4WD Mini Rock Bouncer Build Suzuki SV 650 Part 4

Today I'm starting a new build a 4WD mini rock bouncer using a Suzuki sv650 for the powerplant. This Suzuki sv650 v twin makes about 75hp and should be perfect for this mini rock bouncer! In the first part I'm fabricating hub adapters for the wheels and looking at the general layout. I'm also starting on the front suspension layout and spindles and ball joints. As a rock CRAWLER you don’t need all 14” of shock travel to be in compression. Many rock crawlers allow for more suspension droop than compression.

My RC Rock crawler has 65/35/65% It can also climb up and over my daughters Barbie Clubhouse like it's not even there. It has also put me on the couch before when I tried to crawl over my wife curves and mountains when she was sleeping.

I split the compression and droop of the suspension of my Jeep ZJ right in the middle. My shocks have 9in of travel and ride height is right at 4.5in. And it does great in the rocks.

The primary pulley has a 1 way bearing, it wouldn't matter how tight the belt is. The belt only moves the secondary once the primary starts closing. The belt grips on the sides, not the bottom.

@@Beardest_Fishing if the belt is tight enough the side of the belt will grab the sides of the drive pulley ive seen RZRs take off as soon as there pit in gear cause the belts smaller ..... idiots i know tryed putting an 800 belt on a 1000

@@dustinmiller7278 If it can be done, some idiot somewhere has tried it. If you get the wrong width belt it will be near impossible to shift in to gear with the machine running, another sign the 1 way bearing has gone bad also.

@@Beardest_Fishing in all honesty I think that's exactly what happened if I'm not mistaken the 800cc razors belt is 1/8 of inch wider than the 1,000 but don't hold me to that because I'm not exactly sure I just buy the part that the part number calls for install it and have never had any real issues

Hey man , keep a bottle of yellow mustard on hand . If you burn yourself spread mustard on . Keep it on for 20-25 minutes and wash it off . It won't blister .

If you mount your jackshaft on curved, slotted holes, you could move the jackshaft in an orbit around the secondary pulley, and still tension the chain going to the engine

I like this idea. However, the jackshaft is supported by two bearing carriers with three bolts each. Unless you mounted the carriers to an adjustable set of plates. Meaning a plate mounted to the frame with slotted holes, and a plate that mounts the carriers. As you stated, make the slots so you are at a constant distance from the driver pulley, but would be able to adjust the distance from the driver sprocket on the engine. The mounting plates would have to be robust to take the torque from the engine and drive the CVT without deflecting under heavy loads.

Chris... we've never seen a 'belt' powered crawler for a reason.... it will slip as soon as it gets hot, and it will get hot as soon as you start crawling. I would not judge you in the slightest if you switched to 'chain' drive to eliminate the slippage, wear and issues you will encounter attempting to tune that 'belt' driveline. AND... you will have the room to actually 'fit' into the thing. If not, I'm sure you will impress us with that unique 'out of the box' thinking you do so well. Always impressed here bud. Hey Chris, love the builds brother! But before you go any further, test run that combination. The lower gears, if most in the tranny aren't going to give you enough rpms to get full range out of the primary. Please check it out before going too far...Love your enthusiasm and your channel!

Try 10.5 inches, center of primary shaft to the center of the secondary shaft, for your belt tension. That's what the clutch alignment tool measures.

Looking good, call it whatever you want want, it's your project. I think you should make the engine pivot on mounts that you have already made to tension the chain. Also I don't think you should have compromised the four link bars (by bending them) to gain a lower center of gravity. You'll figure it out, you always do. Need to look for a transmission alignment tool to set the belt tension and get proper alignment of the primary/secondary pulleys. Lots of people sell them and they help to keep everything lined up right so you dont trash belts! Have to use them when the transmissions are removed from rzrs to get everything set back up correctly.

I think it may be time to consider moving your shop. I think you'll need a considerably larger sprocket on your engines output, in order for the CVT to function, across every gear.

I don't see how the CVT will function as intended. If the CVT engages at 2k RPMs, the transmission output will need to reach that before it engages (assuming a 1:1 ration between the two). Based on the wiki page for the SV650, the primary gear reduction is 2.088:1, and the 1st gear reduction is 2.461:1. For the bike transmission output to reach 2k RPMs, the engine will be at over 10.25k RPMs.

Need hydraulic steering on it to make it easier to steer rock crawling. You also need to check the articulation make sure it doesn’t hit the motor or anything else and make sure your slip yoke’s in the axles have a Enough slip.

Go for the side profile of a Dodge Viper. That’s the best way I know to describe it. A lot of bouncers have that profile. Long sleek hood section. With a cage just big enough for the driver.

The gears below 1:1 gear ratio will be useless. The cvt normally runs right on the crank giving a 1:1 ration. But my guess the higher gears above 1:1 ratio might give it a higher top speed.

You should invite all the go cart channels to come over and really piss the neighbor off. When he trespasses to complain, jump him and fix the problem. After you are done, call the cops on him for trespass. Then, get a restraining order on him and he will be forced to find a new place to live. That fixes the problem nicely.

Ahhh man! I've done the same thing to my finger before. Still have the scar. Went in all the way to the bone and coderized it on the way through my flesh. One of the worst pains I've ever felt. I'm a man in my mid 30s and I'm not ashamed to say that it made me cry. I feel your pain.

Slapped a grinder through a glove took about an inch worth of skin nearly all the way. Left a biggie. In time it kinda blends in, and it's a PITA of a burn pain. But what's worse is when it heals, but the new skin is raw, so if you wash your hands with hot water, it hurts, if it's cold water... it hurts, if you mildly scrape your wound, it hurts, and it itches all the damned time. :))

@@aserta oh man. I got myself with a cutting wheel one time. Right on top of my hand. It was my fault. I was just trying to save some time and cut something out of position. Well it resulted in a wound that bled more than any other wound I've ever had and then got nine stitches.

I'm guessing about eight months ago, I stuffed an exacto knife though my right hand and I thought I was going bleed to death. I ran to the bathroom and got it cleaned up and bandaged, and went back out into the front room and held my hand obove my head. but within a few minutes the bandage was sopped with blood, and I had to run back to the bathroom and clean and bandage it again, so I went back out the front room and held my hand above my head again. and I'll be God dammed if the bandage was sopped with blood again. well after about four times of doing this stupid bullshit, I came to decision to go to the emergency room. and as I was getting ready to go it got to where the heavy bleeding stopped. after getting it cleaned and bandaged for the last time at least so often. I finally had chance to take stock of what had happened the last couple hours. and my place looked like something right out of a horror movie or that of a murder scene. what a fucking mess? it took quite a while to clean that mess up. I have been injured plenty of times before but never experienced such heavy bleeding, I'm not sure what was different about this particular time. anyway it took quite a while for it to heal up but it finally did, and I think I must have severed a nerve in my hand. because now my little finger is a little wonky, that sucks but that's the way it goes no doubt.

Cauterized* Thats exactly why the office jockeys dont wander out to where real work is being done. Lots of paper pushers are starting to meander into the field of fabrication, seems as though injuries are the result. Seen a few city kids come out to the farm and by days end (if that) they are crying about some easily avoidable accident or boo boo. Perhaps some are better off holding down office chairs and playing on the computer while they should be working. BTW if you "slapped a grinder through a glove" then you have business anywhere near mechanized rotating objects. Any workman worth his salt will tell you to NEVER wear gloves in any instance where they can be grabbed and pulled into anything spinning.

Option for more room inside, stack the CVT shaft directly on top of the gearbox and move the gearbox forward, the chain will still work at that angle. Would leave a nice hole for your feet to fit.

Thank you Chris for clarifying the CVT issue... Maybe most of us should watch all the way through before throwing in our laughably "two cents" without realizing your experimentation. If you decide to ditch the CVT, take a look at Rekluse and Hinson clutches. You might be quite curious as to what they are offering. Would be exceptional addition to the Grave Ninja. I think you should just call it a rock bouncer like you have been and use it as whatever you end up using it as! It looks INCREDIBLE!! I would really love to see the rear axle possibly have steering haha. I know why you haven't done it yet and it's a pretty low priority with everything else on the build that needs to be done. But maybe once you finish everything else! Then I feel like it would be more "Rock bouncer" I guess. I am not an aficionado but to me, rock bouncers had rear steering, far forward front axles, and dope-looking frames! As far as I'm concerned you are two for three! lol.
