It’s to do with using the best fingering so you don’t run out of fingers as you go up the keyboard. There are many different starting hand positions.

I, too never caught on that "Twinkle Twinkle" and the "Alphabet Song" were the same melody until late in my life and it was pointed out to me. Just like "My Sweet Lord" and "He's so Fine" and "Surfin' USA" and "Sweet Little 16". I can't see the forest because the trees are in the way! (lol)
