaminants like metal particles, sludge, and other debris are suspended more effectively in the fluid. This suspension helps in flushing out these contaminants more completely during the draining process, leading to a cleaner transmission. Since heated fluid flows better, you are more likely to remove a higher percentage of the old transmission fluid. Cold, thicker fluid tends to cling to the transmission components, leading to an incomplete drain.

I took the left wheel off to access the bottom of the transmission filter. I used a 1/4" drive, flex head ratchet and a short 10 mm socket to take the flter retainer off. I was able to get on it from inside the wheel well with a 1/4" battery ratchet to reinstall the little bolt. I finished tightening the little bolt with the flexhead ratchet from above. I checked the fluid before starting and it was right on the money full. I had the front of the car jacked up 20". I don't know if that made a difference, but I removed 3 liters of fluid.

Great job on the video. Just curious, why did you wait until 90k to change your transmission fluid??? I've been changing my transmission fluid at every 30K at minimum... I haven't done straight 3 drain/refills consecutively, so just been changing it out every other oil change more recently. My fluids comes out mostly red still. If you see hints of brown discoloration, the fluid is breaking down. Honda transmissions are not the greatest, so I rather be safe...

When I was doing this, The part I failed at was removing that 10mm bracket that is on the transmission filter. I tried to loosen up the side, like how you suggested, but I still wasn’t successful. I also used PB blaster to loosen that up as well, but what ended up happening is that my 10mm socket and my 10mm regular combination wrench ended up just falling to the bottom of my car. Even my backup one kept on falling down. Do you have any suggestions for this part? This is the hardest part.

Thanks for the video. I wonder what is the role of that small filter. It is so small in comparison to the volume of fluid going around. After watching your video I called the dealer's maintenance shop and they told me they never change it when doing a fluid change. I wonder why.
@starastronomer
@starastronomer 4 жыл бұрын
stephan h...Glad the video helped. Yes, as I said in the video at approx. 5:45 my dealer's service guy said the same thing. So why put it in? I would still change it. As to size I agree it is very small. BUT, my understanding is many cars don't even have trans filters anymore. Wonder how much pressure goes through it? One would think the dealers could make some extra money charging you for the extra cost of time and material for the filter change. Maybe it's because it is hard to get to OR they want you to buy a new car when the tranny goes out........just thinking out loud :)
@stephanh1848
@stephanh1848 4 жыл бұрын
@@starastronomer There is apparently another filter inside the transmission. You'd need to open the tranny up to get to it. Honda seems to mostly rely on that one to do the work. I asked about getting the small filter and they (the dealer) quoted me $53...!! and it has to be ordered in... Now, there is always amazon with aftermarket filters...🤔

I called the dealer again after your second comment and the service guy said there was NO filter at all, none. Then I mentioned to the service guy the small one and he said again NO filter is on my CR-V; WHAT? I hung up and asked for parts. The parts guy told me NO internal filter just that small exterior filter I changed in this video. He said he would have to order it [as I did with the one I changed here] because he said the dealer NEVER changes it. WTF are we to believe? Why does Honda put a filter on the car if it was not meant to be changed at some point? I will do more research.
@dizzywillow451

The business model for dealerships is not to benefit the customer but the stakeholders of the business. In my experience there are sadly a fair amount of individuals that work in these parts departments that do not know much about cars or the parts they are selling let alone have the interest of looking them up for you. They spend most of their time working on inventory for the dealership and their commerical accounts.

Now, I have gotten 37 MPG highway on my CR-V and even winter [cold] driving can get upwards of 28 MPG city. Been real happy with my fuel economy. @@starastronomer just picked up a filter for my 2012 civic with 274000 kms that has a transmission shutter. Was hoping thst with a new filter and a few drain and fills will help with that.

With 170,255 miles on your vehicle have you changed the fluid before? I had no prior issues so changing the filter should not have made any difference. Your case may be different though. Can't hurt to change the oil and filter.

@@starastronomer thanks. Just got the car. Figured changing the filter won't hurt anything. Thanks for your input.

Why did you wait until you had 91,000 miles? Manufacture service intervals are much less. It isn't worth the risk to the transmission .

Lynn Appleford While I agree I've had no issues. I change every year now no matter the miles and use the manufacturers recommended oil. However, I drive very conservatively 90% of the time. Most everyone I see drive like fools. Jackrabbit starts in my opinion putting undue wear on the trans and engine. They act like they are in the Indy 500.

2012 through 2016 I believe? Definitely check with your dealer. Also some years "may" be different? In 2015 Honda put the CVT (continuously variable transmission) in CR-V's.
